John Doe: Vigilante (2014)
Worth a look
I must admit to being a bit perplexed by some of the reviews for this film. I found it extremely compelling and confronting, perhaps audiences and critics no longer want to be challenged to think when they see a movie?
It seems to me that the only way this film wouldn't resonate with you was if you had managed to get through your life without ever feeling victimized at any level.
I would highly recommend an open mind if you do choose to see this title as well as the willingness to think about your own morality and level of participation in society, this is not a gentle film, it is film that will challenge you on a number of levels.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Bogs down a bit...
I really wanted to like this film and I did, just not as much as I wanted to.
It is solid and apart from a section in the middle when it bogs down a bit is very entertaining.
Slight spoiler follows.....
The ending is actually quite clever but only if you actually think about it, on the surface it comes across as a typical pat Hollywood ending. I think this has probably hurt the film a bit in reviews as most audience members won't bother to think it through and understand it.
Definitely worth a look but maybe wait for DVD.
The Machinist (2004)
Check this out!
Really clever film that is definitely worth a look.
Everything comes together at the end neatly and it's quite satisfying.
I quite enjoy movies that pose a question and then spend time letting you try and work out the answer, it's particularly satisfying when the film finally answers the question and you have been blindsided by the answer even though it was there all along, think Sixth Sense. This film fits that bill and is something you should check out.
It's also quite staggering to think that Christian Bale went from this physical condition straight to Batman, he is an underrated actor who has now likely pigeon holed himself into certain roles, but let's hope not as he has a lot to offer in a variety of roles.
