Vulcano, figlio di Giove (1962)
Unintentionally Hilarious
This is basically a poorly dubbed Italian B story about ancient Greek mythology with Roger Browne as Mars and Rod Flash (stage moniker for Iloosh Kooshabe) in the part of Vulcan. What makes this movie so funny is not the story but the costumes (like plastic skirts, and diapers sparkling silver boots that would make Liberache and Mario Bava envious). Put all of this together with an absolutely ludicrous fight scene, and you have Vulcan, Son of Jupiter. It's difficult to put this into words. You would have to see the movie to get what I'm saying. This is a very rare film and the only copy I could find was inside of the "50 movie warriors DVD pack" available at Amazon. I gave this movie a rating of 10 because it was so bad it was good! If your that type of person who enjoys terrible movies, this is the film for you!
The Navy vs. the Night Monsters (1966)
Under rated and overlooked science fiction movie.
I would think the title alone would be enough to scare off anyone looking for a good science fiction show. After watching the movie, I was really impressed. I mean I was expecting something stupid, However, you can't judge a book by it's cover. The Navy vs. the Night Monsters was and is a good low budget film. The scenery was above average (making you feel you were really there). The acting was decent and the story was well written. But the title is very misleading and I can understand why it was probably overlooked by most people. Oh well, I gave it a chance and it paid off. If you should come across this movie somewhere, why not check it out. If your a nostalgic sci-fi buff like me, you will enjoy it.
War of the Colossal Beast (1958)
The Amazing Colossal Man continues in part 2
After Glenn Langan falls from the Hoover Dam, we find that he survives the drop and floats down the river into Mexico where he emerges once again as Dean Parkin. For some unknown reason, Glenn Langan did not appear in the second movie so American International hired a look alike actor(Parkin) to portray the giant man. Extra facial makeup was used to hide the face and give the impression that the giant had a serious injury. This was done to hide the face of the real actor and trick the audience into believing that it was the same actor from the first film (perhaps Glenn wanted more money to appear in the second feature and A.I. said no).Anyway,in this sequel, our giant man cannot speak, only mumble and moan and roam the countryside looking for delicious morsels of food to eat. And that's about it. Just a lot of action without the dialog. It's fun to watch Dean Parkin act without saying a word until the last scene when he says "Joyce!". The special effects were a good effort from Bert I. Gordon. The acting was terrible but that didn't matter. The focus of the movie was action and nothing more. I would seriously recommend getting this movie only if you have seen the first one because by itself, this movie is direction-less. Have fun and enjoy!!!!
The Amazing Colossal Man (1957)
Excellent B science fiction classic
I really loved this movie. I remember watching it when I was just a little kid back in 1970. It was shown on a regular basis on independent TV stations every other 3 months or so. I couldn't wait to see it again so I kept watching the TV guide to see when they would show it again. I have always been a fan of B movies because it gives you the chance to see good actors in great stories. A favorite actor of mine is Glenn Langan. He started out in the late 30's and appeared in mostly action B movies. I believe he was never really given the chance to showcase all his talents. Most of the movies he's appeared in are difficult to find except this one, "The Amazing Colossal Man". Produced in 1957 by American International, this movie was actually the counterpart of Universal International's "The Incredible Shrinking Man". It's about an army man who is subjected to a blast of plutonium radiation and grows to towering proportions. Due to the success of this feature, A.I. produced a sequel called "War of the Colossal Beast" not as good, but still entertaining. If you should ever see this movie on your video shelf, I would get it, because it's worth it. In closing this statement, I would like to say that Glenn Langan will go down in film history as the first Amazing Colossal Man.
The Creeping Terror (1964)
Yes folks, bad movies are good!
I remember watching this movie a long time ago on a San Francisco Bay Area TV station called "Creature Features". I had no idea what a bad movie was until I saw this one. I don't fully remember the entire show, but there were parts that stood out like a sore thumb. For example: the sound track got so out of syncronization, that the producer's had to add narration to complete the story. In another part, a government scientist or someone like that started a fire inside the cheap spaceship and got away by crawling out from under the bottom of it. As he was running away, he accidentally tripped, and landed face first, on a hard gravel pathway. You could see that he was in pain, and was stunned for about 5 or 10 seconds as the camera was still rolling. He finally snapped out of it and resumed his escape. And yet in another segment, as the carpet creature walks around, you can see peoples shoes underneath it, guiding the creature in every which direction. WOW! And the spaceship, GEE! how can a formless elongated blob come out of a skinny coned cylinder with sophisticated instrumentation and chairs? AMAZING! What imagination! This movie is worth watching for so many reasons. I would love to see it again if I could find it. Perhaps someone has an extra copy up in the attic or basement. OKAY, I'm going to seriously look for it! And I hope you do to.
