Filling in the Blanks (2023)
Must see if you are into DNA testing
I am surprised I am the first one rating this very well done documentary. This movie is a must see to any one who has done DNA testing and found surprises once the results comes back. While this documentary focus exclusively about being conceived through a sperm donor, the emotional road each person travels once he/she finds out the truth, is not much different than finding out one is adopted, or that one of your parents had an affair. I do believe that for all those people that are experiencing DNA surprises, this documentary will help you understand, forgive, reconcile.
At time Jon Baime sense of humor reminded me of Seinfeld. He keeps the documentary light and smoothly paced. I loved the cake message, the ending in the wall, and the gratitude shown. I find it refreshing that someone had the courage and goodwill to share his story. Kudos to the Blaine brothers for helping Jon making this documentary.
Fatale (2020)
Fatal Attraction type of movie
If you liked Fatal attraction, Basic Instinct, Single White Female, A perfect murderer, sleeping with the enemy, Misery, you will enjoy this movie.
I am surprised with all the low ratings. I was discouraged to watched it but Hilary Swank has never disappointed me, and I am glad I saw it. It engages you from the beginning and keeps you hooked. It has a very good twist that ai did not see coming. Granted there are some holes that goes unexplained but that does not take away the entertainment value of this move.
I am not familiar with Michael Ealy but I thought he did a decent job in the movie.
El Rey: Vicente Fernández (2022)
Very loosely about Vicente Fernández - Too much fiction and Fantasy to be a biography
I waited to see the entire series before writing this. I wanted to give it 8 out 10, but by the last episode I dropped it to 4. Don't watch it if you want a serious biography. Watch it if you want to hear a lot of Mariachis
It could have been remotely entertaining if it was not supposed to be about Vicente Fernández I am a fan of true biography. A little bit of fiction to make it more entertaining is ok, but this is more fiction than biography. As an example of a very good biography, you have the series Pablo Escobar - El Patrón del Mal. They sticked to the true events to the point of imitating the clothing worn by the characters in real life.
In el Rey the fiction became became fantasy.
Facts: I could not find any information of el Chente being with Somoza or retained in Nicaragua, or and most of the secondary characters (aside from his family) are fictional.
Fantasy: The character of Death dressed as a Mariachi is pathetic. Absurd.
Chronology: At the beginning I did not like all the back and forward in time between child, teenager, young adult, and adult, but now I see it was a good move. I could not stand the child and teenager singing! The best acting and story is with the young adult and adult. Furthermore, I confess I fast forward most of the child and teenager parts.
But with all the poetic license the series took with more fiction than truth, I have to say the actor did a superb job capturing the essence of el Chente: The artist, loving family man, the man who overcame hardships, the icon, a kind and generous man with a heart as big as Mexico.
Welcome Home (2018)
Not bad at all
I cannot understand all the low reviews. It was not bad alt all and it keep one interested.
Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press (2017)
Good to see the press not always get away with unethical practice.
While the point of view is one sided, and the goal of this documentary is to show us that freedom of press must be protected, this documentary clearly shows us that
* Freedom of press should not be used as a free pass to publish anything irresponsibly
* Every action has consequences.
* Not everything printed or posted is relevant news that people need to know.
