Willow (2022)
Great continuation of the movie..
Warwick Davis was great and I have to say that all the actors were amazing. All around amazing cast. If you're a fan of the movie you should love this. Obviously Val is a huge part of Willow and he is truly missed.
The special affects, the landscape, the plot...etc - I'm a big fan and this did not disappoint. I am truly looking forward to more and more better happen!
Reminds of the old days of playing D&D which is what the first movie brought to mind and this is the same. An amazing fantasy epic story with great characters, light moments, serious moments, adventure, love, hate.
Finished the last episode and I could watch 8 more right now.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
I can't recall a movie that makes me despise the lead characters as much
Absolute garbage. Literally 90 seconds in and I despised the lead characters. Unfortunately there's too much political morality injected in the film that doesn't need to be there. If you want a horror movie just watch the original one.
Peacemaker (2022)
Brilliant. Funny, great action, great acting. I love it.
I'm pretty critical of a lot of things but I have to say this is one of the best series I've seen in a long time. Everything about it comes together and works perfectly. The acting, the story/plot, the action, the special effects - all great. I have to say that I wasn't a big fan of the Suicide Squad movies which is why I was reluctant to watch this but I'm glad I did.
One of the most entertaining series out there and I can't wait to see more! Well done everyone on an amazing job!
Titans (2018)
Melodrama much?
3 seasons of this and while some aspects got better the series got less inviting to watch. I don't know if DC mandates this on their shows but it generally has the typical last 5 minutes of each show being about characters opening up, self reflecting on their dram/pain. The exact reason why I stopped watching Supergirl and The Flash.
Action sequences are great, acting is great, the costumes are....iffy. Some are amazing and some look like they come out of the bargain bin at Walmart. Overall decent to watch but the absolute non stop whinning, feet stomping, crying, etc is absolutely dreadful. More melodrama than a daytime soap. EVERY character from Batman/Bruce Wayne to Beast Boy to Wonder Girl.
If you like you action superheroes to moan, cry, complain nonstop then this is the series for you. I will not be returning to this. I watch fiction to escape the real life depressions and troubles not to sit down only to listen to it for about 80% of each episode.
It gets 4 stars only because of the acting and action (when it does happen). Otherwise, 2 stars.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Meh. Just a rework of Tolkien content but cheaper
Being a few episodes in I think that's all I can do. Most of the content is just a rehash of Tolkien/LOTR. It just seems to me like it's very lazy story book telling and most of it is just rewritten scenes from Lord of The Rings. Orcs are now something else. Ring wraths are now something else. They run to the ferry crossing with the bad guys right behind...etc etc.
It basically seems like someone read Lord of the Rings and thought "Hmm, ok I'm going to rewrite this and sell it as...Wheel of Time. " There are lines taking almost word for word!!
Acting is meh, plot is meh, CGI is meh. Extremely disappointing and this is more aligned with the old Saturday afternoon shows like Hercules and Xena. The fake beards are terrible! You can actually see the glue in some of them which equals to poor editing also.
If you know nothing of LOTR then maybe you wont mind seeing all the original ideas being copied in this. Otherwise, this is a hard pass. I'd rather spend 10 hours watching the original LOTR trilogy. Lol.
Nobody (2021)
Holy crap! Now this is an action movie!!
I saw Odenkirk's name attached to this and knew it would be worth watching and it did not disappoint. Well written, filmed, acted, choreographed, etc. An all around solid entry for an action flick and the first thing I thought when this was done was - when is the next one coming out!!
The transition by Odenkirk from 9-5 guy who has given up living almost to the had enough, time for an ass whooping guy is great. Christopher Lloyd is great as usual too. It was just an overall joy to fun and never a dull moment. A must see on anyone's list!
The Marksman (2021)
To call this an action/thriller is a big stretch!
Dreadful 'action' movie, sorry Liam. At almost 2 hours long this really would have greatly benefited from a heavy cut in the editing room and brought down to a lean 75-80 minutes. The biggest issues with this movie is 1) lack of action apart from a few small sections in the movie. And 2) extremely drawn out. The bulk of the movie is Liam with a kid where the dialogue is equal to a highschool play.
I got into bed at night thinking I'd have something decent to watch and instead just found myself fast forwarding these scenes just so I can get this movie over with. There's lots more that makes this movie sink in quicksand but that's the main of it. The stereotypical "bad guy", the extremely obvious clues and clueless mishaps that always keeps the baddies almost one step ahead and on and on.
Do yourself a favor and save yourself and go watch Death WIsh (original) if you want an action movie.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Wow!! Absolutely terrible
Speechless. I was looking forward to more Wonder Woman titles but this one is a disaster. The music is just over the top/over dramatic for every single scene. No the fault of the actors, it's just that the plot is terrible, music is terrible, the writing/script is terrible, etc.
Do yourself a favor, if you haven't seen it yet - don't!
P.S. Operation Wolf in the arcade didn't come out til 1987 - not 1984.
Batwoman (2019)
Unfortunately, this is bad. So bad, it's painful to watch.
I really wanted to like this and went into it with an open mind....and made it to episode 5 even though I should have quit after episode 1.
I don't really blame the actors so much, well...the lead villainess is just not believable. There's so much wrong here that it's hard to start. The plot is extremely weak, the acting - mediocre but likely due to a very poor script and likely non existent character development. The characters are very basic and uninteresting.
The main plot with the main villain is just not realistic or in the slightest - interesting. After 20 something years she comes back to wreak havoc on Gotham due to daddy issues? Common! And that point gets jammed down your throat at....every...possible..moment. Yes we get it, you hate your dad. Move on already. After 5 years of being away Batwoman returns and is still interested in a married ex girlfriend? Unless you're a creep or mentally unstable you'd likely move on after 5 years of ending a very short lived fling.
Anyhow, I could go on and on. Would love to love it but I hate it. Story line just isn't there and there really isn't anything else to carry this along. Gotham feels more like a second rate Albany, NY. There's really nothing visually interesting to look at.
With so much content available these days, save your time and go watch something else, anything really. You won't miss anything here except your time if you watch it.
Dead Night (2017)
Better movies out there to watch - like almost anything...
Well, where to begin?! I have to say that the trailer looked decent and it pretty much goes downhill from there. No real direction or point to it. Things are not really explained though it's obvious they were hoping for a sequel.
The biggest thing that ruins this movie is the true crime documentary style show that pops in throughout the movie. There really is no point to it as it doesn't lead to anything and not only that but it tells you what's going to happen (mostly) and who dies and who survives about 15 minutes into the movie so from that point on there really isn't any point to continue watching the movie.
A bad horror movie has pretty much one thing going for it and that's trying to figure out who dies and how. Take that away and you might as well watch paint dry.
There's nothing here to redeem this mess of a movie so put this movie in the "never watch" pile.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Refreshing!
Finally a Marvel movie with a lot more to chew on. It seems lately that the Marvel movies are just getting more and more ridiculous with special effects and action sequences where the thought of having a story line and proper acting is unheard of.
That is definitely not the case with Homecoming. The action/stunts/CGI take second stage here and there's an actual proper story/plot with very good acting!
This being the third movie incarnation/reboot of Spider-man I was somewhat weary but was definitely pleasantly surprised and am very much looking forward to the next movie.
If you're looking for a somewhat light, good superhero movie with some good action on the side than this makes for an entertaining night.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Total waste of time...
I've been looking forward to this movie for quite a while now and was extremely disappointed.
It would have been great as a short 10 minute prequel to a proper movie (which may be the sequel to this - last I heard a sequel was in the works). But as is at 90 minutes, which is pretty short these days it still felt like about 75 minutes too long.
The movie basically drops you in the middle of an already ongoing story. Apart from a few newspaper clippings on the wall it really doesn't tell you much as to who these people are, what the creatures are and so on. I guess it's up to you to figure that part out. That comes out as being lazy in my books as a storyteller.
It's almost entirely silent - dialog wise. Because of this and the very long dragged out scenes the movie just seems like it's even longer than it is.
There just isn't much going on. Very few things are explained. There are lots of plot holes or things that happen for no reason or scenes that simply go no where. Things finally get interesting at the end of the movie and then it just ends in the middle of a scene. That's why I said the movie just feels like a prequel where everything is explained in the second act and should have been 10 minutes long.
In my opinion, don't watch this and just wait for the sequel which I'm thinking is going to have a little bit more meat on its bone but I could be wrong, could just be more of the same.
Tomb Raider (2018)
This is like watching someones runthrough of a video game...it's crap!
What can I say? I guess to the point - this is not entertaining at all. The story line line is so basic that it could be from an 80's 'choose your own adventure' book. Or really just the back story of an Atari 2600 game...almost. The acting is also subpar but I don't blame the actors for that. Poor writing and likely poor directing is the result of the very bland performances.
The special effects are sub par also. To be honest, they probably could have made this exact movie when the Original Tomb Raider came out. I would have thought with the advances in cinema that at least there would be some decent stunts, or effects or something
In the end this just comes out as a b-movie with a big budget. If this was a game it might actually be decent. Seems like they tried too hard to have this play out as a game than it be a proper movie.
Lots of better and crappier movies out there that are better worth your time.
Ready Player One (2018)
Entertaining and worth watching
I was putting off watching this because mainly of the heavy special effects (mostly CGI for the duration of the film) but once I put it on it definitely kept my attention.
While long at 140 minutes it doesn't feel like it as there is never a dull moment. The film moves quickly along and the cgi is so well done that after a while you don't even think of it ( I generally prefer live action).
I never read the book (and don't plan to) so I can't compare the two but if you're looking for something good to watch this is it. Great action (both CGI and live action), great acting, story, just overall a well put together movie.
Would have gotten a higher rating from me if it weren't for a few minor quirks and the somewhat sappy ending.
Black Lightning (2018)
Was hoping for more...
So yeah... This feels more like a 1990's tv series more than anything else mainly due to its production quality. I think if you make it past the first few episodes you'll probably stick to the end. There is an initial hump where you just kinda question the whole thing but the characters grow on you and it does seem like an interesting superhero BUT.
The youngest daughter is just a spoiled brat and it just keeps getting shoved in your face about what a whiny brat she is that you just wish she wasn't around.
A lot of dragged out scenes about domestic issues that (in my opinion) the series could have done without.
The villains, while interesting, kinda get lost halfway in the season and you don't really know who's doing what what or who. Especially at the end of the season where they quickly jumble them up and conclude their arc without explaining much (meanwhile spending the whole season building them up). It just seems to fizzle at the end. The whole plot of the season for the villains just seems super simple too. It's what would be in one episode of an Adam West Batman series.
Too many flashbacks! Holy cripes! This is a problem I find with a lot of series lately. Lots and lots of long flashback scenes that really, in most cases, do little to advance the story or plot along.
Having said that, there are some redeeming qualities. Mainly, the values that the main character has and tries to pass on even though it's a little preachy at times. It's fairly light, enjoyable at times and has it's moments.
In terms of superhero-ism action and story I would put this as a fluffy, have in the background type of series. Nice to watch but if you miss a few minutes of it while doing the dishes or something, you're probably not missing much.
Lost in Space (2018)
Potential but needs work if it wants to keep going.
Like a lot of reviewers here, I wanted to like it. For the most part I did but it definitely has its flaws. I grew up watching the original series, even though it was way before my time so I definitely had that to compare it with.
First big change was the robot. The iconic robot from the 60's show was replaced with a more humanoid, mobile version. Maybe what Short Circuit would look like many generations after. To my surprise though the robot worked really well in this. Having something that is more mobile makes sense in modern sets (actual environments) as opposed to low budget 60's sets. If anything, the robot steals the show in this.
Visually, the entire series looks amazing. The vehicles, the special affects, the props, etc. Well done to whoever was in charge of that.
The problems I think lies in that the entire first season is just one long introduction episode. The first season is basically what would have happened in the first episode in the original show. So in that regards, things we're drawn out needlessly. Where are all the adventures the Robinson family are suppose to get up to?!
Melodrama - this seems to be a new thing with Scifi series lately. The new Star Trek is plagued with it and this is no different. The Robinson Family meets Days of Our Lives soap opera. Everyone is in crisis almost ALL the time! Yes, please include these 5 minute long scenes where the character unloads their emotional baggage and then please talk about that 5 minute scene 5 minutes later.
Dr.Smith. Ah, what a classic character! As much as I love Parker Posey there is nothing to love about her Dr.Smith. She is the most classic of all soap opera 'bad guy'. There was nothing charming about the manipulation that was going on and most times it didn't make sense to keep digging herself deeper and deeper. Seems like it was just written as her being as bad as possible without actually thinking about the why.
Overall. The show is too serious and slow paced. Lighten it up a bit and let's get into some adventures! And PLEASE quit it with the melodrama!
Will give season 2 a try if it comes out but if it's more of the same I'll quite right away.
Supernatural (2005)
I have to be honest - this is the best show on TV!
I'm pretty critical when it comes to shows and even if I like a show there's usually several things I dislike or annoy me about that show BUT not Supernatural. 13 years now and the show is still fresh, amazing, well written, well acted, etc.
The cast is wonderful and despite all the heavy tones of the show they still manage to keep it light by throwing the odd 'light' episode in there which is one of the secrets to it's long success I think. To be able to carry on a major story arc/plot line but also take time out completely from that and do something different.
The Scooby Doo episode? Common! That was brilliant!
Really guys - 13 years and I hope you're on for another 13 years. Was glad to hear that season 15 is most likely as good as confirmed now.
Thank you for all the great shows. Supernatural rock!
Jigsaw (2017)
Move on! Same trash as this franchise has been pumping.
Well this is it! The last Saw/Jigsaw movie I will ever watch. I think I made it to the 4th movie in the franchise and that was garbage. I skipped the next couple of movies because of it but I heard good things about this latest one. Not true, just as bad if not worse.
To put it quite simply this is just the laziest writing ever for a horror movie (or any movie!). Its a major yawn fest and you just end up looking at the time throughout the movie waiting for it to be over.
The story line is very simplistic. The characters are just awful (and the acting also). Lots of things don't really make sense. It's not so much that there are plot holes but more that there is no plot basically. You just scratch your head throughout the movie.
Apart from the fact that there isn't a story, the worse thing is just the annoying characters making stupid decisions or not making them- over and over again. In the end you just want everyone to die.
The true puzzle is how this movie ended up being made with that script!
Homeland (2011)
Move on and don't watch this!
Look, the first two seasons of this show were brilliant. If anything, watch up to the end of season two and move on to the next series.
We ended up getting to the beginning of season 5 and then called it quits after that. The story/plot lines are just too fantastical for this type of series, Claire Danes's character is just to insane/unstable/unbelievable to make this work. Every second scene you just shake your head in total disbelief as to what she's doing.
It was interesting for the first two seasons seeing her try to handle her mental illness and they really did a good job at portraying that. After that it was just like "yep, shes crazy and that's what she does! Oh well!".
It's really a shame because there are some great actors (Mandy, Miranda...just to name a couple) and some really interesting things going on but all of that is ruined but Claire Danes' character, her constant, CONSTANT need to cry and Claire's over the top, over acting! Holy crap! I don't know what the directors or producers are thinking or who's fault it is...but common! 1) A person in her position would not be crying all the time when the shit hits the fan. 2)it is extremely unbelievable and takes you straight out of the story when that happens. 3) It is definitely not showing a strong female role. Basically saying that women can't handle stress and need to cry all the time when put in that position.
ENOUGH with the crying already!! That's probably the number reason why we stopped watching. This show went from a solid 9 to a crapfest in no time. Incredible how a show could flip around so fast.
So many good, long running series out there that I recommend you stay away from this one to start with.
Van Helsing (2016)
Bad with some good or good with some bad?
I watched season 1 and 2 (unfortunately for me perhaps) and I think I can only tolerate this show by skipping over half the scenes. There are some good qualities to the show, some good characters/acting, some good plot/story lines but you also have to sit through some pretty bad acting/characters, extremely awful fight scenes that look like it was some high school kid that choreographed the scenes and also sit through some bad plot points.
Dmitri is just garbage. Awful character and the actor isn't any better. Looks like he came out of some B rated 1980's tv horror show. His bald henceman is absolutely unbearable. As soon as I see that guys face I have to skip to the next scene.
Half the story lines or side plots really don't make any sense and aren't productive to furthering the story along. We don't need to know the back story of all the minor characters that come along!!
The first half of season two is just full of melodrama with most of the characters breaking down and whining about their feelings or this or that. Just suck it up and move on!
It has the potential of being a pretty decent show but the writing needs to be improved. The overacting with the actors playing most of the vampires needs to be brought down by about 2000 notches. The stunt coordinator or whoever is doing the fight scenes needs to be fired and replaced with someone who is competent. Save the melodrama for the daytime soaps and give your main characters a backbone.
If you're a die hard fan of Van Helsing type crap you might be able to sit through this, otherwise move on to something that's worth your time.
The Axle and Julius characters are decent and a nod to the actors playing them. Without those two I would have quit two episodes into season 2.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Ugh. Utter garbage.
This is not Star Trek. It's a scifi melodrama with a thin Star Trek skin on top of it.
I really wanted to like it and I kept going through 12 episodes of it! What was I thinking? I should have stopped after the 1st episode.
My biggest (one of many) complaint is the melodrama and the politically correct agenda that keeps getting shoved down your throat. EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER whines and cries about how insecure they are, not being able to do this, being afraid about that and on and on. The scenes are dragged out too when this happens to the point where you just end up skipping over the scenes before you start bashing your head against the wall. These are hardly qualities that befit a Starfleet officer, let alone one on a fairly important ship.
There are a lot of holes in the plot too. A lot of decisions just don't make sense with the biggest head scratcher being in the first episode with Michael and why...I won't say anymore due to spoilers
The Klingons! Ugh!! There was no need to reinvent an entire race (yes changes were made to the Klingons between TOS and NG. But they were pretty minor and they've stayed pretty much the same throughout 4 incarnations/series. This was just a move to put some dumba$$'s signature on this and it back fired terribly.
FINAL THOUGHT. There are some good moments but they're so few and far in between that a show is no longer worth watching if you sit through an episode hoping for that 30 second great scene. Without the Star Trek skin this would be a more tolerable scifi show but..as is, skip it.
Frontier (2016)
Meh - so, so. **Very minor spoilers...somewhat.
I live in Canada and ventured to James Bay and I love history....so it's somewhat interesting to me only because through watching the show I ended up researching a bunch of things about that time period.
That being said. haha. I wanted to like this show (and I do) but it's really just something to watch while I'm doing other things. 6 episodes a season with 2 out so far isn't a big commitment too. Blasted through the series in a few days.
The biggest problem for me which instantly takes me out of the moment or the story is the teleportation that seems to take place when they travel from the north (which I think they actually don't mention but it would have to be on James Bay or Hudson Bay) and Montreal. It is so ridiculous. "Ok I just got here but I'll going back to Montreal tonight". Cut scene - the next day (seemingly) ok I'm in Montreal but I forgot something up is Fort James so I'll be heading back out shortly". This is a voyage that would have taken weeks if not months to undertake and one character feels that travelling from the north to Montreal to sell a few pelts is totally fine? What?! There would have been trading posts that he could have sold those too without making a trip to Montreal.
Another problem - They travel between the North and Montreal like it's two blocks down the road (as mentioned). No one ever carries any provisions, packs, etc to make this long trip. They're basically dressed up like they're taking the dog for a walk down the street in a manner of speaking.
Also....canoes for fur traders were massive. You see them supposedly transporting fur in these 16 foot long canoes when they're suppose to be transporting mega quantities of fur. They would need thousands of canoes (really)...just doesn't make sense.
GOOD STUFF. There's potential here for something decent. it's not too late. Costumes are great. The lighting is fabulous actually. The story is super interesting though I think the writing is missing out on a lot of interesting story/plot lines. Acting for the most part is good.
BOTTOM LINE - If you're looking for a light, fluffy series to kill some time and that's decent this will do the job. If you're looking for a jaw dropping, leave you at the edge of your seat type thing....you won't like this.
Supergirl (2015)
Don't bother. It had potential but it keeps getting worse and worse - SPOILERS
I went into this series hoping that it would be another Smallville or something similar but was pretty disappointed with season 1. It did seem like there was potential so I decided to give season 2 a try and have been more and more disappointed with each episode I watch.
My biggest problem is Supergirl's attitude. She behaves like a spoiled, self-entitled, super arrogant, super bitchy - dick. As Jimmy and Wynn set up for Guardian she knocks them down every chance she has and refuses to let someone else do what they want. She behaves like this with Mon-El and pretty much everyone else. This goes on and on throughout all of season two (up to episode 14 so far).
The fights are really badly edited. There are so many instances where you see the punch or kick fly by the opponent and missing them by a good foot (f not more) and that takes you out of the moment. It looks more like they were filming the rehearsals rather than the actual sequences. Some fights are just unbareable to watch because of that. It's a shame because the stunts and fights for the most part are well done so it's a shame to ruin good work by poorly placed cameras and bad editing.
Supergirl is an idiot. Over and over again she knocks down the bad guy, then turns around for whatever reason and just stands there. Meanwhile the bad guy gets up and kicks her ass. Happens over and over. Just not believable and it makes the character seem like they're pretty incompetent and shouldn't be fighting in the first place. For being someone that has super speed she sure can let herself get her ass kicked left, right and center by just regular humans with the odd gadget.
Plot line in season two is almost non existent. There's a vague story arch going on in the background but the episodes are filled with melodrama and bad acting. Please, tell me for the next 5 minutes why your feelings are hurt, why I disappointed you, why you don't like me, etc, etc. This should be called - Supergirl - The soap opera.
My last point which made me say OK, I'm not watching this anymore was episode 14 of season two. Apart from almost nothing going on (the plot line/story could have been advanced in less than 5 minutes, the rest was fluffer). Kara and Alex get their father back (was rescued) who has been working for Cadmus for 14 years, they reinstate him in the DEO with full access and no questions asked? WHAT?? Common, what sort of morons write sh*t like this? The season is full of moments like this where you just scratch your head and say "UH, WTF?!"
I will say that the acting has gotten better over time. Somewhat normal I'd say for the actors to take some time to fall into their roles but that's definitely not enough to save the series.
Final thoughts - don't waste your time unless you like Days of Our Lives and enjoy seeing the plot/storyline advance about as fast as a daytime soap opera and also enjoy all the melodrama that comes with it. In order for this show to survive you'd have to get a whole new writing crew in and reinvent the show. Not impossible but is it going to happen? Likely not. No wonder it has a low rating.
The Mindy Project (2012)
Watch the first two seasons and then STOP!
Like other reviewers said, the show goes downhill in season three and keeps going downhill from that point on.
If you're looking for a light, funny comedy this is it for the first two seasons. Don't bother watching beyond that point. The show was pretty hilarious up until Mindy and Danny start getting involved. The dynamic in the show completely changes and from mid season three and on it's like you're watching a completely different show that is 1-not funny and 2-quite frankly, pretty annoying at times.
Too bad, they had a good thing going and F'ed it all up. We stopped watching right around episode 9 in season 4 and we will not be going back to it.
Legends of Tomorrow: Blood Ties (2016)
Meh - my general impression of this series. - spoiler
I thought I'd give this series a try but after three episodes I won't be wasting my time anymore.
Overall I enjoyed the three episodes but the show is all about killing this monster immortal Savage. What they actually need to do is just stop him. In this episode they actually have a chance of doing that. Rip cuts his throat and at that moment he 'dies' after saying something like "I'll heal from this" and then falls to the floor "dead".
What really got me is this - they leave his body there and then proceed in the next scene to start tracking him again!!! Holy crap. Take his damn body and stick it in a vault of some kind and bingo. He might heal but if he's stuck in a box he won't be killing anyone. Or chop up his body into a hundred pieces and stash those in individual vaults hidden through time.
Absolutely idiotic and it totally put me off the show.
