The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)
Great entertainment for the whole family
I watched this film back in the 90's and loved it then but wasn't sure I'd still feel the same watching it now (I was pretty young back in those days!). But I ordered the DVD set of The Gods Must Be Crazy I and II anyway and sure enough I still loved watching them both and so did the rest of my family watching for the first time.
When you first start watching it you might think it looks incredibly boring as it's done in a kind of documentary style. But don't let that put you off, bear with it and you'll soon realise that it's perfect for the type of comedy it is and you'll soon be totally lost in it (and in giggles!). It's based around tribal Africans' perspective on civilisation and how crazily 'supposedly' civilised people behave.
It's refreshing to have a film that appeals as much to adults as children and with no violence or swearing, just wholesome good fun. If you enjoyed channel 4's "Meet The Natives" then you'll absolutely love this!!
After the Dark (2013)
Interesting concept but ultimately not clever enough.
I gave it 6 stars because it was enjoyable to a degree, mainly because of a good set, not knowing quite what to expect next, and some good acting, primarily by Sophie Lowe playing Petra. However it doesn't really go anywhere and none of the points made along the way had any intellectual clout and instead they were all extremely wishy-washy, which is a shame as the concept, quality of acting and set had far greater potential than the script allowed. There were also a number of flaws that marred the film, non explanations and lame reasoning, but I won't give details here as it would spoil it for those who haven't yet seen it. Ultimately this was a film that tried to be clever but failed to apply any true intellect, however the journey was interesting enough to warrant a watch, just about.
Life of Pi (2012)
Ultimately fails
Great acting and great visuals let down by a poor story line that had so much potential but culminates in a lame and unsatisfying ending. I won't go into detail as astonishingly so many seemingly love it and I don't want to spoil it for those that do, but it fails to be profound or philosophically or spiritually enlightening, and whilst the mid part of the film is interesting, ultimately this is not one I enjoyed and the storyline left me feeling disappointed and annoyed.
The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997)
An underrated gem!
Old fashioned fun goofing around - a great, lighthearted movie. It may not appeal to everyone's sense of humour but if it does yours then you're in for a real treat. Highly recommended.
Adventure Boyz (2019)
Great movie for kids
If you're after a blockbuster movie then look elsewhere, but if you're after a simple, old fashioned, fun family adventure that makes you want to get off your seat and out into the open with some laughs along the way, then this is for you.
Highly recommended viewing for families.
