Superman & Lois (2021)
CW doesn't dissapoint
I left this show at S2E4. CW does what CW always does.
So much talking about feelings and about 2 minutes of Superman action per episode.
And always cliffhanger at the end of episode, that does not continue until end of next episode.
There is about 10 minutes of main story arc in 600 minutes of total runtime of one season. All the other content is teenage drama, as usual in CW production.
The Stand (2020)
Big complicated epic
The Stand is huge challenge to adapt and here makers have opted in to start from middle and introduce characters with flashbacks. The full series hasn't yet come out, but for now (E6) this is _very_ loyal to the books (apart from chronological order).
In a fact, it so loyal that it's bit boring if the book is fresh in your mind. There are minor changes here and there (probably for budget reasons and keeping runtime in the realm of sanity). But the big strokes are just as written, they are like visualizations from the book.
Judging from reviews this series, it is hard to follow to some. Maybe it is, if you havent read the book. For me hovever at episode 6 i'm really satisfied, it's like dream come true for King fan.
I just hope that serie-makers change up the ending from the book. It was really anticlimatic and nonsensical, so there I would like to see screenwriters take some creative liberty.
This series is been butchered with 1/10 reviews, it really isn't that bad. That's why I give this 10/10, but real score would be something like 7 or 8 at this point. I hope the finale is worthy of great book!
Archive (2020)
Boring low budget Black Mirror episode
I don't get why some reviewers are so moist if average movie has a twist ending. This movie screamed whole time "I HAVE TWIST, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO QUESS WHAT IT IS!".
I did except twist, I wasn't sure what it would be, but I had bad feeling that it would be "this was simulation"-klishe. And basically, it was just that.
CGI was very good, the base looked photoreal. But that wife-android was very 60's Star Treky. Just a wig and bodypaint. And version before GhostInTheShell ripoff animation was painfully obvious rubber suit.
It looked good when not moving and not focusing on eyes (eyelashes, what a weird detail to do before legs...). But when she moved, like dropping from cabined, rigid parts behaved like rubber suit. Very immersion breaking.
But biggest shame of this movie was making this feature length. It just didn't have substance for the runtime. Movie is filled with long takes of nothing and doing stuff that doesn't build plot or characters.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
So much better than previous one
Real score is 7/10 but this is just to countermeasure hatevotes.
This fixes almost all the problems that previous Rian Johnson version had. Characters have reasons, history and logic why they are like they are. Too bad that the previous movie echoes thru here, there is so much to fix and so little time to do it. New plotlines are super rushed, emperor just pops in at very first minutes (no spoiler here) and "spy"-subplot was nice touch to redeem one of best villains of first movie of new trilogy.
If this movie would have been split in episodes 8 & 9 this would have been perfect new trilogy for loved character. Now Rian (almost) managed to destroy whole trilogy with one really really bad nonsense-plotbreaking.
This movie was not without plotholes tho. The only one that really bothered me was "you can't tell which way is up, hence the mandatory one weak point". How ever, there was things like gravity because ships fell to the ground. Are you really telling me that scifi-spaceships cannot tell witch way is up, when there is clearly ground below and gravity is pulling towards it? Go outside, drop a rock and go opposite direction than that rock! :D
But minor logical errors aside this was nice ending for new trilogy, just don't let Rian ruin any more our nice things, please.
Joker (2019)
Breathtaking
Flawless performances, music, camerawork and script. Just full ten from me. Plot was simple, it focuses on the Arthur. Hes life and mental state. Everything else is just static around him, meaningless. If you pay close attention, you can see how surrounding world changes with Arthur's own life. True masterpiece.
Ad Astra (2019)
Briliant
If you are looking for fast paced scifi actuon, this is not for you. Movie depends heavily on mood, feel and emotion building. So not a typical popcorn space fantasy.
But this just was jaw droppingly beautiful movie, if you just can ignore the fact that this is not documentary. Science and physics do work pretty well, but with some things science is thrown out for sake of drama.
So if you are huge nerd or huge jock, maybe just pass on this.
Vice (2018)
Just perfect
All has been said here by others nothing to add to that. Those who are giving <5 stars because movie mocks conservatives, just watch end credits and get over your hurt feelings.
It Chapter Two (2019)
Almost perfect
What a great movie and combined with chapter 1 easily the best King supernatural horror adaptation. It was long movie and that is good thing. There is just so much to see. Scary part after scary part can become bit overwhelming at times, but viewer must understand that IT feeds more from fear than flesh.
IT is bittersweet movie that probably needs similar small town childhood memories to really work. If you cannot enjoy memories of those never ending summer days with your long lost childhood friends, this is maybe not for you.
Effects and CGI is just perfect, only minor hickups here and there, like too much face distortions and "in your face" pseudo 3D.
Only real problem was with humor. It was too funny at times and one scene particular was just so cringy attempt of being funny (the vomit scene). At times it really destroyed all the serious tones and i was left wondering if filmmakers just totally jumped to the comedy-horror genre (Scary Movie style).
But they made up for stupid audiovisual comedy mistakes at the end and i just really enjoyed this movie.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
Dumb but fun
Well, this is my first FF movie that i have ever seen. 9+ reviews here are far off, unless you are one of "those people". But film was entertaining, way too long and some of the scenes were just too silly. Like army of bad guys just waiting for a sake of script and every female is a supermodel.
Dumb but fun action flick, nothing special.
Nightflyers (2018)
Rushed end
Many of the reviewers here does not seem to undestand that the aliens were affecting minds of the crew. That is why closer they got to the aliens, even crazier the crew got.
But it clearly shows that SyFy yet again decided to pull the plug midway and showrunners had to jam some kind of ending with minimal time and budget. That is why ending is rushed and things happen too fast. This could have been great show, but now it is just another example how merciless SyFy is with shows. It doesn't matter if story will be told or not. Not enough viewers, they pull the trigger.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Fun, standard Marvel action comedy
First of all, sorry about 10/10 review. It's just a countermeasure for this "angy men"-spamming of 1/10. My real score would be 7/10.
This movie is just great action comedy that we come to except from Disney. I have hoped for darker themes for a long time in Disney Marvel, so in that aspect this is little disappointing. But anyhow very entertaining solid fun action film. AND for the first time this movie makes totally believable CGI-humans. Uncanny valley is far over and execution is just flawless, cannot tell any difference to actual human face.
I have nothing bad to say about Brie Larson, very charming combination of silly girl mannerism and soldier stoicism. She clearly grows as a character towards the end. Some of the jokes are super gringy tho, but it is not Larsons fault. Disney Marvel seems not to be capable of keeping straight face in any of fighting scenes, every single action scene must have something silly.
And that is my main complaint about this film (and generally to the whole DisneyMarvel-franchise). Please, take something seriously. If you are fighting for lives of innocent children, please don't cram some silly "Nerf"-jokes in it.
Upgrade (2018)
Absolute gem
I didn't even know this was a "budget" movie, learned that from IMDB afterwards.
This was excellent and basically flawless sci-fi action thriller, that was totally believable. Even the starting point "CSI-style" photo-enlargements, that were little annoyingly unbelievable, was explained if you follow the plot thru.
Fighting scenes were totally unique and brilliantly done. There is long time when any movie made this kind of impact for me. I just had to watch every hand-to-hand scene again just to admire the cinematography and choreography.
And the plot, I will not spoil it, but I have to say I was surprised how unpredictable it was. And execution was just beautiful!
Solid 10/10 from me.
Bird Box (2018)
Great movie
Just a honestly a good movie, ignore the (probably young) critics that wants everything super easy and extra explained. Great cast, great acting and tension was real. Part of me would have liked more explanation, but bigger part of me did know it would spoil the mystery. Almost everything felt realistic, like why stealth was way more effective than direct assault (but lets keep this spoiler free).
There literally was not much to complain and children were realistic and i cried at the end
This Is the End (2013)
Best movie that humanity has made
Incredibly funny, if you like bad humor. If you are the type who ejoys only bittersweet frech comedies, that makes you cry with happiness, this definitely is not for you. If you like gigantic severed satan dicks, then you probably are in for a treat.
Aquaman (2018)
Well done comic adaptation
Visually just stunning piece of art, sure it's CGI heavy but what did you expect from a superhero movie that is based in underwater Atlantis? Practical effects?
Plot was long and is expertly paced. The very last 30 minutes are little crammed with lots of BIG things happening, but i'm glad they did give space for characters to grow and bond. The whole "treasure hunt" was really nice little subplot that made everyone more relatable.
Costumes are just amazing, they are almost exact duplicates from comics and they do not look silly at all! How they did it!? Maybe it's the environment that makes them blend in and seem "realistic".
Some single shots are little cringe worthy, like those that emphasizes how badass Jason Momoa is. Little less of that would have worked better.
Generally speaking this is a great movie. However I was little overwhelmed how much spectacle this movie had and the ending was too crammed with amazing action and visuals. That is why i give this 8/10 instead 9/10.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
So very very boring movie
How can movie with so many action scenes be this boring? For the last hour i just prayed "please be over". Everything is so predictable and action scenes just follows another. First half is OK, there is real tension but then non-stop action just goes way over the top. Haven't film makers heard that orgasm is nice, but when it lasts for two hours, everyone is just waiting it to end?
I just feel like i watched two hours of non-stop dinosaur fighting for some reason.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Really beautiful semi-realistic fairytale
Yes, movie contains minor LGBT elements, and that is why all the 1/10 spammers, because internet is nowdays full of butthurt alt-righters. But lets ignore politics in this review:
Everything just fits perfectly in this movie, cinematography is just beatiful and story is Del Toro-style blend of realism and fantasy. Highly recommended for mature audiences, that have mindset for great but gritty fantasy romance
Extinction (2018)
Just bad
Everyone here is so exited about "the twist". I saw it coming miles ahead, not robots, but something was clearly coming because the visions and the "weird doctor appointment" .
So it was pretty lame, that they were robots. This was like long, badly made and watered down episode of Black Mirror.
And the horrible CGI and B-class alien-rubbersuits were just laughable. You can clearly see how the "mars-suits" were just made from ducktape, pipes and other items from general store. And why in gods name would humans in mars develop rubber frog-suits for military invasion? It would be so much plausible with modern looking battle armors or something.
No, the suits were made to look alien-frogs because of the plot. They had to look like aliens for audience, to make "the twist" workable. Common sense just flew out of the window.
And they clearly did not have budget to pull of the underlying plot anyhow. The war between humans and robots were just couple of shots in the same city as the rest of the movie. And what, the robots just won and humans flew to mars? Humans had the military and element of surprise and few janitors just stole guns and killed all humans?
Well, maybe there was some huge epic battles with robot-armies and drones, but this movie just did not tell that story at all. Robots just had normal clothes and couple of guns, and they won the entire planet full of humans. End of story.
And why the mind wipe? Again, just one stupid thing to make "the twist" workable. Super advanced robots that killed all the humans just want to forget the bad things? That is just idiotic! Even from strategic viewpoint that is stupid, only selected few would be preparing the retaliation of humans.
But it is even more idiotic because it would take unbelievable amount of cover up to make those false memories stick. The bad dreams would be the least of the problems.
What about medical care? What about if someone gets in to accident and sees just glowing insides? What about food, drinking and feces? How about that those kids have been kids for 50 years?
They would have to do mind re-wipes billions of robots every day and there would have to be unbelievable amount of censoring. Because clearly there was noting preventing robots to see the truth after seeing some robot-insides spilled.
And why? Because robots would not feel bad? They must be better options than mind wipe for that. Like "decrease bad emotions"-slider in the robot control app.
Cloak & Dagger (2018)
Boring as hell
It would be cool, if IMDB had some age statistics of reviewers. It would be easier to find good shows for particular ages. 12 years old appreciates a lot different things than 40 years old.
But this show is so boring, i had to fast forward and that is the first time i have _ever_ done that. I just had to check, if anything happens in this show, i have no time to invest 10 hours for 10 minutes of plot advanses.
And now i'm on the 5 episode and still nothing. Yes, at the end of each episode something happens, they uses powers to keep viewers interested of the next episode. Pattern is pretty clear. Just sooooo much talking, because it is cheap to make actors talk in same sets over and over again.
Maybe i just wait for all episodes to come and watch only the last one, where they probably use their powers and plot advances to keep viewers for second season.
Timeless: Chinatown (2018)
Conclusion of soapy season
On the whole, it seems that Timeless have had serious budget cutbacks this season. There was only one really wide angle shot in this seasons (first episode) all other episodes have been using really tightly boxed in shots and recycled, cheap sets.
Maybe this is also reason why story involved a lot of soap opera type love interest drama. It's cheaper to chat about feelings than make interesting time traveling.
I almost gave up on the show in about middle of the season, but endured to the end. Not a great show or "a masterpiece" like reviews here are calling it, but mediocre scifi, with a lot of plot armour with characters. Like it seems to impossible to shoot Emma over 2 meter distance ( even by trained soldier).
And those plot holes! Jeez! For instance, why did they reveal every sleeper agent by travelling mothership right when they activated them? Why not go back 5 years and give sleepers orders to assassinate someone years later? It would be impossible to track down sleepers and stop them.
I just cannot get over with why Rittenhouse was so stupid in this season. They would had million ways to destroy Lucy and Wyatt and everyone.
This series needs a lot more clever writing than this.
Suburbicon (2017)
Seriously underrated film
To be clear, this movie on itself is 7/10, but because onslaught of unfair 1/10 reviews i give this movie 10.
In absolutely no way, this movie deserves so low score that it has. There was serious pacing errors and whole "black-neighbors" -subplot was pretty unnecessary. Especially first half of the movie is really slow and viewer has difficult to get focus on the main characters.
But when things get moving, there is good Cohen-type action and flow to the events. Overall this movie was beautifully 50's style dark "comedy", even if there was nothing funny about it.
Timeless: The War to End All Wars (2018)
Great start, just one really stupid scene.
Great start for the show, i especially liked how committed Lucy were to destroy Rittenhouse. I was sure that she would not shoot the innocent man and there would have been some cliche "i cannot do it"-moment, but no! Awesome and bold move from the writers, hats off for that.
But then the writers totally dropped the ball at the end. Wyatt surprised Lucy and Rittenhouse members from behind and let the situation to escalate to typical "Mexican Standoff". That made no sense at all and as result the "Important Rittenhouse"-member and the timemachine is AGAIN in the hands of bad guys!
Whole situation could have been solved by Wyatt with shooting all Rittenhouse members down from behind. Sure, the whole series would have been over and Rittenhouse would have been gone, but writers could have come up with better solution. For example Wyatt and Rufus could have been first at timemachine so Rittenhouse would have surprised them.
The Mist (2017)
Boring and just so bad
I do not give 1/10 lightly, i forced myself watch 5 episodes of this horrible show, but i cannot take it anymore. Fifth episode decides to use screen time for flashbacks of some family drama of the "main characters". And they just talk and talk and talk...
The spoiler is: nothing happens, in 5 episodes there is 3 deaths by The Mist for some side characters that means nothing. This show does not build up any mystery of The Mist or even hint for some sort explanation for anything. In the 5 hour run time The Mist gets screen time for about 15 minutes, everything else is just talking and some horribly made teen drama about date-raping and discoveries of homosexuality.
I taught Under the Dome was the low point of Stephen King filmation's, but this takes the cake. Do not waste your time on earth with this trash.
Death Note (2017)
Interesting and different movie
This movie demonstrates how biased and vengeful IMDb reviews have become. If movie originates from some cult-fan-based origin, it is guaranteed that it will not get fair reviews.
I was tempted to give 10/10 in spite of those horde of totally unfair 1/10 reviews made by fans of Japanese manga. But i choose to give it 8/10 that in my opinion is fair score to this movie, although little too high.
I have not seen original manga and because of that, i found this movie interesting and original, there just is not anything like this in American movies.
I was little disappointed how little the book were used and deaths showed. The general idea of the "death note" could be used far more and there could have been less teen-drama.
Passengers (2016)
Nice love story in space
Visually just stunning and good acting, but the content of the story was pretty standard romance-story: Guy does something wrong, lies about it to the girl, they fall in love, girl finds out the lie, they split up but come together in the final moments of the film.
If this story was not on the spaceship, it would be same crap that you see in every romantic movie. But they are on spaceship that is dying and that environment rises this movie from 4 to 7.
But overall the cliché counter is very high on this. A lot of last minute saves and coincidences.
