Dimension 404 (2017)
An electronics version of The Twilight Zone
This is quite a bit like an electronics version of The Twilight Zone. I liked much of the first season.
Swamp Thing (2019)
Was better than most DC series as of late!
I liked the series. The characters had depth and there was a lot of story and stuff going on. There's occasional cursing, but not over the top. There are same-sex kisses and romance which lend nothing to the narrative, so it's just thrown in.
This was canceled early in season 1 though the full season aired. The DC streaming system really doesn't know who it is or have a plan, so it throws out stuff with no regard for outcome. I've only heard of two shows being renewed.
Cloak & Dagger (2018)
Fantastic series!
Fantastic series! Sure, it's a bit teen geared, but it's one of my favorite recent superhero shows. Unfortunately S2E1 was more teen angsty and not as good. It got better as the season went on. Sometimes the characters seem bipolar. One minute they're all for something, then they have to be talked into it... The ending was good. It had a solid ending that wrapped up most of the stories and plot points.
The show was canceled after season two due to Disney taking most Marvel content off all platforms to make their own Disney + work.
Pennyworth (2019)
Started strong, but then killed it
The first episode was quite good. It's like an old police drama since there's no superheroes or sci-fi elements.
There has been quite a few F words which lent nothing to the story, drug use, weird drag queen singers completely unrelated to the story, but it's supposed to take place in like the 50s? Did anyone even research the 50s? Many of the exposition scenes with the guys take place in a strip club.
Episode 4 got better. Episode 6 is complete non-sense. I'm out.
See (2019)
Weird ideas set in a universe of madness
The "universe" this show takes place in is an insane idea. Why would they use bow and arrows and most of their weapons if they were blind? Why would they do MOST of the stuff they do if they were blind? If the universe requires belief that the people have all gone blind, then what they do and how they interact must enforce that universe, but instead this one bucks the whole plot idea at most every turn.
The show had some good points. But then this queen is praying some evil version of the Lord's Prayer , which was pure Satanic. It only went downhill from there. I'm out after a few episodes.
Hearts Beat Loud (2018)
Great idea, great cast, poor execution
The cast of this film was great! Nick and Kiersey were perfect in their roles. The primary plot with the dad and daughter is solid. From there it gets muddy.
Why is this girl, who is heading off to college, so angry? They didn't share any
motivation but instead wrote her as a petulant teen you'd expect entering
adolescence, not at 18. She struggles to even tell her dad the song he edited was good, another song he wrote was good, anything.
The "love story" aspects were all failures. Kiersey and her "girlfriend" have
absolutely no chemistry and their story doesn't further the story in any way.
Similarly the weird attempt to hook Nick's character into Toni's was another waste. It just makes his character look pathetic and more sad.
So, Nick's character has decided to close his record store after 17 years. He has
lots of regrets about not having made it in music, about his career choice... His
daughter grinds home every one of those regrets when the chance comes. In the end she leaves but we don't get to see it, suddenly she is auditioning though she didn't want anything to do with it a few scenes ago, Dad is stuck in a dead end bar job after making the irrational decision to liquidate all of his records in one day though there was no pressure to leave the site, and nobody's love interests panning out.
It's sad, it's depressing and I don't need to see it again.
The Predator (2018)
Decent story with lots of unanswered questions
The Predator (2018) takes place in the same universe as some of the previous movies. How do you know? They reference previous visits.
The story is pretty good, though there are some pretty serious plot holes. It starts with Quinn McKenna and his troop of fellow military guys in Mexico and while they're trying to rescue some hostages an alien ship crashes through their group. Knowing nobody will believe him he takes some items from the crash and mails them home. Soon after he's arrested, interrogated and to discredit him they deem him insane. On the military paddy wagon he meets up with other soldiers with various disorders.
McKenna's son, who is probably the best character of the movie, has Asperger's. He's bullied at school and they show us how his amazing mind works. The box his dad sent winds up at the house and using his unique mind he decodes the language, figures out how to use their computers and then wears the items out for trick or treat. He's found by the bullies but escapes, then he's found by his dad and their new crew just as the Predator crowd catches up. What ensues is at times confusing.
Questions remain such as: Why is the Predator dog friendly to the people, always following them, but never used in any way to further the plot? How do the people know the hybrid Predator was bringing Earth something to help them? Yes, they deciphered the language but it's unclear. How did the dad know how to get in the craft later? Does he understand the language too? Why does Dr. Bracket seem to be just as much of a military action person as the rest when her backstory doesn't seem to say that?
For me, there was far too much unnecessary cursing, especially from the kid. The violence was much more geared towards the Predators but there are various human mutilations and lots of shooting/stabbing/slashing deaths. There were a few moments with good humor, which is needed to break the tension in some movies. There were some sexual innuendo bits, but primarily from the guy with Tourettes.
I liked it and would likely see it again. I wouldn't recommend it for kids. I've given this six stars.
Margaret Cho: Assassin (2005)
Sadly this is the worst
Typically I love Margaret Cho. I go see her when she's in town, I buy all of her DVDs, I have the posters. But this one was a big let down. It is seriously like watching some lame form of the news being broadcast. I laughed ONLY once and it was on her parody of Bjork because it was dead on. Please, please Margaret, go back to your REAL comedy and leave the boring news broadcasts to the folks in the suits at 10PM. There is little talk of her mother, little of her ordinary jokes and references and few attempts at anything funny at all. I highly recommend her first two DVDs, but beg of you to skip this one for your own sanity.
