Quantum Leap (1989)
Terrific Series
I've been a fan of this show since my parents used to watch it when I was a little kid. I watched it proper again in about 2008 when I was 21. It's a very fun show to watch, but it does suffer a bit from being a product of its time - the acting, the fashion & set design (particularly for the "future" scenes), the cinematography, the effects, and the writing all get pretty on-the-nose at times, as well as the "white saviour" complex that was very typical of the time.
Additionally, I get wicked second hand embarrassment from watching it. So if that's something you tend to experience when watching shows with awkward situations, be forewarned that it gets bad!!
Having said that, you can't help but love the characters, and a lot of the episodes are beautiful self-contained explorations into American recent history, and how a lot changes, and yet human kindness stays the same.
I might have been critical of the show in this review, but I watch everything with a critical eye and very often I still love it, which is absolutely true of this show.
Carter (2018)
Comedy First
If you're watching this for the mystery and crime, you will probably be disappointed. You'll notice that any time it gets serious, the flaws in the crime procedural start becoming noticeable, and that's because this show is first and foremost a comedy, and the plots serve the gags more than anything else.
But if you are watching it with the idea of having a fun time and not thinking too hard, it's a great time and I recommend it.
My favourite episode is probably the one in season 2 that revolves around the life insurance company, and it's about as silly as the show gets too.
Pretty sad it ended, but glad I watched it.
Sliders (1995)
Frustratingly unsatisfying
So I've just spent my week binging the whole series beginning to end. During the original run of the show, I only ever saw the first 20 minutes of the pilot, and then years later, one episode from Season 4 (the introduction of Colin). But now I've seen everything up to Season 5 episode 3, and I just can't watch any more.
As all the reviews here have said, this show started out pretty good. I mean there were definitely parts that strained suspension of disbelief, and there are definitely early episodes that lick the boot of 90s era USA in a way that, in 2020s hindsight, feels extremely on the nose. But overall it's a fun romp that has some thoughtful moments, but could have used a few more character moments than it had.
But then Season 3 happened, and it started to get real bad. Besides the unceremonious death of Arturo, the introduction of the recurring villains Rickman and the Kromaggs really started bringing the show down. Maggie started out as a very annoying character, but she improved in Season 4 while the show around her deteriorated. It starts with the exit of Wade who ends up at some breeding camp and only barely mentioned again. The character of Colin seemed like he could have been a good boost to the show, a long lost brother etc, but it's never explored. He's just rapidly added to the cast and is just there for the rest of season 4 without any real emotional development.
Then Season 5 starts with the O'Connell brothers leaving the show, and the main character of Quinn is dealt with in a ridiculous way. Colin is gone forever, lost in the multiverse so that's bad enough, but they took Quinn, put him inside another guy who looks and acts different, and then basically criticises the viewer in episode 2 for wanting him to have any attributes even slightly related to the original Quinn. Is he the same guy or not? They seem to want it both ways. They want you to accept this completely different dude as essentially Quinn, except without the intellect and personality that defined him. What were they thinking? It would have been better if they hadn't tried to force him as a replacement at all. This is just kind of an insult. So that's why I had to stop watching. And from what I've read, it's a good thing I did because it doesn't get better.
Incidentally, I am open to Fanfic recommendations that undo these glaring problems. Anything to feel less dissatisfied and cold after investing so much time into watching this show...
Miss March (2009)
I cannot be nice to this movie.
Thank goodness I never saw this in the cinema - it was on TV the other night and I watched the first half with my sister, at which point we could no longer take anymore.
This is the kind of movie that is the opposite to everything I like about movies. It is crude and sexist, the main characters are absolutely unlikeable, it has several jokes that involve feces, there are homicidal firemen trying to run the main characters' car off the road even though they only have a beef with one of the two occupants - oh, and they can whip up firemen in OTHER states to do the same thing (seriously WHAT?).
The protagonist's friend is the most reprehensible person I've ever seen in a movie that wasn't portrayed as a villain. He wakes his friend up from a 4-year coma by hitting him in the face with a baseball bat. And then kidnaps him from his hospital room before he is rehabilitated, and much more.
The film might still have been saved, if not for the head-poundingly annoying acting of Trevor Moore. His relentless irritating talking is what ultimately made me turn this thing off. "Blah blah blah Playboy, blah blah blah blah blah boobs, blah blah blah Playboy." That's his character in a nutshell.
If you enjoy terrible films, by all means see this movie. But I don't think I can be friends with you.
Horrible Histories (2001)
A kids show with humour for all ages.
I'm 20, but I love this show because it's funny. I wish I could see more episodes than I have.
The show features around Stitch and Mo, two school students who have an advantage to learning history: Some voice-over guy sends them back in time to whatever period they need to learn about. From there, plenty of wacky hijinks are involved. But, it is also educational. Between the gags some real history is learned. For example, in the viking time period, they learn that the viking horns are only used for ceremonial purposes, something that I learned in high school. They then use this knowledge to upstage their snooty classmate in a school presentation.
I thoroughly enjoy watching this show, and if you ever notice it in the TV guide, check it out.
