The Deepest Breath (2023)
Good documentary of a pointless sport
Free diving is probably the most pointless sport I've come across so there is a huge merit in making a documentary about it which is this watchable.
During this docco, we see divers putting themselves in danger and putting the safety divers in danger all the time.
Among all, Alessia is the most dislikable character as she selfishly and routinely puts herself in danger doing these dangerous dives knowing full well she wasn't prepared for it.
At the same time, her charismatic boyfriend loved by all the community is portrayed as this life saving angel who would give his life to safe someone else.
The doc reaches its pinnacle when in one of this expected accidents, he dies saving her. Tragic as it is that a great guy lost his life it's difficult to feel sympathy for this people and their sport .
Ted Lasso: No Weddings and a Funeral (2021)
Rubbish
Not as bad as episode 8 but it makes you question why you keep watching this show. After episode 5 they just keep adding very poor characters to the story and I can't even remember the last time I saw a football.
Hope they don't make a season 3.
Ted Lasso: Beard After Hours (2021)
Terrible
My guess is that the creators had signed a contract for 10 episodes and couldn't think of anything better.
A season with just 9 episodes would have been fine. This one was so bad it's going to stick in my memory. No more of this please.
Sophie: A Murder in West Cork (2021)
Worth watching
A remote cottage overlooking a lighthouse. A beautiful French woman brutally murdered in a quiet town with a mixed community of locals and foreign artists. There's an allure in this iconic setup.
Everyone distrusts everyone, a thoroughly incompetent investigation but a main suspect arises... Everything seems to be pointing in the same direction.. Will the Irish police and legal system be able to bring justice for Sophie and her family?
I didn't like the West Cork audiobook as it was full of irrelevant side stories by the end but this documentary delivers.
I hated the parts in the first episode where they mentioned Irish legends too. They could have dwelled more on how the Gardai botched the murder scene the first day but all in all this was a well made documentary.
Les diaboliques (1955)
Terrible even for 1955
I was awed by the reviews and story behind the movie. I decided to watch it and I ended up disappointed and so will you.
It is SO SLOW! And the twist can be seen about half the movie in.
Do yourself a favour and watch something else instead.
Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
Of course it doesn't match the first one
The first movie was a surprisingly good and fresh comedy full of A-class acting that left me startled. My expectations were not set high for the sequel but I found it pretty watchable. Sure thing the new characters are all stereotypical and shallow: the stupid blonde or the artsy guy being the worst but all in all, I was not disappointed.
Cobra Kai (2018)
Larusso wins the All-Valley tournament '84 with an illegal kick to the face
That should have been the headline the next day 30 years ago!
That aside, as an 80's karate kid fanboy I have to say I did not expect much from this show but... it turned out to be better than I could have imagined!
The writing is worthy of praise, great cast of actors, plot brilliantly threaded and I love the fact that Johnny is the real protagonist thus ending the decades long discussion: JOHNNY LAWRENCE WAS THE REAL KARATE KID!
UPDATE: Again, I didn't expect much from season 2 but they pulled it off. It was as good as season 1 or even better.
I know that these comments might set the bar too high for those who haven't seen the show yet but I think this show is a gift to all those who grew up watching the original movie. A must-see!
Sex Education (2019)
Great cast, story line and soundtrack!
I wasn't completely sold after the first episode but this shows grows on you to the point that you'll end up binge-watching it.
Everything is so well-put together: a young talented cast, the fresh and open dialogue about each character's sexuality and all the subplots in the story (except Otis' mum's romance with the plumber which bored me to death). The fantastic soundtrack deserves a special mention.
This is one of the best sitcoms I've watched in the last few years. I can't wait for season 2!
Le chalet (2017)
It's a failure all across the board
I only went through all six episodes of 'Le chalet' because I'm working on my French.
However, everything about this show is entirely off-putting to the viewer: the script and the dialogues are shallow as a shower lacking any originality; the characters are plain simple and everything's topped off with a remarkably bad acting which is the epitome of overreacting.
The soundtrack and scores are worthy of another review altogether.
If you're looking to watch French speaking shows, I can't stop recommending: 'les revenants', 'the break' and 'dix pour cent'.
White Squall (1996)
Spoiler movie titles
It's an entertaining movie about the friendship forged among a group of teenagers who sail throughout the world in a ship/school. The story is developed dynamically and it is filmed in really beautiful landscapes.
The only reason of my review is this: the importance of choosing the title. The events occurred through the film do not forecast the incident that will happen eventually i.e. the "white squall"
In my opinion, the story could have had several different endings although the unfortunate movie title makes you watch the movie with another perspective. More or less, in the middle of the film the question you are asking yourself is: When is the squall going to take place? Instead of, what is it going to happen next?
Like I said, the title of this movie was an inappropriate choice.
