Fast Forward if the button to aim for!
This movie presents itself as a sweet family comedy with futuristic premise. This drivel encompasses every cliché in the family comedy repertoire, the writers did not even bother to recycle the lines!
Despite Adam Sandler's best efforts to make it palatable, the overused jokes, the stereotyped characters that could have been easily replaced by cardboard cutouts, and the cheap humour do more then murder the movie, they bury it 60 feet under as well.
This movie, in my humble opinion, should be watched in the same manner the lead character views his life, with the finger firmly on the Fast Forward button. It is a shame to waste one's time on watching this, it could be better spent on shoveling manure, the end impression is the same.
Someone Like You... (2001)
Romantic comedies for the masses should have no expectations
There is only one reason I would want to watch this movie - Hugh Jackman, the trailer advertised him half-naked so there I was accurate as an atomic clock when the movie started.
Ashley Judd is a versatile actress yet when given such ugly clichéd role to play she can only make the character slightly less appalling then written. The movie employs every sugared done-to-death cliché.
Strangely, the movie works. Mainly due to the actors, the very much underused Marisa Tomei is excellent and so is Hugh Jackman who has to play a cliché as well(anyone heard about reformed bad boys in a movie?). Ashley Judd is wonderful considering the bad lines she has to work with. So despite the lack of chemistry between actors, bad plot line that has more holes then a matrix-printer invoice it is a good romp to watch whilst doing admin or chopping up vegetables for a large salad.
This is pure oversweetened mass produced candy. We all know it is bad for our teeth but we cannot help by snatching a bite once in a while for some guilty enjoyment, as long as we don't overindulge of course:)
The Pacifier (2005)
Despite great efforts this movie is enough to put anyone to sleep
Alright, so we know that the storyline has been done to death before, we all know how the movie will end but it is usually the charm of the actors and a more modern approach to current family issues that enthralls us and makes us go and watch it.
The good points: The elder kids, the actors have done great jobs portraying two teenagers with a lot on their plate; Vin Diesel displaying the single man's troubles when faced with changing a nappy and the ever brilliant VP, the typical bully but played with such gusto.
The bad points: The story, the rest of the actors and the blind hope that Vin Diesel's star power will pull this inanity through in the box office.
The story's inconsistencies, troubled teenagers battle Vin's character yet go all putty when their Mom is coming home, the woman whose bad parenting created half of those problems in the first place! Faith Ford's bad acting, the perfectly put-together slim mother of 5, and Faith Ford's extremely bad acting.
The rest of the actors serve as a reminder that actor's unions still have some power since if they were replaced by mannequins no-one would have noticed.
This movie could have been a funny family movie instead it is a wooden dud which fools the audience and leaves a bad taste in their mouths'.
Diarios de motocicleta (2004)
South American movies at their best
It is very rarely that I would give a movie the highest score, but Motorcycle Diaries really deserves it. The beauty of South American landscapes is shown so clearly but it is the people of those landscapes that grab our attention as the movie shows the gradual change in Che. The experiences shown make us understand why, at least partially, a promising medical student became the celebrated revolutionary martyr we are all familiar with today.
It is not a movie about social issues or politics yet the humour and powerful story bring those issues to light without screaming political correctness. The two main actors' talent just shines throughout the movie with an excellent supporting cast. Another amazing feature although the movie is based on truth is that there is no glossing over the bad qualities of the characters, they are presented in a humorous and very realistic light. It really is a story about two friends who take a motorbike ("The great one") ride across South America during the fifties before they take their separate life paths and knowing their eventual fates does not take away from the story or spoil the enjoyment from watching it.
Wonderful scenery, great cast, moving story - all this elements together are rarely integrated in one movie. As the advertisements say it: "A movie not to be missed!" For once, they are right.
Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
Kingdom of confusion
Looking at this movie objectively, it has most of the things needed to make a great epic. Fair amount of historical accuracy, great male leads, beautiful scenery, multitude of military and historical consultants that do know their job. So why does the movie leave you feeling bored and sleepy throughout most of it's showing picking up towards the end where we enjoy a nice, lovely bloodbath?
The convoluted and complicated dialog that is given in small chunks left me wondering when will the battle scenes will begin to break the monotony. The priesthood of the time is shown to be completely corrupt and immoral whilst the Saracens are lambs for the slaughter by big bad Templars. Among other inconsistencies is the changes in Orlando Bloom's character without any explanations but things we are later told happened over time. How much time passes is actually unknown and we are left to guess the rest of the pieces to the obscure puzzle that is presented in the story as the narrative. The female lead is simply awful, the actress tried to play Cleopatra of the Middle Ages instead of the truly tragic victim of circumstance she was supposed to be.
Although the battles and the massive siege at the end are top notch the end of the movie is a welcome relief to a long confused story that despite the wonderful efforts of Orlando Bloom,Liam Neeson and Jeremy Irons left me and my friends with a sense of being taken for a ride, duped by the big names of the movie stars and the director. A movie worth watching for the wonderfully executed battles and Orlando Bloom with a beard, just go during the half-price night.
