Black Panther (2018)
Besides the visuals, pretty boring
For a while now, Marvel seems to be getting a lot of praise for mediocre movies; Thor Ragnarok, Spider-Man Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy etc
This seems to continue.
Essentially, it's the Lion King. Main character is overthrown by a relative who then proceeds to take the throne and make everyone believe the hero is dead, only for the hero and a small band of companions to return and fight off the villain and retake the throne.
There is little creativity here in terms of storytelling; the villain is probably the best thing about this movie, even if his fate is as predictable as the majority of Marvel villains.
There are few if any reasons to care for the characters. There are no stakes at all, and the plot is pretty predictable.
Of all the plots to tell, you go with telling one similar to the Lion King. Well done, Marvel, well done.
The Big Bang Theory: The Recollection Dissipation (2017)
Another poor episode
The episode felt as it could have have been cut into three. Instead, it's another step down from what was once a brilliant series. Sheldon tries to work on two projects at once, Sheldon forgets an entire afternoon and Bernadette struggles to accept she'll have to go back to work and leave the baby. They're all cut down into small chunks that neither of them is the least bit interesting. The ending is rushed and left me feeling as if I was somehow supposed to have enjoyed it. Once again there are silly lines used just to make the audience laugh, failing to make the viewer on the other side of the screen even chuckle.
The saving grace was Bernadette and Penny being their usual selves but overall, it's time to put this series to bed - permanently.
The Big Bang Theory: The Conjugal Conjecture (2016)
Starting to get back on track...
The previous seasons haven't been all that great, the cliffhangers have been mediocre and so this upcoming season has been met by me with great anticipation. The premiere isn't bad, and the episode doesn't feel like a two parter but instead feels new and fresh. Penny's family is a delight to watch; her brother being a personal favorite. Sheldon is as usual hilarious, and there isn't any Leonard/Penny rubbish which endangers the day. If you've been disappointed with the previous seasons like I have, then I'm very confident that season 10 will be getting back to the good old days of TBBT. Overall it's a fun episode that expands nicely with Penny's family and I'm hoping to see more of them.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
My favorite comic book movie of all time
X-Men Days of Future Past unites the old and the new members of my most beloved Marvel superhero team in a spectacle movie that I cannot stop thinking about. Time travel movies are difficult to pull off and yet somehow Bryan Singer pulls it off with little difficulty. There's so many characters here (all played brilliantly) that it may have been chocked full and they would have been crammed in; but they're not! Each X-Man from the past and the present have their time to shine and whilst not all have equal screen time, their moment's are still equally as impressive. The entire film is inspiring; Magneto sending a football field up through the air, the Quicksilver sequence, the Sentinel attacks etc.
Joe and Caspar Hit the Road (2015)
Cringeworthy Bad
So I noticed a channel was showing this on television so I thought I would give it a go. I tried watching this today; got passed half an hour and decided I'd rather do something better with my time. How they can call this a movie is beyond me. It's horribly scripted with a poor effort of not being annoying every scene. The comedy is awful and I hope they stick to the internet and not actual television (or the cinema)where decent things belong on. I cannot recommend this to anyone since it is so bad unless you like their brain-dead humour. The idea is nice but the execution made me want to vomit; it really isn't any good. Please avoid if you value your sanity!
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Batman has a qaurel with Superman
The anticipation for Batman and Superman sky-rocketed, fans were going crazy and so naturally I went to see the film expecting something great. What I received was a mediocre film with fancy special effects but nothing much else.
Pros:
Ben Affleck is rather good. Not amazing but he's good enough.
Henry Cavill is still my favorite Superman/Clarke Kent
Jeremy Irons is great
The end fight is cool
Cons
The writing is so lazy! For example, Bruce Wayne decides at Lex's party to steal some data. A staff member comes in, asks what he's doing and then leaves him thinking he's not up to anything suspicious. There's the jammed in Justice League members, the email from Bruce to Wonder Woman explaining why she wants the photo of her back...and the poor reason to get Batman and Superman fight and the resolution as well.
Did the writers and Snyder just give up on the movie? I mean why call a movie Batman Vs Superman and only have an eight-minute fight scene?
Oh, and what's up with the reason for the fight anyway? Batman wants to take down superman because there's a "1 percent chance he could burn the whole place down" well shouldn't we all be locked up because there's a 1 percent chance we might all do terrible things? C'mon think of something better. The whole fight could have been settled with a single line but nope, Batman conveniently doesn't listen and starts the eight-minute battle.
Let's talk about the end of that fight shall we? Crying out "Martha!" is such a cop-out. How does Superman even know Bruce's mother is called Martha? Were we to know Clark looked up Bruce Wayne since we were shown that he hadn't heard of Bruce half way through the movie when they first met.
I could go on about the ridiculous looking Abomination, sorry I meant Doomsday or how easy it was for the hilarious Lex Luthor to get control of the most deadly creature on Krypton. And I could ask why Superman killed a guy and seemingly a village from what the dark skinned woman in the court said. Nah I won't.
The Big Bang Theory: The Matrimonial Momentum (2015)
My worst fears are confirmed, the show is going downhill
Last season's finale was a blunder - but I took it as a little error. After all, no TV show is perfect and so I remained excited for the return TBBT. However upon watching the first episode of the new season, I am still instilled with fear that the show is becoming more of a soap opera than a light hearted comedy. I have nothing to say about this other than it is tripe. I miss the golden days when they went on adventures (such as to the Skywalker Ranch) and did interesting things. We don't need relationship dramas! However promising episodes are on the horizon, I will think about them and ignore this trash of an episode.
Ant-Man (2015)
A Tale to Astonish indeed!
A couple of years ago I would have scoffed at the idea of an Ant-Man movie. The name is pretty silly and to see someone shrink would have looked silly, especially in a cinematic movie with gods and super powered individuals.
But this movie kicked my ass! Every expectation was blown away and I had the time of my life. It's certainly a Marvel production and yet had it's own unique twist that made it stand out. Michael Douglas, Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily are fantastic as is the main villain.
The action is mind blowingly awesome as Ant-Man shifts from small to big when he takes on foes...and the final fight? Awesome.
There is however one fight scene that I did not see coming and was not shown in the trailers.
Falcon vs Ant-Man is by far my favorite moment in the entire movie! And Michael Pena may just be my favorite person in the entire cinematic movie...him and Anthony the ant ;)
One gripe is that the main villain Darren Cross seems a bit like Loki (trying to prove himself to someone close to him) and I wish Marvel wouldn't kill off villains all the time. Cross to me didn't have much time to grow. From the start he was always this angry millionaire who was a total jerk.
Overall it's a really fun movie. I don't usually see movies more than once except Guardians of the Galaxy, but I saw Ant-Man twice and I'm more than happy to see it again.
Arrow: My Name Is Oliver Queen (2015)
Whoa!! That's what I call a finale
I had so much fun with this episode, it was truly a great finale and had some of the most intense scenes during the whole season. Though despite the action there were some brilliantly acted character scenes from each and every member. I truly wasn't sure how Felicity, Diggle, Malcolm, Laurel and Ray were going to survive being intoxicated but the writers came up with a brilliantly clever solution that I didn't see coming. Once again this episode truly felt like cinema quality and not your everyday television episode. Overall this episode was brilliant with great action and great character scenes. The final scenes showing what Malcolm and Ray were up to sent a tingle in my spine and it can only get better.
The Big Bang Theory: The Commitment Determination (2015)
You call this a finale???
I'm a big TBBT fan, I love the show and always will (hopefully). From what I can recall, each finale has been interesting and exciting but seriously, nothing much happens in this lackluster of an episode.
If Penny or Emily had revealed to be pregnant than that would have definitely interested me, in fact I don't really care what had happened so long as it was different to Sheldon revealing that he'd been preparing to propose to Amy. Is weddings all that the creators can think up for these couples to go through? First Howard and Bernadette, then Penny and Leonard and now Sheldon and Amy.
I wasn't too surprised Amy had broken up with Sheldon but now that he revealed a ring, it's painfully obvious they'll get back together. So pray tell me what was the point in her breaking up?
Leonard once again continues to be whiny and clingy and causes drama so no surprise there.
Howard continues to be someone who needs Bernadette to do all the tough things like kick Stewart out of the house but fail, so I fail to see why we needed to see any of that.
Raj gets little screen time with Emily and even then she's at risk (after 1 season) of being dumped and never seen on the show again - despite being the most unique and interesting woman on the show.
I'd like to finish up by saying that I will be looking forward to season 9 but this was just a disappointing finale.
The Wedding Ringer (2015)
Great fun, great time
I hadn't seen much marketing for this movie but it seemed like a good film to take my partner to see for Valentines day. I wasn't sure what to expect, I knew it was a comedy but other than that, the plot was completely unknown to me.
This movie was a pleasant surprise for me, it was hilerious, original and felt fresh compared to other "modern" comedies where the jokes are all about sex and violence and swearing.
No, this comedy is for everyone and I found myself loving it from the opening scene. The performance are great and so's the actions and...oh it's glorious!
The Big Bang Theory: Pilot (2007)
Great way to start off
When I first discovered TBBT (The Big Bang Theory) it was at a friend's house at dinner. I was instantly drawn into the bizarre world of this dysfunctional yet entertaining friendship between four guys and their new neighbor, Penny.
So I tracked down the first ever episode and boy was I pleased I found it. It's a delight to watch as we're introduced to the awkward and unsociable, Sheldon Cooper, or Leonard who's trying too hard to win over Penny. Then there's the adorable Rajesh who can't speak to women and then Howard who's the comedic womanizer.
This first episode is a ton of fun but is just the tip of a very large iceberg.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Doesn't get much better than this
It's almost midnight, in fact it's only a few minutes away and whilst I impatiently sit waiting for the movie, I can't help but think back on the previous midnight movie I saw. That film was, to say the least, disappointing and not as great as I had hoped.
This film though...this film is amazing! My favorite of all Marvel films without a doubt. It's script, story and character development are what glued me to the screen, it was a heart pounding thriller that kicked some serious arse.
I'm not a huge fan of the First Avenger but believe me, the Winter Soldier taught me not to underestimate the good Captain America. He's a badass Avenger who could probably give Iron Man a run for his money. Everyone performs brilliantly and they deliver the well crafted line so well.
If there was one film that deserved an Oscar, it was this.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
A 5 star is me being nice.
As the title says, I'm being incredibly nice.
This film has nothing but corny dialogue, immature humor that drives me crazy and the least said on some of the Autobots the better, and I don't just mean the Twins.
I love the 2007 film, it's beautiful and mesmerizing but this is a shamed sequel that I hope gets written out of continuity. The action and visuals are brilliant but it still doesn't make up for the so- called plot that makes little sense and is very similar to the superior original.
In total; the film is immature, ridiculous and the only supports it has is the robots and the action sequences. Otherwise it's a jumbled mess that can only be remembered as a failed sequel that opens itself up to backlash.
Run All Night (2015)
Your everyday action film
Run All Night is Liam Neeson's next action film and the first one I've seen in cinemas. Mostly I'm not interested in these types of action films but the trailers really interested me and I wanted to find out more.
I'm not entirely sure what to say about this movie other than Liam Neeson did a great job as usual and some of the action set pieces were really enjoyable. Especially the tower block sequences which we witnessed some sweet visuals and heart pounding action.
Though my problem is with everyone else. No one really stands a chance again Liam Neeson in this film, they're just an excuse to watch our lead star beat people up. Everyone performs well, it's just there isn't really an emotional attachment to any of them except Neeson but even that is somewhat diminished due to the opening scene.
Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015)
Terrific entertainment
I adore this movie. It's funny, clever, cheeky and a delight to watch. The trailers made it look good but the film itself succeeded in making a one hour and twenty something movie great!
The plot is straightforward and easy to understand but it doesn't treat it's audience stupid. The no dialogue thing works brilliantly because the characters actions are so well designed that we know precisely what they're thinking.
And the finale? You know how in some films, you know how the protagonist going to be alright? Well the same thing happened here yet I was genuinely questioning whether or not someone wouldn't be returning for a sequel.
Overall, the film is brilliant and I'm looking forward to a sequel.
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
127 minutes gone that I can never take back!
Let me try to explain the plot to you.
A woman from Earth is being hunted by some aliens because she's a princess or a queen of a powerful house in the universe, whilst Channing Tatum and Sean Bean set out to protect her.
Blimey that's a mouthful for me. My partner and I were waiting in line to see a film when we spotted Jupiter Ascending, we love science fiction so it only seemed reasonable that we see it. Right? Yeah, I kind of wish we hadn't.
To be blunt, the film has so much stuffed into it, I couldn't tell who was doing what, who was working for who and...yeah it's bad. The visual's are stunning and it's the only real reason the movie gets a 5. The action sequences themselves are not too bad either but overall it's just not a good film.
The Avengers (2012)
The Avengers! Earth's Mightiest Superhero film?
The Avengers is the sixth film in what I consider to be a reasonably impressive series of movies. We start off with an intense opening that had me on the edge of my seat until the opening logo popped up showing it's beautiful face. The opening provides us with a decent explanation of who the bad guy is and what needs to be done to stop him. In this case, the villain is none other than Loki who's popped down to Earth because he wishes to rule it. Well if he can't have Asgard, there's no reason Earth should be any different right?
I appreciate how Joss Whedon managed to take the time to introduce each member of the Avenger's separately. The dialogue between Natasha (Black Widow) and Bruce Banner is a particular favorite of mine, it's fun but without going off track and becoming silly. We see Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans) doing the one thing he knows, go to the gym. To me, it's understandable to take out any stress on a punching bag whilst also probably being the only place he's familiar with.
Twenty something minutes in and we finally see Tony Stark and once again he shines, his humor and wit is fantastic and he works great alongside Gweyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts) and the lovable Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).
Needless to say, the acting by all is brilliant in this film. No one made me cringe or hope they got struck by lightning just to stop them from acting. Which brings me to Thor played by Chris Hemsworth. The guys massive here and I totally brought that he was the god of thunder here. His first interaction with Iron Man and Captain America is breath taking and visibly stunning, because you know, every superhero has to fight one another.
This leaves me with the final Avenger. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Boy, was he wasted in this movie. I don't mind he was mind controlled, but did he really have to have a pathetic twelve minutes of screen time????
I would have forgiven this if he'd at least took on the Avengers, it would have been a nod to how brilliant the character is and would have been a middle finger to all those who thought he was lame. But no, I was not pleased with his offensively small amount of screen time.
I'm not just giving it a 7 out of 10 because of my issue with Hawkeye. To me, it doesn't have that "watch again" vibe going, I find myself ignoring the movie and going for something else to watch. Maybe it's the humor that at times, begins to irritate me. The whole "That man's playing Galaga, he thought we wouldn't notice, but we did" scene caused me to roll my eyes, was it necessary? No. Another reason is none of it really stands out anymore.
Yes the action scenes are fun to watch but nothing in the movie really makes me go "Wow!" every time I watch it, except the opening sequence. I'm not saying I find it boring, but I just don't care if Hawkeye is jumping off a roof or Thor's sharing blows with the Hulk.
Needless to say, is the movie bad? Absolutely not. It's a movie that is fun for everyone, the acting is spot on and the visuals look stunning. It's just not my most memorable movie in terms of scenes and the humor isn't all that great.
