Logan (2017)

Masterpiece

At the end of the day one of my favorite films. Self-contained and engaging, Logan is a gritty thriller that does best when it focuses on its titular character and his inner demons. The reluctant hero theme works well here, and reminds me of Terminator. Well done.

Great stuff

Gambling is bad for you, kids. But Adam Sandler is very good in this movie. VERY good. He is almost unrecognizable as the scummy jewelry salesman whose life is in complete shambles and a complete sham. I was hooked from the get-go. Not happy but a must see.

Solid B movie fun

Nothing groundbreaking here. But it's a fun waste of time. I enjoyed the 2 hours I spent watching a demon beat up monsters. It's absurd stuff but funny and entertaining. Hellboy is essentially 99 cent Deadpool, but there's fun to be had. Lower your expectations.

The best horror comedy
30 December 2019
For me this ranks as my #1 horror comedy. It's simultaneously scary and silly. The concept of a lethal hide and seek game is brilliant on it's own, but the film executes it perfectly. Samara is fantastic in the lead and there are plenty of laugh out loud moments. Perfect!

Absolute rubbish

Hardly any returning actors. That's a red flag. Thin storylines strung together to create what barely resembles a narrative. Easily the inferior sequel/prequel...whatever. Enchanted Christmas is actually my favorite, because of Tim Curry. Watch that one instead.

Wow

Ok this movie kicked things up a notch. Arguably the scariest movie I've ever seen. I couldn't watch it all in one sitting. Based on true events, which is terrifying. The unseen demonic forces at work here are the scariest part. This movie is terrifyingly subtle.

What a movie!

As an actor, I can appreciate the tension that goes into preparing for a role, which is perfectly portrayed here. The acting is stunning and the film reminds me of Whiplash, in a good way. A stunning, visceral nightmare.

Plays well to its intended audience

This is an Eli Roth film. I like Eli Roth, so I liked it. If you don't care for his style you won't be won over by this one either. It's pretty disturbing, since the plot is about teens getting infected with a flesh-eating virus. There's plenty of gore and tense moments. It's not boring.

Amazing show
15 December 2019
As a Mormon, I gotta say this show gets a lot of things right, at least cultural living in Utah County. While mainstream members do not practice polygamy, there are many similarities in belief and jargon here that are portrayed quite accurately. HBO clearly did their research. All in all, first-rate acting and writing and hardly a dull moment. Highly recommended for those who like to be challenged by their entertainment and perhaps even made a bit uncomfortable.

Breaking Bad is back!

I felt like no time had passed and things picked up perfectly where they left off. This was a nearly flawless film. I loved immersing myself back in this world. Aaron Paul is even better than before, and that's saying something. Yeah science!

Better Each Time
14 October 2019
This movie gets better with each viewing. For a movie about demons and dismemberment, it's pretty upbeat. While not as silly as Army of Darkness, this Evil Dead is still fun and full of twists. Be warned though, the practical gore effects are very disturbing.

Well this was a messed up movie even by my standards. I loved it. And it picked up steam as it went on. Very suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat.

MACGRUBER!

I remember watching the SNL sketch and was jazzed when I saw there was a movie coming out. This movie is BONKERS and is filled with offensive content from beginning to end. It's like Mel Brooks meets Seth Rogen and parodies action movies perfectly. Loved it!

It's violent but cool
29 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
When Rambo started piling up bodies I was at first disturbed. This is coming from a horror buff. But once he put in a cassette and played some groovy music it made the scene easier to watch. The film could have used more humor, but I actually thought it did a good job at illustrating how empty revenge is. Rambo just sits on a chair alone after he's done killing. Overall, this is a decent film that did make me think after it was over.

They spelled Clowns wrong

This movie definitely falls into the so bad it's good category. It's amazing that a movie about carnivorous clowns with popcorn guns ends up being so wildly entertaining. The maze at Universal was great too. Give this one a chance. Its fun!

Unsettling in the best way
21 September 2019
Great connection to the first. It is unsettling in the best way. It makes you think and scream. The opening scene was a bit much but after that it's a fun wild ride. Bill Hader steals the show. I actually enjoyed this more than chapter one and liked the slower pace.

Scary Good
17 September 2019
The Changeling is a classic, and its classy. The score is really great too. This film doesnt rely on jump scares or gore. It's all about building an ever increasing sense of dread. Amazing scary good haunted house flick.

Spidey vs. 'Merica!
3 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The new Spider-Man film, while exciting and cool, is actually worse than Spider-Man 3. I am a huge fan of the Spider-Man films, but this one simply bites off more than it can chew. If we stack TASM2 (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) against CATWS (Captain America: The Winter Solider), Cap actually comes out on top. CATWS is not a perfect film. It is loud and violent, and maybe overstays its' welcome by a half hour, but it is also tighter and more focused than it's competitor. The reason Cap works so well is because it follows only one or two story arcs and sees them through until the end of the film. Only once the loose ends have been resolved does the film leave a door open for the sequel. Spidey drops breadcrumbs throughout its' bloated 140-minute running time, and actually leaves you with more questions by the end instead of answers. The effects in CATWS are more practical, with the majority of the action scenes consisting of urban warfare that would make Jason Bourne proud. Spidey's action is a bit more jarring and inconsistent. It doesn't really fit with the amusing and moving scenes with Garfield and Stone that are few and far between. While the principal actors are good in Spidey, particularly Dane DeHaan, the film sacrifices emotion at the expense of explosions. I love explosions as much as the next guy, but they have to be justified or they are just plain stupid. Cap focuses more on character development and as a result you are much more invested in the story by the time the fireworks come into play. Speaking of story, it is so much easier to summarize CATWS. A brief summary of the film would probably look like this: "In this film Steve Rodgers confronts a corrupt government organization who is using an old friend of his as a brainwashed assassin." Done. Comparatively, TASM2 is about "Peter Parker's fading relationship with Gwen Stefani--I mean--Stacy, the growing conspiracy at Oscorp, the mysterious death of Peter's parents, Harry Osborne's rushed return and transformation into the Green Goblin, the completely unnecessary and "unrelatable" presentation of Electro--who has no justifiable motivation to kill Spider-Man, the shoehorning of The Rhino that bookends the film..." And the list goes on and on. The problem with Spidey is that it tries to do too much and trips at the finish line. You'd think Sony would have learned their lesson after Spider-Man 3. Three villains is just too many. I also thought that Redford, Jackson, and especially Anthony Mackie were much more compelling in Captain America 2 than the characters in Spidey 2. Of course, they had more material to work with. Ultimately, TASM2 seals its' own fate by failing to take a page out of Spider-Man 3's book, and Cap 2 succeeds by going back to basics and focusing on one story that (unlike Spidey 2) is actually concluded satisfactorily in the end. Captain America: The Winter Soldier all but exceeds your expectations, but unfortunately The Amazing Spider-Man 2 just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Do yourself a favor and skip the latter.
