Halloween Ends (2022)
You can't go 'Home' again!
While I agree that this film was slow, (the plot dragged on a good hour) and there was little in what I've come to expect from "Halloween"-a thorough chase of wills and wit between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers-it does deliver a constant message that has repeated itself, for me, after 1981's "Halloween II"- (which I find to be even more frightening than it's predecessor. The music score alone kicked up the scary scale not to mention being in a hospital on Halloween night is creepy alone.) ....and the message is: Michael's nights of 'Coming Home' you cannot replicate over and over and over again. The 1981 sequel was on the cusp of the sequel bandwagon at the time it was released (being one of the first horror films to do so) and that's where it 'ends' for me. The storyline that Michael is Laurie's sister was a good connection. (I never understood why it bothered so many when I find it's the 'glue' that kept the suspense together.) The reason why Michael targeted her in the first place. It all made perfect sense.
After the 1981 film trying to get the story reconfigured and rearranged in timing and characters is not only confusing it's manipulating. So I Look at these 'other' films as an entirely different movie altogether.
You have to care about the characters in a film. Especially a horror film. You even have to care about the villain in terms of fear and you don't really care about these characters. Some not given enough time to develop and some overdeveloped, like Corey. Michael Myers story is lost in much of the picture and not explaining how he got where he ended up and stayed there for four years crippled the plot entirely. Laurie Strode doesn't even have much character development in this chapter. Lindsay Wallace was "Totally" a missed opportunity here as she's in this film so infrequently it makes very little impact or sense. Being the last two surviving characters from 1978 this was a huge mistake to not have these two ladies on screen more.
That being said, you can try and try and try, and they did for over 40 years-but you can't 'go home again'-not even Michael Myers.
The Princess (2022)
Reflect Upon Our Own Needs to Watch and Why we Watch
I can't help but think that, I too, am part of the problem for having watched this. Our needs as human beings to view another's life. To put others higher on a pedestal than we are. When in reality we should all be equals.
Is it entertainment I'm not so sure. Yes, it's done well and it's nice to reminisce. New footage and reactions emerge. But there is a time about halfway thru that the conscience kicks in and you start to ask yourself "should I be watching this? Isn't THIS the problem?"
Queer as Folk (2022)
I tried to get through this until the painfully last episode.
I feel like I deserve a merit badge for having endured eight of the most terrible episodes of television I have ever experienced.
You have to care about the characters first and foremost and I just don't really care much about them.
This would have been much better had they brought back all the original characters from the US version of QAF. Brian,Michael,Sunshine,Emmett,Ted, Lindsay,Melanie,Ben and last and certainly not least Debbie Nivotny.
These actors played well against each other. You cared what happened to them.
Quite a contrast to the train wreck I endured for eight long hours.
Throwing in Kim Cattral and Juliette Lewis to save a sinking ship that cannot be rescued. I actually feel badly that these two green lighted being on this.
Dopesick (2021)
So Real it Hurts.
I'm going to keep this simple.
Never have I seen a program so real, it hurts.
But It's a necessary watch.
I have Lost too many people to ignore.
And if you get one thing from this eight part series, here it is.
Be vigilant and aware.
One small tweak here and there and it could cost you your job, your family, your peace, your life.
One pill becomes two. Two becomes three. Three becomes five........
It's a Sin (2021)
If you don't have any face tissue in the house stock up before watching this brilliant program.
Wow, just Wow.
What can I say that hasn't already been said. "It's a Sin" is a very good program with excellent performances captured by all. The music is in itself its own character gently weaving the viewer into time and of the space that these snippets of dialogue each character represents itself. This is not propaganda, this is the truth, told by brilliant storytelling and writing, something most current shows are lacking. "It's a Sin" ticks all the right buttons. It is engaging. You actually care about each and every close knit character-even the ones who are despicable because without them you simply can't tell the whole story of what was really happening during these dark days...some still occurring nearly forty years later.
Because the performers capture your heart and tug at your emotions you will cry like a baby. I know I did. And even days after viewing this program-it sits with you, in a good way. Because they got everything right here. You want these people to succeed.
That is the making of good television and this is its finest five episodes. Well done.
And as I wrap this up, I have to say Colin will forever be a character I will know years from now, think of fondly and wish I could be-and strive to be him. That's what great actors do-Callum Scott Howells, bravo.
Thirtysomething: I'll Be Home for Christmas (1987)
They Don't Get Any Better Than This.....
Family. They can love you and they can hurt you. This episode is the penultimate of the series in my opinion. Tackling conflicting religions, conflicting obligations and conflicting relatives. What we do to hurt the ones we love the most we realize that when it's all said and done these people will always be there for you, no matter what.
And just like the last light on the Menorah and a nice, tidy bow on a Christmas present it comes to a tear jerking finale you will want to play back each and every Holiday Season.
They don't make shows as good as 'Thirtysomething' was some thirty years ago.
Snoopy in Space (2019)
Snoopy is just what the Doctor ordered!
This is such a breath of fresh air! Something familiar, yet new, a comfort in a time and place that's less than comfortable. Snoopy, Woodstock and the entire Peanuts gang are here for a few moments to take the heavy load off of your day and give you some much needed relief. Thank u Apple, I needed this.
Another Woman (1988)
Very Moving
I have never seen a film that immediately brought me to an emotional state. I was vested in these characters almost instantly. The story unfolds slowly into what I believe is a very natural and very human tale of life, loss, wins, losses and regrets....almost Dickens' like in its approach with subtle hints of Hitchcock. I think this is Woody Allens best film. Full of melancholy and deep analysis. The soundtrack, a song written by Erik Satie, is the perfect background for what this film is trying to convey. 'Another Woman' could be played over and over again in order to grasp all of the main characters thoughts and feelings. This movie touched me...like no movie I have ever seen before. Excellent. Poignant. Moving. A must watch for any Woody Allen fan. I've been a fan of Gena Rowland's and this was one of her finest performances!
