The Killer (1989)
7/10
"Heroic in manner...."
28 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
"One Vicious Hit-man. One Fierce Cop. Ten Thousand Bullets." The tagline says it all, that is exactly what you are going to get. The movie is about an assassin, Ah Jong (played by Chow), who injures the nightclub singer , Jennie, in the process of a hit. He feels great pity for his actions, and makes it his mission to redeem himself by helping her. Danny Lee plays a cop who is hellbent on arresting Ah Jong aka Jeffrey for his crimes. From this point on, nothing is taken for granted.

With that said, I thought the film was executed quite well. John Woo throw in some very cinematic moments, including freeze frames, long shots, flashbacks, etc. As for the plot of the movie, you must take it for what it is. The storyline is far from deep or exceptional, but that is made up for with copious violence. The killings in the movie are often gratuitous (in one shootout, at least 50 henchmen must die) but quite fun to watch.

On a final note, reminded me very much of the last scene of Scarface. For those that have seen Scarface, recall the last scene of the movie where Al Pacino takes down a whole army before going down himself, while dark, yet strangely melodic piano music plays in the background. Very similar to The Killer. (the movie also had a scene akin to Rambo III, but I wont give that away)

With that in mind, if you are looking for a well made 2 hr movie with abundant killings, then "The Killer" will certainly live up to its name. 8/10.

16 Blocks...the title says it all

So i just saw a screening of this movie, and my first thought that struck me was its similarity to Phonebooth. In a way, I would say I was right. This movie was exactly what I expected it to be. Both movies lack a deep plot and the title pretty much sums up the movie. So, if you lack movies that don't require a lot of thinking, this is the movie for you. The movie isn't entirely brainless however. Bruce Willis does a nice job as the head hero and there is good screen chemistry that develops between him and Mos Def. So, if your looking for a film with some interesting twists and action, but very little plot, then this is the movie for you. Because the storyline was poor, I give the movie a 6/10

Unleashed (2005)
2/10
Worst movie i've seen in a while
17 May 2005
This was a terrible movie. Some of the parts are so stupid & silly that I found myself laughing out loud. This movie has such an absolutely absurd plot that it is a waste of 8 dollars and 2 hours. Granted, Jet Li kicks some serious a$$, but it is nonetheless a terrible plot. The entire middle section of the movie contains almost no fighting - but instead, the movie tries to build up some stupid love drama. The movie starts out very promising - with some intense fight scenes, but then quickly goes downhill. Jet Li's acting is one for the record books - in some scenes of the movie - you may honestly think that this is a movie about mental retardation. Its extremely hard to classify this movie as a strict action movie (like I was expecting) because of its copious (and over the top) drama. Its a shame that Morgan Freeman's acting skills go to waste, but so be it. He probably should have read the script first. If you don't go into this movie expecting it to be like one of Jet Li's previous ones (i.e. Kiss of the Dragon), then you might like it. It just had way to much horribly acted out drama for my liking. I suggest taking your 8 dollars and going to see a different movie. spend it somewhere else.
