Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
2nd try, still not the charm
In my eyes, it still is a monumental waste of time and digital space - if that's even possible. I took a long break before revisiting this item. Believe me, there will not be a third go around. I've learned my lesson.
Texas Cyclone (1932)
Classic early western!
Great early movie from Tim McCoy. I would have rated it a "7" but it holds two of the best lines of any movie, ever. No matter how many times I've heard them before, I have to chuckle each time one of them comes up.
Rogue Warfare 3: Death of a Nation (2020)
Not brain food
This is one of those movies that fall into the realm of "mindless entertainment". It won't kill you to watch it, but you sure won't get any smarter doing so,
Rugal (2020)
Good for tweens and young teens
If you're in the target audience, this should be pretty enjoyable, though I'll admit to only seeing half of it so far. Mid teens and up are going to find it pretty lame.
Doctor Who (2005)
Serious nosedive after Matt Smith
Enjoy watching the Tennant/Smith episodes. Most are well written with commendable acting. I quickly lost interest when Capaldi came on board. It took about 5 episodes before I just wrote the program off. I did come back a couple of times but saw no improvement. When Whittaker took over I stayed away. Recently I did check out three of her episodes. She might have been all right, had Tennant not been a previous Doctor. The two main points I disliked were that her acting just seems like a poor man's rip off of Tennant's, and I just couldn't wrap my head around the whole entourage of disinteresting character thing.
Death Valley Days: Girl with a Gun (1962)
Historical or blatant fiction?
There's no complaint about the theatrical part of the episode. The story line is good and all the actors do their parts well. However, after reading the biography for "Little Britches" on Wiki, there are major questions about the historical side of the story. In comparison, almost nothing matches between the tv episode and the Wiki page (though we all know how far off some of them can be).
Wonder Woman (2017)
B movie on a big budget
The best I can say about the film was that it was watchable ... once. Now that it has been seen, I don't foresee ever saying that I'd like to sit through it again. How it managed to win, or even be nominated for, the awards that it garnered will be forever one of life's mysteries. I feel I'm being overly gracious with the "5" rating.
Stargate: Atlantis (2004)
Could have been a winner
When this show originally aired I remember watching a couple of seasons, then let it slip off my watch schedule. Up to a few months ago I couldn't remember why. Thanks to Comet TV, who just rebroadcast the series. I forced myself to sit through the entire 5 seasons and can now answer that question with one name, Rodney McKay.
During the first couple of seasons he was treated as more of a secondary character. His caustic personality and incessant whining was tolerable when taken in small doses. As the show progressed though, his part expanded into a major cast member. By the time season 4 rolled around it seemed like almost every episode centered on him (so much so I'm surprised they didn't rename the show "The Rodney McKay Hour") killing most desires I had to watch it.
It's a shame, too. The rest of the cast, and most of the story lines, were pretty interesting. I just could have done without the "fingers on a chalkboard" feeling the McKay character brought to the mix.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
More Like the Force Is Derailed
There may be spoilers in this write up.
I originally gave this movie a rating of "5", based solely on it's very good 3-D effects. After thinking about it though, I realized I was being way too generous considering that once the 3-D version runs are through at the movie houses, we'll only be left with standard viewing versions. In light of that, I knocked my rating back to a "2".
You can read a lot of the other low rated reviews to find many of the issues I have with the poor casting, the director's vision(?), and the sad acting, so I won't bother going there. What REALLY bugs me about this movie is that it does not continue the Star Wars saga. In 1977 we were introduced to this wonderful, new universe. At sometime we were promised a 9 movie collection, with 3 films focused on the now, 3 more delving into the past, and a final 3 taking us to the future.
The present went off without a hitch. The past was finally shown to us after an awful 16 year delay. When those 3 films ended in 2005, who would have thought it would be another 11 years before we got a glimpse into the future. Finally, that time has arrived, only to find there seemingly is no future since this movie only represents a retelling of the 1977 original dressed up in modern technology and a sad mix of new and old characters.
What should have been over and done with in 20 years has now taken 39, with 2 movies still to go. What's worse, is that now I have no idea when the next installment comes out if it will actually be a continuation of the saga, or just a sad remake of "Return of the Jedi".
They seriously need to fire the director, hire some real writers, and get this story back on track.
Chappie (2015)
Not the Worst, but ...
I have to wonder if I'm overlooking something. Normally, the ratings here on IMDb are half way accurate for my viewing tastes. This film was definitely an exception. How it got a rating of 7+, I'll never know. Now, it doesn't rate in the worst film category, but there are enough flaws in it, both in acting and direction, that to me would keep it from being listed as anything other than mediocre.
I'm not going to rehash the good and bad points. Those have been more than covered by the other reviewers here. In a way I got lucky by waiting until it hit the discount theater. I only paid $2.75 to see it, so I didn't feel utterly cheated. On reflection though, even that might have been too much. If you just need something to watch, and it doesn't cost you anything, I'd say go for it. At least under those conditions if you can't bring yourself to sit through the whole thing, all you lose is a little bit of time.
