Terminal Voyage (1995)
So bad it's bad.
I'm giving it a 3 only because of nostalgia. I watched this movie as a teenager and thought it was cool. Forgot the title and went on a decade search for it. Finally found the name and watched it only to realize I was an idiot as a teenager. This is not even one of those movies that is so bad it's good, it's just bad on top of bad. The story could have been interesting if they hadn't done it a dozen times before. The acting was not terrible but they obviously did not understand or have direction on the plot or characters. The music is top of the bottom public domain kind of music and just goes on and on and on, louder than it should have been and often didn't fit the scene.
We are introduced to a bunch of ho-hum, typical characters with no back story or anything at all interesting about them. The twists are dull and don't make any sense at all. The ending would have been interesting if not being confusing or horrible graphics (SPOILERS!), all I could think was "why is there an experimental bunker under the Golden Gate Bridge?" At least I think it was the Golden Gate Bridge...
Bad, bad movie. I see why they never released it on DVD.
Human Lampshade: A Holocaust Mystery (2012)
Not worth it.
Why was this made?! I would have thought this was a mockumentary. The history part in regard to what was done with human skin was intriguing and sad but the rest of it was not worth watching. Maybe if this was shot during the time he was investigating it so we would have seen his real emotions but it was recreated and therefore his reactions were that of a big joke, before we were told it was not human skin. It made me feel anger that he was laughing and making jokes about the lampshade when it was possible it was someones skin. Just skip this one, it's not worth the watch. You wind up just being irritated with the journalist researching the lampshade.
The Dollanganger Saga: Petals on the Wind (2014)
Good acting, poor development and rushed.
SPOILERS! There's little to say about the actors and actresses. I thought they all did a great job and were believable. Julian was marvelous and was exactly everything I imagined him to be from the book.
Why this fails is the lack of storyline. We are basically given scenes from the book but no story to tie them together. They left out the Dr. Sheffield storyline, thankfully as it grossed me out in the book and really served no purpose to the story of Cathy and Chris. Most of the plots are still there but because the story is rushed, there's no backing for us to even care. If I had watched this and never read any of the books, I would have been confused. For instance, Carrie's doll. It's shown as being important to her but doesn't really give an answer as why other than her mother gave it to her. The real reason was because the doll was apart of a set from the dollhouse, the other doll had belonged to Cory. It's the only thing left of Cory's existence and that is why it is so important to her.
There are too many gaps and story left out to make this good. It's the acting that held it by a thread. This would have made an awesome mini-series, to tell more of the story and dig deeper into each character. I would have loved to see Julian and Cathy's relationship in it's entirety. Carrie's sadness and loneliness, Chris' complex (and disgusting) love for Cathy.
Lifetime has green lighted other books from Andrews, I certainly hope they get it right with those.
City of Angels (1998)
Really was a bad movie.
As a teenager, I loved this movie. I thought it was romantic in a tragic way, the way that only true love can be real love. As an adult I see this movie differently. Meg Ryan is flat and shows that she doesn't have a wide acting range. Cage and Ryan have no chemistry together, there was no real depth or emotion from either of them. I was they had cast Braugher as Seth (he was the only character I wanted to see more of, that smile!) and someone else as Maggie, left out the artsy flyovers and angels hanging out on road signs, then it might have been a decent movie. Dennis Franz was another character that brought the movie up a notch, the rest phoned it in.
Something else that bothered me, some of the music must have come from "Elevator Music: Greatest Hits", it didn't fit at all. The soft piano melody was sad, but the rest awful.
Good idea (I realize it was based on the German movie), poorly executed.
Marie Antoinette (2006)
Pretty to look at not so fun to watch
As a history fanatic I found this movie right on target with what really happened in the life of Marie Antoinette. As much as I loved Sofia Coppola's previous movies this one was lacking something. The actors and actress were great as well as the setting (at real locations, no less) and the costumes but still something irritated me about this movie. Oh yes, the music! Maybe Sofia was trying to convey some message about how young they were and portrayed their youthfulness through the soundtrack, who knows but it was out of place in such a beautifully filmed movie.
Kirsten Dunst was stunning, as usual in this film. She oddly looked like Diana Scarwid in her Mommie Dearest role in a few scenes. The chemistry between her and Jason Schwartzman was minimal, which since in real life the King and Queen were not too thrilled with one another at the beginning of their relationship, this was fitting. But toward the end, there seemed a tenderness toward one another that I thought they played on very well with gestures and looks.
I loved Jason Schwartzman's portrayal of King Louis XVI. From accounts the King was quiet, shy, said little to most and loved to hunt. Jason pulled this off perfectly and left you feeling sorry for him toward the end of this movie.
Character development was little. Toward the end of the movie I really didn't care what happened to them and the ending might have been fitting so not to dwell on their depressing fate but I still felt cheated in the end and all I was thinking of was how pretty this movie was too look at. And it made me want to go eat oodles of fancy cakes. Some of the actors spoke with an accent while most did not but it did not bother me as much as I thought it would with a period film.
Overall I gave this movie a 6 because of the fact that it was such a darn pretty movie! It had much more potential if it had more character development and a not the music-video-gone-wrong soundtrack.
