Booksmart (2019)
Cute teen rom com.
I don't understand the haters. This is a well written super cute teen comedy. It's fun and life affirming. No one dies, no bullets or guns, no CGI, just fun characters having one of the biggest nights of their lives. It's overdramatized and silly and over the top in the best way. The two main characters are smart and witty and cute. The supporting cast is equally as entertaining. Just enjoy it and let go my friends. Not berthing Shakespeare or marvel here. Just a fun rom com. Enjoy.
This Is the End (2013)
Wowza.
Such a beautiful and meaningful bro love story. I laughed, I cried, it became a part of my dump that day. The fact that it's based on a true story also made it even more meaningful. I've actually been to LA and every day there is just like this movie. The brilliant writers captured the essence of this rapturous self absorbed fake city that I stupidly still love. God help me. Every day a new LA disaster with fake friends all chasing celebrity or any whisp of fame. Most are too pretentious to care but feign their love convincingly before they throw you in front of the next oncoming bus. How I miss it. Carry on Garth, uh Seth I mean. You made LA comedy gold.
The Batman (2022)
Why?
I really have no idea why this was rated so highly. It was way way too long, brooding, dark and frankly boring. I so miss Christopher Nolan's direction and vision. Pattinson was dull and lifeless and frankly hard to root for. Alfred was mostly missing. Cat woman was a nice addition earning at least some relief from boring brooding Pattinson.
Moonfall (2022)
The reviews, good and bad, are correct
Whelp, it's a total mess that unexpectedly shines at times. First, fire everyone that writes the awful formulaic dialogue/drivel these poor actors must spew. It's just horrible that every director of a blockbuster disaster must include the same stupid save his/her family trope as the world explodes around them. You've seen it countless times and they do the same lame stupid thing here. Somebody save us from inept writers.
That said, the underlying sci fi story here is unique and wonderful as it introduces megastructures and alien world possibilities and otherworldly advanced tech. The graphics are also stunning. I saw it an an imax theater and it was so visually impressive. I would see it again, but with earplugs so I don't have to listen to the super lame script again.
As a popcorn movie it succeeds. I just wonder how good this movie could have been if someone not tied to the ridiculous "man saves his family while everyone else on the planet dies" trope, had a chance to write something, anything different and more realistic and meaningful.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Love these actors, but why oh why?
I love Wonder Woman and the cast here is again terrific. But no cast can make a bad story with bad direction have a good result. All the charm and joy of the first WW are gone here. It's a sad and disappointing attempt at a movie.
Station Eleven (2021)
Love it or hate it. Both are valid.
I find it captivating both in so many ways. It's an amazing character study with great actors and direction. But I could also see how people would be frustrated by the disjointed nature of the story. Patient viewers will be rewarded but only if they can accept the non linear narrative. It's not Disney. Thank heavens.
The Expanse (2015)
Three times
After a slow but informative start, the pacing picked up and I was hooked. I rarely watch something twice. I've watched the entire series three times. It's a grand space opera not to be missed.
Invasion (2021)
Slow train to self reflection
An fast paced exciting alien invasion story it's not. Don't engage if this is what your expecting. A dive into the best and worst of us it is. How do we behave when the bottom falls out? It's more a human horror story. It's an Invasion of our best and worst instincts when times try men's and women's souls. It's disjointed and frustrating at times but still pays off as a psychological thriller.

No Time to Die (2021)
Classic Bond
Don't believe the haters reviews on this site. I have no idea why they are so nasty. This is a classic Bond movie and great send off for Daniel Craig. The strong women characters are compelling and the story line complex but not overly so. Lots of exciting action, snappy dialogue and good pacing. It was worth the wait.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
C7 is a moving reminder
I watched this first because it's Sorkin. But the cast made it must see. It's a moving portrayal of 60s American madness that we seem to be reliving with another madman in chief. History sadly rhymes. The C7 reminds us not to sit idly by.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
So beautifully flawed
How rare that we get to see such a beautiful and flawed woman conquering a foreign land where men traditionally rule. She's a badass and her natural intelligence is her superpower. Great acting, casting, direction and script.
Perry Mason (2020)
Not my genre but I couldn't look away
My title says it all. Good luck leaving once you start. Kudos to casting; writing and well...everyone associated.
The Vast of Night (2019)
Vastly different
You cannot describe this film. It must be experienced. There is magic in a great story beautifully unfolding. You can't leave it and you can't look away. You are just swept up in it.
Never Have I Ever (2020)
Never did I ever think..
Never did I ever think a teen dramedy could be so good! Snappy & clever dialogue with perfect nerdy characters who reveal human foibles, insecurities and imperfections so well. I am way too old to be enjoying it this much! It's silly funny and charming too. Kudos to the Amazing writers and the nearly perfect cast. Compliments also to the diversity of characters and Indian cultural insights. More, please more episodes soon!
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
It was the Godzilla of bad monster movies.
Great casting and big CGI couldn't save this wreck. The truly sappy and inane dialogue that drove the ridiculous family backstory was so dreadful that it sucked most of the life out of the movie. So sad because I love Godzilla, who Eventually dies a thousand deaths at the end. The three stars are for the cool sets and CGI. Even the normally excellent principle actors gave their worst performances. Who wrote and directed this mess?
Green Book (2018)
A revelation!
I am amazed what cinema magic can happen with a simple well written story and two gifted actors doing some of their best work. Add to that the challenging circumstances that was the south in that era and the transformation that can occur if the human spirit is willing. It was all I could do not to cry at the end. A moving experience.
Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World (2017)
Rumble delivers
I saw this film at the Sonoma film fest. There were probably 200 people in the audience and all sat in rapt attention. No one walked out and there was mad applause at the end. A beautiful music and Native American feel good story masterfully told.
