Fushigi no Umi no Nadia (1990)
Good steampunk Jules Verne adventure that slowly turns into Evangelion
There were just a couple of things that took away from this show easily being a 7 or 8:
1) Too long, it felt like it was meant to be 26 eps and the studio forced 39 out of it. Besides the first and last sequence of episodes you never get a constant flow of relevant story. There were multiple straight episodes on the Nautilus or Africa etc. That could have been straight up removed.
2) After about 10 eps there are basically 0 new characters. I liked the arcs with some of them but d*mn can we please just meet someone new over this much screen time?
3) Marie's character is super annoying (sub) and I hate how much screen-time she gets
There were a great amount of pluses with this show however:
- art style: beautiful
- music: amazing, I'm genuinely shocked that the score was as good as it is, and the good tracks are not overused to the point that the good pieces get old
- maturity: I didn't realize til later that Hideki Anno and Miyazaki played a big role in this production, and it really makes a difference. Sometimes characters die unexpectedly, plot twists come out of nowhere, some moment are genuinely violent and heart-wrenching. When the story slowly becomes much more cataclysmic and cosmic toward the end was when this really felt unique and rewarding for a (kids?) show. The way the overarching story gradually unfolds is honestly very satisfying. It's like Evangelion where your biggest questions are answered slowly and methodically and sometimes you need to make your nest guess before they're confirmed (like the mysterious first interaction between Nadia and Nemo that stuck with me even though no new info was revealed)
- the themes of old-timey exploration and wonder are done amazingly at best, and onyl slightly repetitive at worst.
- the first and last sequence of episodes is so exciting to watch, the rest of the show is (mostly) one episode plots that sometimes feel like they didn't need to occur
- the ending is basically feels like Evangelion and very much shifts toward sci-fi but I was fine with it
- the Nadia fan service is pretty dated though.
Ryû to sobakasu no hime (2021)
A unique and refreshing version of a classic
Animation: 9/10
Story: 6/10
This movie invested me emotionally early on, and I thought the world of U looked and felt fantastic. The story is paced quickly and soon you realize that it is a retelling of a famous story (I did not realize it was going for this and was very surprised, although now it seems obvious). After this clear shift in the narrative, I was seriously worried that I predicted a very bland and easy cookie cutter ending, but was relieved to see something totally different occur. The rest of the movie is pretty unpredictable and a very refreshing take on the classic story. I will for sure revisit this movie in the future, and definitely before the other versions of this story.
Green Lantern: The Animated Series: Homecoming (2012)
Oa. Population: like 8 people
Why were there zero green lanterns on Oa. Shouldn't there be like 100,000 Green Lanterns stationed there 24/7? Did they run out of budget?
Cars 3 (2017)
Everyone seems to be missing the point to this movie, they want it to be just another formulaic kids flick
I have really lost interest in Pixar over recent years. Since up, there hasn't really been a groundbreaking Pixar movie. Because of this, and especially after the mess that was Cars 2, I expected this to be extremely mediocre just like most modern Disney movies. But I'm so glad i was wrong.
(only minor spoilers)
I understand why many viewers and critics can hate on this movie. Cars 3 is a movie with themes that center around retirement and giving up after your time is over. I think the vibes these themes create in the movie will relate to adults much more than kids, which is why many may not claim it to be a particularly great kids movie.
I love the feeling of Lightning McQueen grasping with his realization of his final racing days. It's very interesting seeing how everything plays through regarding his frustration and resistance of just simply moving on. I think the plot and its exposition are fairly well executed, and though some parts are fairly predictable, and some pretty cheesy, (mainly why I didn't give it an 8) I still think it's a great film and thoroughly enjoyable. As a fan of Cars since it was released, (when I was a young kid) it really worked well for me, and I think it will for other long time fans.
What's important to realize is that I feel like viewers who are lovers of the first Cars movie, and haters of the second, will thoroughly enjoy this movie, probably more than the kids will. I assume this is why it is getting so many harsh reviews.
