Grantchester (2014)
Later seasons far more enjoyable
I'm enjoying the series so much more now that it's about the mystery each episode and the friendships between the characters as opposed to the two main characters getting drunk, being miserable, and doing things that devastate everyone.
Just the right amount of drama now, with a bit of humour thrown in. I never used to look forward to the show until Brittney became the new vicar, and now I'm excited to see what happens next.
Emma. (2020)
Tries too hard to be clever and made me cringe
So boring to see yet another film that stresses style over substance. It tries too hard to be clever, but lacks real charm, wit and heart. Several of the actors seem to struggle with the dialogue -- I'm not sure if this was a choice by the director? I hate the high-pitched, breathy, affected accents. Such a shame, because the cast is amazing and the costumes are absolutely stunning and wonderfully accurate. It's like watching an amateur play, and I feel the a tors deserve better than this.
Spectre (2015)
Tired, dull, not even a fun distraction
For a movie that was so expensive to make, it looks and feels like a thrown-together episode of a mediocre tv show. It lacks any sense of adventure, atmosphere, humour, or urgency -- BLAH would be the best way to describe it. It makes beautiful locales look tired and dull and everything feels very staged. Plus, Daniel Craig really needs to go -- his clenched-jaw acting is getting boring and he has zero charm. He's just believable as a mindless brute.
Whitstable Pearl (2021)
A fun and cozy mystery series
This show is for people who like mysteries set in quaint, small towns with a likeable protagonist and charming, recurring characters. It's for oriole who like she's like "Midsomer Murders", "Doc Martin", "Father Brown", "New Tricks", etc. Light entertainment and (after the first episode) I've grown to really like the two leads.
Stardust (2007)
A confusing but okay film
The movie starts off well, with a quaint setting and a classic fairy tale set-up. The bar is impressive, with numerous well-known British and Irish actors, as well as megastar American ones. HOWEVER, the film soon starts to devolve into too many characters and plot lines that are not fleshed out adequately. You don't get all that invested in the two leads, who are pretty dull. Also, the film isn't that old but contains several weird plot devices, such as characters who fall for their kidnapper/abusers, or how the threat of sexual assault is framed in a comical way.
Women are depicted fairly poorly in this film overall. And instead of having a clear storyline, solid world-building and decent character development, the movie just had a number of "convenient" things happen at the right time but without explanation so that everything gets tied up nicely. I don't hate it, but it does feel like a one-off made-for-TV movie.
Thunder Force (2021)
Not even mildly entertaining
An incredibly boring and forgettable film with a terrible script, awful dialogue, and jokes that fall flat. There's no real plot, no character development. Also, they cast Jadon Bateman, who is a trash person. Wanted to like a film that attempts to bring more diversity to film but casting him really undermines their supposed values.
