Doctor Sleep (2019)
It will not put you to sleep
...as the title suggests. Ewan McGregor excels in portraying a complex and damaged character, once a little boy, now a full grown man, beloved to all of us who have watched The shining. I wouldn't consider it a direct sequel, rather as something that stands on its own, while referencing the classic here and there. Rebecca Ferguson is captivating as a villain and a worthy adversary to all those who shine. I liked revisiting Overlook hotel, although it doesn't diminish Kubrick's unique vision and style.
Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
Double fun
Very funny and entertaining sequel, although I find the first one to be slightly more fun. It's as if a dynamic between this group of actors has significantly changed, which is evident while watching the film. Addition of characters, particularly a dumb blonde chick is what ultimately saves the entire story, in my opinion.
It Chapter Two (2019)
It maybe ends
I applaud direction, musical score throughout the film, while a screenplay could have been better. There is much inserted from a novel, but something regarding Pennywise is left unexplored, which perhaps is deliberately done, so that chapter three might happen. Actors who play grown-ups give amazing performances, especially James McAvoy and Bill Hader. They managed to show and make us believe in their connection starting from teen years onward. I loved cameo from Stephen King, who provided a very funny line with pun intended. I would recommend watching It 2 in theaters rather than at home.
The Kitchen (2019)
Hell's kitchen
I am not a New Yorker, so I'm not going to pretend that I know this particular time period in that city, but from what I've heard, it had been a hell of a place to live in. Crime was constantly present on those streets. A movie manages to capture that sense of dreadfulness, violence, resilience, whoever is the smartest ends up the last one standing. There is an underlying message regarding modern age and that #me too movement, all women power, which I didn't mind. I absolutely love costumography, scenography and cinematography in this film, showing us New York as it once had been in terms of not just clothes, but also that '70s vibe.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Once upon blah blah
Really? This is supposed to be a Quentin Tarantino picture? While I was watching it in a pretty full theatre, two couples walked out way before the famous ending. I don't know what went wrong here...there's not much going on, except for observing this endless struggle one of the main characters is going through, which after a while becomes tedious and unbearable to watch. When that ending finally starts to unfold, you can't help but wonder what could've been if the entire movie had been that good and intriguing. In spite of previously mentioned, the acting is superb. There is one suspenseful scene before the ending, that almost felt like watching a horror film all of a sudden, which I liked a lot. I understand that a lot of stuff is a nod or a homage to that golden age of Hollywood, however, I don't like how it is represented, especially a certain scene where real Bruce Lee is shown in an unflattering light, undeservingly so, which is perhaps done on purpose or not. Maybe it was supposed to have been ironic, but somehow that irony got lost on me. This film needs shorter run-time. Sometimes it's almost as if one's watching a documentary, minus the incredible ending.
Crawl (2019)
Enjoyable watch
...even though it's predictable and at times a cliche, but in a good way, so it doesn't ruin all the fun while watching characters trying to defeat, better yet, outsmart those gators. I like how a relationship between a father and his daughter unfolds throughout the story. Man vs nature is always an exciting premise and this movie doesn't fail in that sense.
Stockholm (2018)
Lacking a better script syndrome
I give it 6 because of three actors that excel in portraying flawed and imperfect characters. They are Ethan Hawke, Mark Strong and Noomi Rapace, respectively. This story suffers from a poorly developed script, ending is a bit unfocused and confusing, maybe on purpose, maybe not, but I don't believe that was how such situation really got resolved. See it for yourself.
Stranger Things (2016)
It grabs your attention from the get-go
Seasons 1&2 were great and without further ado let me tell you about season 3-it is out of this world. I won't reveal any of the plot, beacuse it would ruin everyone's viewing experience. I urge those who want to watch this season to stay away from any spoilers in any form. All actors are amazing, including the new ones. A story progresses to another level in such a clever and funny way. There are many pop cultural references throughout, which enhance the plot. This is the best season so far as it masterfully blends humor and terror, in spite of last two episodes being a hit and a miss. Jokes in those episodes seemed forced and unnecessary, despite having been written by the creators. I recall, while watching season 1&2, how much I cared for the characters and their well-being. Without beating around the bush the episodes were better written by far. To creators of this show, I say, bring back screenwriters from previous seasons and include other government produced children, seeing that Eleven is not a first number. Loose ends should be answered from season 3. Please, try not to be repetitive and/or redundant, also invest in character development, not just in visual effects, considering a wonderful cast of actors at your disposal.
Murder Mystery (2019)
Funny duo
Aniston and Sandler compliment each other nicely, also I enjoyed seeing french comedian Dany Boon in a small role. A film provides lots of laughs and what more could one ask for...
Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
Annabelle doesn't over welcome her stay
A film is well-written and directed. Young actors, especially Ed and Lorraine's daughter, immerse in their characters, awakening in a viewer a genuine concern for their well-being. In today's age and time it is quite a challenge to make a good horror movie, this one joins a club of such films, considering that it ticks all the right boxes when it comes to creating an appropriate atmosphere, music being used when needed. I wanted something to happen at some point and when it happened, I smiled thanking everyone involved that they hadn't left that out. It is creepy as it should be, with darkness being a key element, because we all know that most of our fears come from dark, being left on your own literally and metaphorically with no light around you. It is a fear deeply rooted in our childhoods, of which this horror film reminds its audience, making them face their own fears. Something is always lurking in the shadows. This one is the best sequel of them all. I didn't give it a ten, only because I wanted to see more of Ed and Lorraine, taking into account that real Lorraine died this year and more screen presence of her character would've been a decent send-off. Nonetheless, there is a scene at the end of the film that kind of pays an homage to her.
Anna (2019)
Anna loses herself/itself
I give it four stars only because of 1-2 great action sequences and Helen Mirren, who steals every scene she's in. Watch it if you like meaningless action films or movies that desperately want to be clever when they're everything but...
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)
Shockingly good
Zac Effron is disturbingly convincing as this notorious serial killer Ted Bundy. He completely embodies Bundy, especially with a menacing look in his eyes. Lilly Collins shines as a somewhat naive, with low self-esteem, single mother. What I like the most about this film is a chosen narrative, the way the story is presented. In a way it is told from an unsuspecting victim, his girlfriend, who later becomes his fiancee. Even though two women loved him, I don't believe he was capable of loving anyone but himself. The movie lacks showing explanation for his actions. Nevertheless, are we even capable of entering into the mind of any serial killer, let alone this one and truly understand those urges and impulses they seem to possess? I don't mind that those involved in making this movie chose not to show us all the gory details of his killings, but rather hint at it. After seeing a footage of real Ted Bundy at the end of the film, it is beyond me how any woman could have found him attractive, charming and appealing. While one stares at those dead like shark eyes, all one sees is the never-ending darkness.
The Hustle (2019)
You won't be conned...it's a comedy
...and it's really good! I was laughing so hard, that I almost teared up. Anne and Rebel have an amazing chemistry together, feeding off each other. One of the funniest movies so far this year, with very cleverly written dialogues. A welcomed breath of fresh air for this genre. To whom it may concern, please make a sequel for which I recommend bringing Melissa McCarthy and/or Kate McKinnon on board. Now that would become instant classic.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Tick-tack, Mr.Wick
I have mixed feelings about this third installment. What works in film's favour are breathtaking action sequences, especially a scene in a horse's stable and on a bridge (overpass) with Wick fighting off bikers. It is expertly directed and edited. John Wick is still as mean as ever. What doesn't work in film's favour is the following: nonexistent script or a poor attempt of a story and the fact that it doesn't end as a trilogy. There is a scene that I would've made differently, when Wick is in a desert looking for a way out, in that particular moment he would start hallucinating because of dehydration, be under illusion of seeing his dead wife Helen, looking gently at him and as soon as he'd reach his hand towards her, she'd disappear. When this film first came out, a sequel was obvious and expected. I have been looking forward to seeing this third chapter for a long time and now after watching it, I only hope for a better developed screenplay and characterisation in a fourth chapter. Until then tick-tack.
Long Shot (2019)
Really funny up-to-date romantic comedy
I can't recall the last time I laughed so much, watching a Hollywood produced romantic comedy. I am glad to see this genre is back with a twist, due to unlikely pairing of the leads. It's hilarious and even some muchly needed serious moments work well together. All acting is superb, chemistry between Rogen and Theron is through the roof. The funniest character in the entire film is the president, which is loosely and purposely based on the current U.S.president. There is a scene that's a sweet nod to a now classic Pretty woman, with Rogen being Julia Roberts and Theron being Richard Gere. Another nod to the same film is a song by sweddish duo Roxette 'It must have been love', which is very much present throughout the movie. There are many pop references to the '90s, including previously mentioned. I recommend watching it with as many girlfriends as possible. It would make for a fun night out at the movies.
Under the Silver Lake (2018)
WTF???!!!!!
Stay away from this atrocity of a film. If only I had. The only good thing about it is the music score throughout. If one closes one's eyes, it gives one an illusion of watching or better yet listening to a Hitchcock film. There are a few nods to the master himself, such as the opening scene, which is very reminiscent of his classic Rear window, then Vertigo although by a long shot, a blonde as the main character's obsession and a scene with a memorial site dedicated to him. Furthermore what's good is a quote: "I saw you spying on me earlier" and advice that one character gives to another, suggesting to buy a dog in order to get unconditional love, because it would do that person good. Technical details of the film are decently executed, for instance, directing, cinematography, but what ruins it is the incoherent plot masked as a script.
Green Book (2018)
Celebration of life, love and friendship
What a gem of a film...Both main actors shine throughout. It is such a simple, yet effective true story of an unexpected and also unimaginable friendship between two men, who come from different worlds and cultures. They learn so much from one another, being stuck together in a car, growing in the process. While I watched this movie, I remembered why I fell in love with movies, due to the fact that it managed to capture magic, for what we all go to cinemas in the first place.
Cold Pursuit (2019)
Solid entertainment
This film doesn't take itself seriously and that is refreshing. Liam Neeson has established himself as an action star, but it's nice to see him here in a slightly different role. The entire story is layered with a dark sense of humour that surprisingly works in film's favour, instead of decreasing its quality. There is one particularly memorable character, I'll give a hint...he likes staying at motels. Don't expect Taken and you'll love it.
Escape Room (2019)
Brains&wits
Very clever, keeps you guessing the whole time and it draws a viewer in, almost as if a member of an audience is one of the players, which I applaud. There are a few loose ends and a room left for a sequel (no pun intended). A story is no nonsense, simple and very well executed. I recommend it to horor fans and puzzle solving enthusiasts.
Hell Fest (2018)
Film surprises but not in a typical way
Movie is effective only because of its ending and that's about it, which is sad, seeing that the filmmakers obviously like horror genre. They tried to pay homage to certain slasher movies, comparison with Halloween is unavoidable, but it lacks viciousness and a touch of evil. As a viewer, I wanted to like and connect with the characters, but I wasn't given a chance to do so, because they were poorly represented, therefore leaving one wanting more character development. Surprisingly, the story is not rushed, although, it might seem it could be, taking into account everything previously mentioned. There is never enough sense of dread, which is imperative in horror, especially slasher horror. Ultimately, what saves and somewhat redeems the film is the clever, chill to the bone ending, which suggests a potential sequel, not to leave out a fantastic musical score, also some scenes are deliberately not over the top and that plays out perfectly. For something entitled Hell fest, I guess I expected more imagination in a certain part of the theme park. Still, I'd recommend watching it, if you've got nothing else to do.
Second Act (2018)
Solid night at the movies or at home but nothing more
Jenny proves that she still is from the block, although the movie lacks originality and depth, not to leave out a decent character development. Story had a lot of potential that was underused, which is a shame. I liked the on-screen friendship between Maya and Joan, founding it touching and believable. The ending is predictable and movie is too philosophical for its own good at times. Still, it's passable for a rainy Sunday afternoon, if there's nothing else to watch.
Widows (2018)
Beautiful
...everything...direction, script, cinematography, costume design, all of the actors...it glues you to your seat from start to finish. Characters face tough choices with an uncertain outcome. Viola Davis steals every scene, due to a powerful and brilliant performance. There is this particularly intense scene, masterfully directed, awakening in a viewer a sense of being right there, in the midst of a heist. It is a very emotionally driven movie, that has a smart plot, unlike many current films.
Halloween (2018)
A worthy sequel
I am one of those people who feel for the characters and empathize with them while watching a horror movie. I almost start yelling don't go in there, don't do that...Afterwards I find it silly but I can't help it. Horrors, the good ones, evoke fear, terror and a sense of dread. This one is no exception. Story is a no-nonsense, cutthroat (pun intended) and straightforward, culminating with a decent send off. Forget the in-between sequels. Jamie excels as she should. I love how this movie is done with so much respect and homage to the original. Music is the final, significant touch, resonating with the original score. It is one of the best ever composed for the screen, in my opinion. Many gruesome scenes are alleviated with few welcomed comical moments. It's morbidly fun to see that Michael Myers has still got a wicked sense of humour.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Full of emotions
Beautiful, starting from performances by all of the actors, directing, script, editing, cinematography...behind their music, which will live forever, there was a man looking for a place to call a home, a family of his own, acceptance, unconditional love, honesty, loyalty, escape from loneliness and don't we all look and search for this...only few of us are lucky enough to find it...I'm glad he had finally found it, even for a short period of time and sometimes it's all one needs. A movie also approached a touchy subject of homosexuality with sophistication and utmost respect. I am thrilled to see how much we have evolved as a society since those days. I couldn't stop crying while watching emotionally charged scenes and I love how nothing was over the top or cliched. The ending is as it should be, taking each viewer down the memory lane for those who had been there and for those who hadn't at the Live Aid, which performance is so masterfully recreated, one feels as a member of that audience right there on the Wembley stadium, clapping along while singing some of their biggest hits.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Mesmerizing experience
This rarely happens...after almost binge watching it, I am intrigued to read a novel, which inspired this tv show. Everything is superbly and masterfully done, starting with scenography, cinematography, directing, editing, visual effects and acting, especially child actors who gave wonderful, emotion filled performances. Jumping between past and present is seamlessly brilliant. I found myself craving for more of a background story regarding certain characters. I would've given it 10/10 if the ending had been stronger, with a more powerful and lasting impact. Nonetheless, immerse yourself into this experience and I promise you won't regret it.
