Don't Look Up (2021)
Totally Unfunny
What have I just watched? I love all the actors and characters (hence the 4* rating) but it was total cringe from start to finish. I kept hoping it would improve, maybe I was missing something but it was basically just an embarrassing spoof. Proof that a stellar cast does not guarantee a good movie.
Badehotellet (2013)
What an absolute joy
A series has to be fantastic for me to watch with subtitles. This is a wonderful example. Fabulous scenery, wardrobe, characters and acting and story all come together to make this a feast for the eyes and ears. Brilliant.
Green Street (2005)
Accents all over the place
I stuck it out but spent most of the time cringing. Only the rival gang leader had a proper cockney accent. The whole story was quite ridiculous really, just gratuitous. Elija Wood was the saving grace.
Await Further Instructions (2018)
Good old school style sci-fi horror
Yeah it's a bit ridiculous but actually really enjoyable and intriguing. Especially with lockdown, it all seemed a possibility at the start lol. Give it a go.
The Balloon Goes Up (1942)
Silly and utterly gorgeous
Happening upon an oldie like this, thanks to Talking Pictures TV channel, is just fabulous. Funny, silly and endearing, these films are as much a history lesson as a comedy. Nostalgic, entertaining and fun. I loved it.
We'll Take Manhattan (2012)
Could've been so much better
I enjoyed the movie despite it's foibles hence the rating, but apart from Karen Gillan as Jean Shrimpton who was fabulous, the acting was pretty poor. Bailey's over the top Cockney accent was excruciating and Francis Barber seemed to keep forgetting her posh accent. Putting that aside the story (true in part), scenery and costumes were lovely. The best bit was seeing shots of the original photographs at the end. Although it didn't exactly pay homage to him, David Bailey certainly was an amazing talent.
Before the Dawn (2019)
Zero chemistry
Dreadful acting, predictable storyline and absolutely no chemistry between these two whatsoever. Don't bother.
Dreamgirls (2006)
Not for me
You've got to like this kind of music to enjoy this film and I don't. I watched it because I love musicals and it has a fine cast. Fabulous wardrobe and a decent story albeit predictable but Jennifer Hudson is a better actress than a singer. All that waling is torture. Eddie Murphy excelled.
Hamilton (2020)
Outstanding performances, a real surprise
I didn't know anything about this musical other than I'd seen billboards in London's West End and wondered what it was all about. Now I know! It is an amazing production so very cleverly done. It brings history to life and makes it interesting and appealing to a younger audience which I greatly applaud. However, I can't help but think this is the American attempt at their version of Les Mis. I'll forgive them for that, nothing comes close to Les Mis but it's certainly a story to behold told in the most fabulous way. I couldn't get it out of my head and that speaks volumes so I set to researching Hamilton and his family afterwards. What a remarkable man he was. I would have given 10/10 had it not tried, in vain, to trump Les Mis. Don't even try.
Strangeways Here We Come (2018)
I really enjoyed this
Yes its daft, its a comedy after all, but its funny with great characters. I'm not sure why it's got such bad ratings. Enjoyable British comedy for fans of Shameless. Give it a go.
Devs (2020)
Utter tosh
I stuck it out, wish I hadn't bothered. So slow, it didn't get going until episode 4 and then it quickly went back downhill. Don't bother.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
What a pleasant surprise
I can't stand Eurovision so watched based on reviews. McAdams is exceptional in her role and the whole film and story are such fun, entertaining and endearing. Brosnan is so bad he's good but boy does he age well. Definitely worth a watch when you need a good chuckle.
The Twilight Zone (2019)
Brilliant series
There was always going to be some episodes better than others but all were enjoyable and it compares to the original series which I watched terrified as a child. Well worth a watch.
The Only Living Boy in New York (2017)
Never really gets going
Some fine actors in this so although the synopsis didn't thrill me I thought I'd give it a go. I liked the characters but nothing really gelled and it lacked emotion. Jeff Bridges was the star.
Steve Jobs (2015)
Like watching a 2 hour argument
Absolute torture to watch this movie saved only by Seth Rogan's performance. I now have a headache.
Bad Education (2019)
Really enjoyed this film
I've no idea why it's billed as drama/comedy. I don't think there is anything remotely funny about it. Well worth a watch though. Terrific performances.
The Harry Hill Movie (2013)
So silly but hilarious
You definitely need to be a Harry Hill fan to enjoy this but it's full of the silliest, funniest moments. Classic caper that me proper laughing out loud. Julie Walters face cracked me up. Brilliant.
Unorthodox (2020)
One of the finest pieces of film I've ever seen
You know when something is really special when you think about it a lot afterwards. The acting, cinematography and costume were nothing short of incredible. Such an eye opener and breathtaking. Definitely watch the 'making of' follow up. This will win awards.
