Altitude Falling (2010)
Worst Ever!
The premise is interesting but don't be fooled. There is nothing to like about this movie. The 'soundtrack' is awful... the script and dialogue is bad and the acting is probably the worst I've ever seen on film.
Some movies are so bad they're funny. Not this one. It's just bad, bad, bad.
The direction is awful too. A director should be able to make actors look good.... here they just look even more foolish. Not only are the actors not likable in their roles, they sound like third graders reading it for the first time.
The story goes from interesting concept to poor execution and ends with a journey to nowhere.
True Love (2004)
Inconsistent
I found this to be a rather disappointing, inconsistent combination of seven shorts. In fact, it might have been better titled, Inconsistencies of Love or Misconceptions of Love as opposed to True Love.
The only example of 'true love' is the short, Sunday which is actually out of place in this collection which is supposedly about growing up and coming out. (It features an older couple.)
I found History a little offense and irresponsible storytelling suggesting a negative stereotype of the young gay experience, or is it? The saving grace of this collection is A Little Drama. Simple, sweet and memorable.
Overall, the acting is pretty poor. Or, the actors were directed poorly. In either case, the acting leaves a lot to be desired.
I guess you could say the writer (Saul) gives seven examples of gay life that contain some truth in each-- but not true love.
The Second Coming (1995)
Powerful Message Still Relevant Today
I think this film is misunderstood because it is being categorized and reaching the wrong audiences. At 55 minutes long, it is part art film, part cautionary tale, perhaps part propaganda. The cover art is misleading. Though it is an image from the film, the film is not a gay love story. It's not even targeted at the typical audience for gay films. The film's lead character, Carlos is gay. There are some erotic images in the film but one of those involves a M/M rape near the end. This film represents the disenfranchised. Even though it was produced 20 years ago, it's message is as important today as it was when it was made. The film's focus surrounds anti-gay and anti-semite activities.
At one point Carlos is cornered and asked what it is he hopes to gain from his 'subversive' activities and his response is, "I just want to live my life." This film isn't against religion but it does explore what happens when any one group with specific beliefs has too much power.
This film is for those that have been attacked, alienated, or witnessed the brutality that occurs when power and fear are allowed to supersede equality and freedom.
If you watch it, you need to watch it to the end to get it. It probably won't 'hook' you in the first 10-15 minutes.
Issues 101 (2002)
One of the Worst
The basic plot isn't bad, it's also not original. The dialogue is bad, the acting is pretty terrible and the production values are practically nonexistent. Lots of script errors and unexplained circumstances.
I'm sure the actors are all really nice people, maybe even talented but they are miscast and their line delivery is pretty bad. There is absolutely no chemistry on screen between the actors. Why is Joe so much older than the other actors that are supposed to be his age or older? It's funny that one moment Joe is arriving at college for the first time and decides to pledge a frat... and before you know it he's running for student body president.
I also found the brother situation a little uncomfortable. I know my brother never hugged me like that-- thank God! It started creepy and then just became more embarrassingly unbelievable. Did Christian really think he wasn't setting up Joe with his gay brother? This film is camp but not in a good way. I never understand when a film casts 'straight frat boys' that come across as gay. This makes their comments about their feelings on gay sexuality a little offensive.
The acting might not seem so bad if they had received some actual direction. Instead, it all comes off as awkward and uncomfortable.
From the beginning this goes from bad to worse. Don't waste your time on this one.
Saturday Night at the Baths (1975)
Important Gay Film
This film is of historic importance in gay culture. First, it was filmed at the Continental Baths. Second, it was one of the first films exploring this aspect of gay life in the 1970's. This film depicts much of what I was familiar with as the struggle of coming out gay back before it was acceptable. It's important for younger gay men to understand what it was like in the days before broader acceptance existed.
Yes, many of the production values aren't the best but for what this film represents that can be overlooked. The acting isn't the greatest but they feel like sincere honest performances.
Once I got into it, I was captivated. I should note there is male and female nudity for those that might be offended.
The performance of "Pretty Girl" by Jane Olivor is outstanding.
Beginners (2010)
It will change you.
I'm shocked this brilliant film hasn't gotten more attention. It explores life, the past, who we are today; and how it figures into our future. It is at times beautifully poetic, sometimes melancholy and others joyous. Everything about it is superb: the writing, direction and acting; all blissfully married together in one heartfelt journey. The dialogue is real, honest and sometimes brutal. I can't imagine anyone viewing this without being completely consumed and deeply moved.
Beginners is a film best viewed alone. It will stay with you, perhaps haunt you and most definitely cause you to reflect on your own unique and unpredictable life.
The Interview (2014)
Worst Ever
If there is any doubt that Sony created the 'hacking scandal' itself to drum up publicity for this very, very unfunny movie... Then watch it.
I can watch pretty much anything. wasn't expecting much to begin with but I was still disappointed.
Not funny, not offensive- politically; plenty of bathroom 'humor' that might offend some. Just a waste of film, talent (actors)-- and my time watching it.
Anyone trying to 'prevent this from being released' was only trying to protect the masses.
One of the worst movies-- but one of the most clever marketing scams ever. Luckily, we aren't at war because of this stupidity. Whomever was responsible should be held accountable. Notice how the press dropped the lead after it was discovered that a Sony official had a link to th supposed 'hackers'.
