Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Stunning visual, great music and acting
3 February 2017
This movie takes a huge risk, with over-the-top melodrama, dancing and extravagant sets, but it works because the acting is strong and the music is great. There is a scene where they incorporate the song "Roxanne" as a tango with a huge ballroom full of dancers, while cutting back to a private scene where a courtesan is deciding whether to sell herself, and it's visually stunning with the song used to great effect. This was unlike any movie I've ever seen, in some senses a classic musical but unlike others because it mixes so many styles of music. The actors and the director should all be commended for putting themselves out there and making this work, at least for me.

Lots of laughs
4 February 2016
This is a police parody in the genre of Naked Gun, and it's one of my favorite genres. If you liked Airplane this should be right up your alley. Sure, some of the jokes are silly but that's kind of the point-- just get in the mood! Lots of puns. It's rare that you find a show that's this packed with jokes, sight gags, and hilarious characters. All of the leads are fantastic -- I love Rashida Jones, and there are some great appearances by Alfred Molina -- he steals every scene he is in. On a laugh-per-minute basis, it's hard to beat this show. And there are lots of great cameos by stars -- James Franco, Lisa Kudrow, Adam Scott, and many more. I'm hoping it comes back for many more seasons.

Fantastic satire!

I saw this at a film festival and hope it gets wide distribution because it's a hilarious satire of politics. Many laugh-out-loud moments! It's set in Canada, but anyone in the US or elsewhere can identify with the characters, and the chemistry between the two leads is fantastic. The actor who plays the Canadian MP was in another great movie, Starbuck. The actor who plays the intern reminds me of a young Eddie Murphy -- great charisma, timing, and physical comedy. There is also a subplot with his family back home which shows the contrast between cultures and provides lots of laughs. All the supporting players are wonderful. Highly recommended!
