Just saw an advanced screening of D&D2 yesterday and let me start off saying that I'm an enormous fan of the original. I can recite every line, i have an orange tuxedo shirt, and a matching koozie. You get it, I'm a little obsessed. Of course when I saw they were making a new D&D I was just as excited as the rest of you, and a bit skeptical. No need to be worried though.
My rant about the 1994 D&D...
Is it better than the first one? I'm going to say... no way. Not because it's not funny or to goofy or has to much potty humor (like I'm seeing a lot of people saying). I'm going to say no because that first one has a lot going for it with me. I grew up watching the first one. I fell out of my chair in the movie theater when i was just 9 years old watching the original. I thought/still think it's the funniest movie of all time. A classic. The 1994 Dumb and Dumber wouldn't make it today though. The comedy would be thought as juvenile and not clever enough and most of the jokes would be looked at as stupid to people my age. You also miss many of the jokes in the original because the script is perfectly written and so smart when the Farrelly brothers and Jim Carrey were at the top of their game. What I'm getting is is that D&D is a classic and no matter what they did to the sequel it wouldn't be better to me, and I didn't expect it to be. I just expected a funny movie, that brings these guys together again and back to their same dumb tricks. Just like when Nas comes out with a new album you don't expect it to be better than Illmatic, but you expect it to be a good listen at least.
My actual review. D&D2 is a very funny movie from beginning to end, that is smart and incredibly dumb as the original. We catch up with Harry and Lloyd 20 years later living in the same apartment with the same Bo Derek poster wearing similar clothes. There are plenty of scenes that will remind you of the first one. Fantasy scenes, driving across the country, and the pranks will all take you down memory lane. Many scenes will have you cracking up pretty hard too, with plenty of good one liners. I can't say much about it though because I've only seen it once. I've seen the original a million times. It's like saying you don't like a certain album you've only listened to once. It might take some time to get all the jokes or 20 years from now see if it's still funny. It probably will be, only time will tell. A friend of mine was worried that J.C. and J.D. would be trying to impersonate their characters from the original and overdo it at times. Maybe it was him saying that before i saw the movie that put that in my head but i felt that way after seeing it. Some of the jokes felt pretty spoon fed as well. They didn't let the script sell the jokes, they tried harder than they needed to at times. Coming out I thought a lot of the jokes were more gross and over the top than the original. Thinking about it more i realized the original had plenty of over the top moments that made it funny. So as long as you don't compare every little thing to the original like I did you might enjoy it more. I couldn't help myself though.
Overall it was a very funny movie. Worth the price of admission (even though mine was free) that pays a nice tribute to the original with plenty of laughing out loud throughout. Only time will tell if it's good 20 more years from now. Don't compare it to much to the original and you'll enjoy it more.
