What a mess
23 January 2019
This film is all over the place. The first 20 minutes or so set up what could be a really interesting film, but once you get to the psychiatric hospital it just goes downhill fast. The plot is a mess, which is disappointing because the cinematography and lighting and costumes are good for the most part. The story is just utterly incomprehensible and has so many twists it just becomes confusing and overly long. The last 30 minutes feel like a different movie.

Bland, boring and weird
29 October 2018
I was excited for this show and I will say that the production value is very good, the cinematography is usually pretty good and the acting for the most part is all right. But I really had a hard time getting through the first episode. The characters give all the exposition through dialogue and it just comes across as very boring when the audience is simply being told what is happening. If the show used its visuals more (which it really doesn't, all the cool or spooky looking places are just backgrounds that the characters talk in front of) then I would give a 6/10.

The characters aren't all that compelling, they try to be emotional but the writing is usually just too clunky that it sounds like they're just reading off the script. I don't really blame all the actors since it can be hard to make bad writing sound good. I do find it a little weird that the actress who plays Sabrina looks a lot younger than the actor who plays Harvey, to me she looks like she is maybe a freshman in high school and he looks like he could be in his 20s.

There is also a strange blur effect that is put over some shots, but this effect isn't used with any focus or purpose. In one scene the effect is used on some shots but not on others. I thought it was being used when there was some dark force or magic but it's not; it's just used at random with no real reason, and it does not look very good anyway.

This show could have been very interesting but it makes no use of its setting (which is way more cool-looking and cinematic than the settings of the sitcom) and the dialogue gives away all the exposition, no plot information is shown to us we just get told what happens in the show. It's very boring and the writing has no subtlety at all.

Fresh, fun horror movie
21 October 2018
I saw this film at the Philadelphia Film Festival and I had a good time watching it. It's a very intense movie with a lot of action throughout; it never has a moment where it calms down. I like that aspect of it but I can definitely see it being sensory overload for a lot of people. It's also quite graphic, and sometimes it's a little gratuitous and overly gory. I think the film relies a little too much on jump scares but the atmosphere is pretty creepy anyway. I think towards the end the film gets pretty over-the-top and silly, but I think it's an interesting setting and it's very well-shot and the VFX are pretty good.
