The Eiger Sanction (1975)
Like an 8.8/10. It seems a little bit long, but it's a great adventure with very memorable scenes.
It's criminal that this movie's IMDb score is in the sixes. I mean, just think of all the other movies out there with a similar rating and compare them to this...There's loads more substance and character here than others in this range, and it's a Clint Eastwood movie for God's sake. The man's a certified national treasure, and he's as awesome here as he is in any of his movies.
Now it does seem slightly long, or rather progresses somewhat slowly, but there wasn't a scene in particular I didn't enjoy or would have removed. There's a lot to this movie. Funny as hell throughout with clever, sharp dialogue, interesting characters and spy plot, and not to mention a great rock climbing movie too. All around a great adventure movie carried entirely by the honorable Clint Eastwood.
Watch this, or add it to a list and watch it some other time. Far better than the ratings suggest, and therefore a pleasant surprise. :)
Asteroid City (2023)
It's going to take some time and multiple viewings, but everything is there
Huge Wes Anderson fan here. Every single one of his movies I've walked away from going "hmm", and felt a bit underwhelmed. But as time passes and I've given each multiple viewings, every single one of them has blossomed into a subtle masterpiece that I can watch endlessly.
I just left the theater and sure enough, I'm not quite sure what I've seen or that I've understood it. There's so much happening at such an odd pacing that it's tough not to be wide eyed at the spectacle on screen.
I took it all in on first viewing, but it's going to need more. And I can't wait for it all to click and I fall in love with every bit of it!
See it! Then give it some time. Then see it again. And again. And again. Just like The Life Aquatic, Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox and the rest of his classics.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
How often is the fourth movie in a series THIS good?
The answer to the question in the title is: never. John Wick is the exception. This is a highly intelligent, visceral action movie with room to grow, even after this being the fourth in the series.
You know how Marvel has its universe with spin-offs for main characters? That's how I foresee the future of John Wick. I want more movies, focusing on more cities, chapters, and characters in the universe these movies have created. Cane alone would make a phenomenal addition to the series, and deserves his own film.
Keanu Reeves is better than ever in Chapter 4, but he is aging. JW fans want MORE!
Old Henry (2021)
This is a masterpiece.
You know one when you see one. Grittier than Grit. Meaner than Wick. Fairer than Justice. Historic. See it and take it in. It has that good American stuff.
Unhinged (2020)
Read the premise. It's not hiding anything.
I enjoyed this movie a great deal. Keyword there is "movie". It's just a movie. There's nothing in it that you couldn't have picked up from the description. It's basically just Russell Crowe killing people in today's often backwards world.
Not an award winner. Not even a nominee. Just a movie to watch to kill some time. 8/10 on its own kind of scale.
Moonbase 8 (2020)
A great 7/10 light comedy. 7/10 comedy is just right.
This show is awesome. It's funny, light, easily watchable, and has John C. Riley in it. It's not a show that sets out to be or do anything, it's just funny people in funny situations.
It's really too bad there's so many Gremlins bringing the score down, especially when shows like HBO's Avenue 5 are mysteriously liked. That show sucks in every way.
But this show is great. It deserves some love. Just look at the cast, it tells you everything the bad reviews leave out.
Devs (2020)
Rooted for the Amaya Corp the Whole Way Through
Overall this is a great show, one that discusses the potential of the inevitable quantum computing revolution. The writing is excellent, and the last episode actually manages to surprise in an otherwise predictable universe.
Now I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but I was rooting for Amaya and Devs the whole series. I wanted the main character to fail, and for technology to succeed. This is partially attributable to the annoyance that is the main character, as many have mentioned, and partially in favor of the United States versus its geopolitical rivals. Any sympathy I could have had for the main character was nullified by the reveal of Sergey's mission early on.
It's great to see quantum mechanics and quantum computing being crucial to a storyline, and I appreciated the detail put into the aesthetics of the computer itself. I would and will recommend this show to many, as its whole is better than the parts it's composed of.
8/10, and hoping for another season!
Avenue 5 (2020)
Some Reviewers Believe They Are Smarter For Enjoying This Show...
But that's nonsense.
The show just isn't very funny. It's watchable in a sea of relatively worse crap, but don't expect much. It seems like its team of writers procrastinated until the last minute, then through it together in hopes of toilet humor and cheap jokes saving the day. Not much honest wit to be found, unfortunately.
