Maigret: Maigret's Dead Man (2016)
For summer nights with clear atmosphere!
I was pleasantly surprised! First of all, I had never heard of the film before, but knowing that Mr Atkinson plays the leading role, a role COMPLETELY distant from those he had played in the past, I was eager to watch it. Let me share with you my three basic impressions:
(a) I was fascinated by the settings, the clothing, the atmosphere, immediately from the very first scene; the one in the farm. Every setting was so carefully set and in so much detail, that I caught myself many times watching the background objects than the action itself.
(b) Direction is really very very good but I think Mr Atkinson is superb! You can "hear" him saying so many things just by watching his eyes. His eyes say everything in the movie! He is actually a genuine human Maigret; a thinker, not a talker.
(c) The plot is from Simenon's novel in late 40s. A classic crime/mystery story, mostly suited for mature audiences. Perhaps younger audiences may find the story somehow outdated.
If you like vintage-style detective/crime/mystery movies, I think that you are going to enjoy that. Mostly suited for summer/autumn nights with clear atmosphere, good company and good drinks!
Blair Witch (2016)
Two Major Warnings
Guys, I saw that movie yesterday. I think that I have to warn you (people who have not seen that and are planning to watch it some time in the future) about two major things:
Warning 1: 95% of the movie is night close shots with a shaking camera to either persons or tree leaves and bushes, shots that will not make you understand anything.
Warning 2: 95% of the movie script is just calling out loud the names of the heroes: PETER! JAMES! LISA! etc.
I would like to write more but I think there is everything included in the two warnings above.
Conclusion: It seems that I eventually lost one and a half hour of my life... pointlessly... meaningless things... better be more cautious next time.
47 Meters Down (2017)
At last! A shark movie without a "RoadRunner/Coyote"-ish end!
ITD is actually a very good surprise! It has nothing to do with the other shark movie SHALLOWS which actually has an end easily borrowed from the world of the cartoon "RoadRunner/Coyote". Here the things seem to be more real and more serious; there are a couple of plot questions/issues but they will not bother you. To my opinion, they are minor and can be without doubt excused for the shake of the whole plot. The movie is for people who like agony, suspense, tension and of course water and sharks. Except sharks, antagonist is also Time (equally important), and that combination makes a very stressful and explosive situation. I also think that you have the best/top reactions during your first watch since you do not know what will happen the next moment. Watching it for a second time will not be the same; most of the magic has gone. But after all, this applies to every thriller, and ITD is a damn good shark thriller... and it has also a damn good twist-plot at the end, unusual and unexpected for a shark movie.
Coherence (2013)
a hara-kiri movie
I think that this movie has absolutely nothing to give to a viewer. Terrible acting. Stupid scenario. Scenes without any logical meaning (ie. logical for the whole movie story). The original idea could be developed to a supreme movie with a lot of twists but here things just happen (sometimes they just not happen at all) pointlessly.
I recall that a similar movie to that one, related to human copies, is "+1" (of the same year 2013) which was not very good itself; it was just a "normal" movie. Actuall to my humble opinion, if you compare "1" to "Coherence", "+1" is by far far far better.
I think the movie is completely awful. What a pity, actually pity.
