Eh...
19 January 2017
I'm a lifelong Germs fan. I loved the biography on Darby and was very excited to see this film. If you're a fan of the band, it is kind of cool to see them on screen doing their thing (not much video exists of the band so I'm used to articles and pictures). But overall, I did not enjoy it.

Unlike Sid and Nancy there are no memorable scenes and the film does not use music well. I challenge you to watch this and years later recall a scene as vividly as the "walking through the glass" scene in Sid and Nancy. Darby's inner struggles could have been explored in a fascinating way. They were not. This is just a basic run down of what the band looked like and where they hung out. I can't see any reason why anyone who isn't a huge Germs fan might enjoy this film. At the end a poem is read which Darby had written as a young teenager, but the actor messes up Darby's words. Appropriate.

The Den (2013)

A Dark but Repetitive Journey
28 December 2014
There has been a recent string of "mostly or all" web-cam shot horror films. Meghan is Missing is a typical example: have a character start off in chat rooms that are silly, have them meet someone that seems sinister, have them debate whether or not this is a joke as the film turns darker and darker.

The Den follows the typical pattern; if you're a fan of those films, this one is fairly well made. Unfortunately it offers nothing new. If you're familiar with the genre, once you see something dark happening on that web-cam, you know what the whole film is going to be like and how it is going to end.

The film is not realistic in any fashion as the killer(s) would have to be omniscient to know where everyone would be, when everyone would be alone, how people would be walking in to rooms and where they would be facing, etc. Not to mention the fact that the police offer no help when bodies pile up and our hero insists "no matter how many of my friends get kidnapped, I will not stop constantly broadcasting my whereabouts all over the web." It wasn't for me but I'm sure there are fans of web-cam scare films that will enjoy it.

Eh...
18 February 2012
A group of girls (who look like they're from the adult film world) gather in a house to decorate it for halloween, and watch "The Killer Eye." There's a crystal ball that has powers, and their Killer Eye doll gets possessed and eventually turns on them.

As this film features the girls watching the first Killer Eye movie, there are frequent flashbacks to that film (maybe too frequent- at times it can be confusing which movie we're watching). The girls personalities aren't developed (except for the fact that one of them apparently likes girls). There are opportunities for humor (such as when the girls watch the movie and make jokes about it) but they're not as funny as you'd hope, given some of Full Moon's other efforts.

There's plenty of nudity and not as much suspense or horror as you might hope for. Killjoy 3 is a much better recent Full Moon release.

Killjoy 3 (2010 Video)
Decent
21 October 2011
Killjoy 3 is a worthwhile view if you're a fan of clown-related horror films. Killjoy is wacky, uses a lot of tricks and has many one liners, similar to Freddy Krueger at his silliest. There are also 3 other bad clowns that are pretty fun, too. However, all this wackiness among the characters makes very little of the film scary. It will remind you greatly of the Joker from Batman joking around with his goons.

The "normal" characters are pretty boring, though, as are most scenes that don't take place in the clown world. The film starts to get dumb at the end when the characters try to defeat Killjoy... though the final scene is a nice touch. Not as great as It or Killer Klowns from Outer Space, but satisfying.

A step down for Leatherface
18 February 2011
The first TCM was classic. The second was completely different in style, but had its craziness and gore. This one feels like a watered down version of the first film. Some decent scenes, with Leatherface stalking people in the woods with his chainsaw. But then it takes an "action hero" turn, and feels too much like a standard Hollywood film.

Leatherface loses his scariness pretty quickly when you see him playing with kids toys and whining to his mom. Original TCM director Tobe Hooper had nothing to do with this film and thats a shame, not everyone can handle making Leatherface scary and intimidating. Worth a watch if you really love the first two films and don't mind a movie that's not quite as good.

Not as good as you'd want it to be
22 April 2010
The material here (covered in a similarly named documentary) is fascinating. The 90s New York club kid scene was a distinctive period with many crazy sights and scenes. Unfortunately, this film is poorly made on just about every level.

Most of the acting is not just bad, but some of the worst you'll ever see in a mainstream film. This is exacerbated by poor directing. The dramatic scenes don't feel dramatic (I yawned as one character nearly died). The costumes are very good, about on par with the actual club kids. So the film looks good at least.

Another issue: they changed so much for this movie from the actual story! If you research the actual murder and such after watching this you'll just be confused as to why they made all those arbitrary changes. I certainly wasn't to make a great film. Many people like this film, but I suspect deep down they want to live in the 90s club kid scene, and aren't objectively judging the film for its merits.

Wesley Willis (2003 Video)

Great man, not a great film
28 July 2007
I'm a fan. I find Wesley Willis to be entertaining. I greatly looked forward to this documentary on him but unfortunately I found it quite unwatchable. First of all, if you are unfamiliar with Welsey Willis you don't get a lot of explanation early on about who he is and why he is famous. I suppose this film was geared more towards people who are already fans of his. One problem with the film is that there is no clear, understandable narration to explain things. Instead we hear Welsey's voice a lot, often times not very easy to understand, often times not saying very much worth listening to. Also, the film quality is not very good. It reminded me of the show jackass, kind of looks like there were hidden cameras to follow Wesley around which is not very desirable to watch. You get to see things like Welsey going to a Kinkos to print stuff out which isn't quite as interesting as it might sound. There is a scene where a woman who lived with Wesley offers her stories about him. Unfortunately Wesley is sitting next to her in the interview to interrupt and it's kind of distracting. I remember Wesley was on an episode of Howard Stern's radio show and it was great because Howard and the group provided clear insight about Welsey that I think got lost in this confused film.

Behind the Scenes of a Strange Film
7 August 2005
This is a great short film, very unique. Very Troyer and Phil Fondacaro play actors who were cast as Oompa Loompas in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. Here they discuss their trade in the dressing room while putting on the Loompa suits. It balances humor and seriousness as best as any film possibly could. They joke about themselves and more "big time" actors. Overall, though, there's a sadness to the film as we realize that due to the fact that these guys were born small they will never be offered the lead role but will be left dancing in the background. Vern isn't that great of an actor, but this film is definitely worth seeing, it opened my eyes up to the world "bit players" must face.
