Omiros (2005)
Uninspired
I recently saw this film at a festival of Greek culture in London and unfortunately it had quite the opposite effect that the event intended, presenting modern Greece as a divided wasteland in a way that Giannaris seems to enjoy.
As you can tell I'm not a fan of this man's work. Although most of his films demonstrate competence they never rise above their petty desire to appeal to the international market that Giannaris so obviously craves. To make matters worse he has insisted on casting his 'From the Edge of the City' boy-toy Stathis Papadopoulos in his recent films. The boy cannot act, and has about as much menace as a slightly cheesed-off male model. I think cinema has had enough of 'non-professional' casts being used as a means of supposedly adding 'realism' to a film. Drama schools exist for a reason.
Ultimately, this film is a great disappointment. Especially considering the potential of the storyline.

Total Rubbish!
I'm so sick of films like this giving our continent a bad name! For all the repulsed Americans out there I can only say don't judge all Europeans based on this rubbish. It doesn't represent anyone whatsoever.
An utterly worthless film. There are no redeeming features at all. I've always disliked French films (food, literature etc) but I thought I might give this one a try just in case it was good. It wasn't. I've tried to think of something positive to say but there really is nothing positive about this voyeuristic pretentious and sickening film.
Avoid it like the plague.

The Story behind the film.
Let me tell you a story.
One day on the streets of Athens a film director bumped into a male prostitute and decided that the world just HAD to know his story because...you know... he's deprived...and he takes his shirt off a lot and...so on.
This film is the result of his revelation. Repulsive, depraved, homophobic, misogynist...but of course filled with pretty guys with their chests showing. If this is your idea of a good film then enjoy, if not avoid it like the plague.
It's put me off ever going to Greece that's for sure.
