Strawberry Mansion (2021)
A surreal comfort movie!
I loved this movie! The aesthetic is very pretty, I got a bit Wes Anderson-, "The adventures of Baron Munchhausen"-, and Terry Gilliam-vibes from it.
The plot is very interesting. I don't understand the people here that says it doesn't make sense. Yes, it's surreal and the weirdness factor is through the roof, which probably is what confuses them. But I love weird and surreal movies that isn't obvious in any way. I hate being spoon fed what a movie is about (which is probably why I hate new and modern films). I like there to be shrouded parts you really have to think about, and movies you might have to see more than one or two times to get the full picture. Strawberry Mansion is just like that!
It's obvious it is on an bit of a budget, but I think that only adds to the charm. The length was good, but maybe they could've tightened the entire thing up a little bit.
To me it is a good sign when the reviews of a movie is either from people who loved it or from people who hated it, and almost no one that was just "Eh...". To me that is a sure sign the movie is interesting and worth a watch.
Anyway...I loved it and I'll definitely see it several times again!
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Read the book first!
So...not having read the book, this movie just seems very long and very weird. It's like an eternity of an old mans confused thoughts and memories.
It's a bit too long for my taste, but over all I liked it. Great acting, great cinematography, and the weirdness factor is way up there. So in those regards the movie is great.
But, for me, it does fall on it's length (I know some people don't mind long movies, but I generally prefer a movie to be maximum 1 hour 40 minutes long, after that the movie have to be really good in order to justify it to be longer than that) and the fact that it makes little sense if you haven't read the book. So, for the first time I don't only think it's advisory to read the book first, but necessary.
Cruella (2021)
Fun, but not that special
Even though I found this a bit inspiring, to step out of your shell and dare to be your true self, I couldn't help but feel that this was mostly like watching a two hour long temper tantrum.
Might be worth watching though, if you like Disney villains and have two very long hours to kill.
Spellbinder (1988)
Recommend. Will watch again.
I thought this movie was kinda silly, stupid and boring, right up until the end when it all came together and made the whole movie worth watching!
So despite the old timey, laughable, satanic panic, I really liked it!
I think this deserves to come back into the light and maybe even deserves a remake.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Don't waste your time.
I was excited when I saw that Luc Besson directed this, and thought "Then it HAVE to be good". I was gravely disappointed.
The movie looks good - beautiful colourscheme and amaing cinematography. But that is all this movie offeres.
The acting is HORRIBLE! Overall it is at a B-movie level, but Delevigne and DeHaan makes this movie seem like it's for kindergarteners. They say all of their lines like they're just reading off a paper.
And towards the end DeHaans character refuses orders and punshes his commander in the face, and LITERALLY the next minute he turns to Delevigne and says "I'm a soldier. I follow the rules. That's who I am." Ummm....what?
No...complete garbage. Would not recommend.
However....you could turn off the sound and look at some of the cool scenes, though.
