How the Universe Works: Black Holes (2010)
Some good physics, lots of sensationalism
Starts off with some real science but then starts to ramp up the theatrics. If a black hole was even remotely near our solar system, we would've experienced a raft of symptoms of the gravitational force of black holes.
"Black holes are on the loose right here in our own cosmic neighborhood", yep, they are, but if they were near enough to actually impact earth in the next few million years we'd know about it now because we're looking for these things.
I'm sat here, after watching this, thinking that theres so much real science to report, on that we don't need to embellish the facts just to sell a video, but I now realise that to engage with the masses we have to sensationalise.
Punk and Its Aftershocks (1980)
Worth it for the archive footage on its own, would've got a ten but the linking voice overs were unnecessary, uninformative and undeniably awful!
Just watch it for the contemporary footage (performance and interviews) rather than retrospectives by Geldof
Arkansas (2020)
Give it a chance
Quite a quirky film that I found worth the effort of watching to the conclusion.
Echoes of the Coen Brothers and that type of dark, gallows humour, which may account for some low scores from watchers who may not appreciate it.
The Far Green Country (2018)
It's not about the journey!
I hate to be judgemental, but after watching this I'm afraid I can't.
There are a shedload of questions arising from this film.
Why do you take a 2yo on a journey like this and moan about him wanting to be with family. Especially when you're talking about a relationship that isn't that great.
Why complain about having to endure the trials of the journey when the choice to undertake this journey in "relative comfort" is their own and they could've gone home anytime they wanted?
Why????
They had the opportunity to see N. American wilderness up close and share it with us. What we end up with is a home movie rationalisation of the trip and the nativitisation of a random pregnancy.
They talk about telling stories in retrospect but I can't recall a single story or interview that involved a person they met on their journey, apart from Lori. We never learn anything about where we are.
17 Ranger books earns Kudos for Dakota he's a lovely and precocious kid. But he can get those from weekends away with the neccesary means.
At the end of the film they talk about living in community with people and offering time and skills but don't show any of this when it would be really interesting in terms of the journey!
Milltown Pride (2011)
Too much preaching, not enough gaming!
I love a baseball movie, even though I'm not American.
The whole genre reeks of spiritualism, mysticism and the righteousness of "the game" which is what I love. I thought this film would follow that line...
This particular movie is basically a faith parable that involves baseball. It's a shame it tries so hard to push its strict Christian ethic at the expense of the working classes, they are the ones quaffing liqour in jars FFS.
Ultimately it's a disappointment because all we see is the protagonist suddenly descend into drunkenness, then have an instant epiphany and rise into sober righteousness with no real journey undertaken.
couldve been a good film, ultimately it's spoilt by a narrow perspective.
