SAD THAT WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ENJOY THIS
23 December 2023
I really enjoyed this movie because I didn't go into it with any expectations or previews. I just went in open minded and ended up liking all the characters and the story. Yeah the setting and the themes are reminiscent of Star-Wars, but Zack executed it in a new way.

I really hope that Netflix gets the outcome that they expect out of this so they can make more than just two parts. I am looking forward to the second part. Key take aspects that made me like this movie were the characters, setting, Visuals, and the story...

A lot of people are just following their circles and are afraid of being ridiculed for enjoying this film. If you go into it open minded you will enjoy it, but if you are a Star-Wars fanboy you may not like it.

Too Americanised for the International Market
29 November 2023
The show looks great the sets are amazing, and my favourite game was Battle Ship. However, I feel like the personalities and the characters are too Americanised and have an overtly American World View. There's a lot of emphasis on being Alpha, Strategic, Leader, Taking Over, etc..

The original Squid Games series placed emphasis on the desparation to win the money and the hopeless situations that the Characters have in the outside World. The reality show places a lot of emphasis on personalities, which all have mundane and run of the mill back stories any way.

This would probably do well in the United States, but it would not become the international phenomenon that the show was. It didn't even make it to number 1 in my country.

Technically Excellent
21 July 2023
This was one of the most anticipated films of the year. Because everyone misses Cinema, and great film making. We all know that Christopher Nolan never makes a bad movie, but we still wanted to know how he would tell a story that most people know his way.

The film was brilliant technically, the camera work, production design, sound everything technical just worked. And what impressed the most was shooting scenes in Black&White instead of doing it in post, and it looked fantastic.

The acting was absolutely amazing, if Cillian Murphy or RDJ do not win or at least get nominated during award season I would lose faith in the Academy Awards. The rest of the supporting cast was brilliant and in tune with their characters.

The story was documentary style drama, with Nolan's typical convoluted time jumps. It was hard to follow in some parts, you really needed to keep up the entire run time. It might be off-putting for people that are not familiar with Nolan's work.

The Sound was also loud again, and the dialog was on the low end. I got to like it now that he has explained why he arranges his sound in that manner. And the scoring was just perfect, I never pay attention to the Sound but in this one I did because it literally blasts you.

This was a great film, but like any other Nolan film it requires a second viewing. I would highly recommend that you see it in an IMAX Cinema/Theatre.

Bad Lead Actor and CGI
15 July 2023
This movie could have been decent if they change two things, the lead actors and the CGI. I am not sure how the CGI managed to look worse than the first Transformers which came out over a decade ago. They chose the wrong person to be the lead for this movie, no charm, no lead character qualities, nothing specials about him, just a guy acting.. Dominique could have been the lead, she was much more likeable than Anthony. I also didn't like the fact that the scale of the movie was really small, you could tell that there was a lot of budget cuts and they selected locations that were easy to film in without breaking the bank. The movie was not all bad, the Transformers voice acting was great as always and the existential threat was fantastic...the only issue was the lead actors and the visuals. If those were okay I would have given it a 6.

Millennial Parents Will enjoy this with their kids
10 April 2023
If you're a millennial, especially old millennial born between 82 and 89, your kids are probably around pre-teen or younger. This movie will be perfect family entertainment. The visuals were vivid and absolutely stunning. The voice acting was fantastic, the jokes landed and made the kids happy. It was a wonderful experience.

They made references to my generation's Mario, and the Mario that my kid is familiar with. And they did it in a Nintendo way, not in a money grabbing Hollywood way.

The story was also adorable, and even though it's obviously targeted at a younger audience, adults will not be bored at all. I enjoyed the movie, my daughter loved it, this is a win for Nintendo.

I am so happy that this movie felt like a Nintendo product and less a Hollywood product, even though it was produced and published by Hollywood. I am pleased that they remained true to the ethos of the source material.

NOT TOO BAD, BUT LOST THE CHARM
8 April 2023
This movie like the first one, has cool characters that one grows to like. They had such a great cast, I am not sure why this movie struggled to hit the right spots. But then I remembered that the era of Superhero movies is coming to an end, and the guys in charge of the DC Universe are aware of that. As a result, they are throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks. This leaves us an the audience wondering why they keep changing the working formula so much. They did this with Wonder Woman, and now Shazam. Both sequels were a massive let down relative to their first instalment.

Shazam was not too bad though, but they should have kept a similar tone as the previous one. This movie is still entertaining, I would have forgiven it if the story was as emotionally compelling as the original one.

The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Season 1, Episode 3
10/10
Excellent Writing
31 January 2023
This was the best episode for me thus far, the build up to it was awesome. The two new characters were so captivating and so likeable with so much at stake for both of them. They were both grounded in the reality of the world that they exist in. The introduction of their story from beginning to end was unpredictable and full of mystery, but it had a fantastic pay-off. The performances were just spectacular and this episode was such a well crafted deviation from an otherwise dark and completely broken down world. I am so glad that even though there are a lot of trolls reviewing movies on IMDB, the consensus will always favour technical and creative excellence. If this is going to be the level of writing and directing, I am looking forward to more.

The Movie is Good, but not as good as I though it would be
22 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen the reviews and hype train regarding this movie. It's rare for a movie to be rated over 8 on IMDB and not be a masterpiece. However, this movie felt okay for me not as mind-blowing as everyone claims it to be.

However I need to give credit where it's due, as much as the plot was just okay for me. The rest of the departments were excellent, the acting, cinematography, postproduction etc. The characters were likeable and well performed, and the story arc for each sort of made sense.

The only plot issue I had with the movie was that there was not over-arching existential threat. The fact that the daughter was the "Villain" made it hard for me to feel the impending doom. I will give it a second viewing, but for now it was just okay for me.

Postponed the games
17 January 2023
I had postponed playing the games all these years, I was planning to play them this year. But when I heard that the series is coming out, I figured I may kill two birds with one stone. I am a gamer and yet still new to this story, I am so happy that they are sticking close to the source material. The performances were absolutely amazing, I could feel the ethos all around that the world is going through an apocalyptic event. The stakes are permanently high and I am looking forward to the next episode. This was a brilliant way to open a series. I have been let down by so many game to "live action" adaptations. I am glad that this show didn't let the fans down, and at the same time allowed the people that are new to the story to also enjoy it.

Technical and Visual Masterpiece
16 December 2022
We have never seen this level of technical excellence in any movie before. Maybe Alita Battle Angel, and Thanos, and this movie surpasses both. It was as jaw dropping as the first movie and just as immersive.

I spend the whole movie wondering, how on earth this was made. Surely they had to invent a lot of technology to get the Skin right, the water, and the animation.

The visuals were so breath taking that sometimes you forget the main story and just get sucked into pandora and they Navi' way of life.

They have set up the sequel well without forcing it into this instalment. In Conclusion I would recommend that you watch this movie in IMAX 3D or as a minimum at the Cinema/Theatre. It was worth it.

My rating is for the Cinematography, the story was like sticking a banana on the wall and calling it art.
31 August 2022
I went into this movie thinking that I am going to get something similar to Get Out or at least US. But this movie even though it was not boring to watch ended up becoming goofy towards the end. Seems like Peele was making this for his artistic friends with all the symbolism and meanings. He missed the regular audience that grew to like his weird film making style. We don't want another Get Out, but we want another Jordan Peele movie. In this movie his artistic/creative arrogance is starting to show. Too much Spielberg vibes, without the Spielberg magic. Jordan Peele needs to learn from Tarentino, Nolan, and others who started like him on how to evolve your writing as your budget gets bigger without losing a fanbase.

Old School Action
15 August 2022
I watched the first episode with my wife and she said it looks like a shooter game, Call of Duty vibes. That's when I knew we are in for a treat. I enjoyed the story and the way the plot unfolded. No unnecessary twists, and surprises. The only issue I had was the pacing, they could have sped it up a bit to increase the stakes. But I highly recommend this show.

Excellent Writing and Perfect Pacing
19 June 2022
I am not sure who wrote season 4, but it had the best story telling in the entire series. The characters were smart and interesting, the plot was unpredictable, the pacing was perfect, and there were multiple highstakes events all happening at the same time..I really enjoyed this season.

I expected Michael Bay, I was given Michael Bay.
24 April 2022
This movie gave me everything that I expected from a Michael Bay Movie. Lens flairs, explosions, car chases, over the top plot and unrealistic scenarios. I really enjoyed it. It gave me mid-2000s block buster vibes.

I don't like to give negative reviews, but I have to be honest
5 April 2022
I am not sure what type of movie they were trying to make, but it didn't work at all. The acting was subpar, and I blame the director because the cast was talented. The dialog was the worst part of this movie, and all the Elon and SpaceX references were terrible. Nothing that people said made sense in the context of the ridiculous plot.

I could almost forgive everything wrong with this movie and chuck it into my guilty pleasure category. The same category as 2012, The day after tomorrow, etc. But this movie falls short in comparison with those movies because the VFX in this movie was atrocious. It was hard to look at some of those video game looking buildings, cars and ever entire scenes.

Every VFX shot on the moon was decent, but all earth based VFX were terrible. I still don't understand where the $150 million budget was spent on, because this movie looks super cheap.

I was optimistic going into it, I hadn't seen the internet reviews before hand, and I am glad I didn't. If you don't notice things such as VFX in movies, you may actually like this movie. Otherwise, you are most likely not going to enjoy it.

New Ideas, New and Interesting Characters, but the film as a whole didn't work.
22 December 2021
When watching this film, you can see that it has some fantastic ideas. New, Fresh and interesting characters, I really like some of the new characters in this film. Great performances and chemistry by Keanu, Carrie-Anne even though I felt that their teen/young-adult type romance made no sense given their age.

The main problem I had with this film is the way everything was executed. All those great ideas and experimental concepts didn't work out at all. I sat through the film waiting for the wow and awe moment that is synonymous with Matrix films and I got nothing.

I am not completely disappointed, my rating is an expression of how I felt about the movie.

Good old fun superhero movie
18 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was so much fun to watch at the cinema. Everyone was screaming and cheering for their favourite heros and villains. I had such an amazing feeling watching this.

The moment they brought out the other "Peter Parkers" brought so much joy and excitement to everyone. That was one of the best moments I've experienced in a cinema.

The reviews for once are consistent with the actual movie. It's hard to hate this movie if you have a beating heart.

Deus Ex Machina
8 December 2021
This entire show is one Giant Deus Ex Machina. Movies and TV Shows like to undermine audience with the most outrageous Deus Ex Machina implementations. But I really enjoyed they way that plot device was used in this show. I really enjoyed this, I haven't watched anything this intense since Prison Break. It was worth my time.

Great Characters, Great Story
21 November 2021
I am glad I watched this show before checking the reviews. I really like the characters in this series, I also like the world where these events are taking place. The characters make the world relatable, the performances were also great. The only thing I have a problem with is the pacing, they need to crank up that pace just a little bit.

This movie was almost there
19 November 2021
The movie was not bad, the story was also compelling. The VFX looked great, especially the Celestial. The movie was very dark for some reason, it was hard to concentrate or be drawn into the story sometimes because of that lighting choice. Some of the characters made a lot of questionable choices, I am not sure what the writers were thinking. This made some characters not likeable at all. Also it must have been tough for the director to make choices in the cutting room because there were too many arcs and not all of them could be realised. I think if they give the same director a chance with the second one, she'll sort some of the issues out. All in All, it was not a bad movie, and it is indeed the worst in the MCU.

This just worked
19 November 2021
As a South African, I connected with this story at so many layers. As a young person, as a married person, as a person from the Township, as a person living in a city. The drama and story arcs for each character were hyper realistic in a South African context. The cast was also perfect for the roles, no one felt offish. I highly recommend it. I hope they used the same writers and directors for the follow-up.

Visually Stunning Movie

Every Frame in this movie was a piece of art. It was visually stunning, and the story and the characters were so incredible. This is what Cinema is all about, too bad most people won't get to see it at the Cinema.

I never thought movies like this would work anymore
23 September 2021
We are inundated with realistic plots and overly pessimistic and politically correct movies. This was one breath of fresh air. The movie is self-aware, I liked how ridiculous the bad guy was. Everyone was goofy and yet so relatable. I was interested from the beginning to the end. If you are a gamer of any form, this movie has tons of shameless easter eggs. Go see it, enjoy it.

Excellent Movie
26 August 2021
This movie was fantastic, I was constantly trying to figure out where they were going with it. The performances were fantastic, all the characters were likeable and convincing. I loved the story and the high-stakes convoluted story from a very simple premise. Highly recommended.

I usually know within the first 10 minutes if the movie is good or bad.
13 August 2021
This movie was not for John David Washington, they should have cast someone else. The acting was generally really bad, I felt nothing for the characters and I also didn't connect with the story. The Characters who are seemingly "in-love" had no chemistry between them. The camera work and editing were the biggest let down, some of the shots were out of focus....not artistically out of focus, like incompetent DP out of focus. Editing department should have cut those out. Some scenes were shot like it was a low budget student film. This movie was hard to watch because the overall quality was really poor.
