The Comedy Jam (2017)
Really good actually...
Watching the first episode of this 1/2 hour comedy show will give you the vibe that it will be different. From Tiffany Haddish's awesome tribute to Tina Turner to Bobby Lee's *ahem* surprise end of his set if you are not singing along or just chuckling you may want to reevaluate your soul or your sense of humor or if you have one. I think Comedy Central has a hit on their hands with this one.
Phantasm: Ravager (2016)
Kind of a fun ride
Let me first start by saying if you are not a fan of the phantasm movies thus far you are probably not going to like this one and it helps to watch the others to understand where this one starts.
I like they way they continue the mostly vague origins of "The Tall Man" and how it skips around in time and dimensions, where you really don't know what is and isn't "real" but could all be "real". Reggie is the main player this time around and it mainly focuses on him and his trying to come to grips with something unfathomable and likely to result in driving him insane or just making it out alive.
On a personal note, I always thought this would have made a great television series bringing these guys to the small screen and not just in theaters or straight to video. I can imagine the cult following like that of Ash and the evil dead would likely eat this up, especially seeing the success of shows like The Walking Dead and Z-nation and the like that are very popular now days and have a rabid fan-base.
In summary, if you're a fan watch it. If you haven't seen the previous installments then you may wanna go back and catch up and binge them before watching this one. Have fun everyone.
Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)
New School Zombie Film 101
This seemed like it was just going to be another zombie comedy send up like Zombieland, and while it had a lot in common with that film it had its own legs too.
The main characters were just your average high school losers trying to live their lives, and being scouts didn't help their social status. Then all hell broke loose and a Zombie outbreak happened! Luckily they had met Denise a woman who helped them live through it and was bad ass at that, the John McClane (Die Hard) of this sleepy town.
If you haven't seen this gem don't miss out it is worth the watch,it is not a kids movie but if your 18 and up you'll probably laugh your butt off like I did. On a side note there needs to be a sequel/s to this it would be fun to see it revisited and the characters having to fight another outbreak.
Ash vs Evil Dead (2015)
This will add to the legend
*contains mild spoilers, if you have not seen the episodes you may want to watch before reading* If you have been a fan of "The Evil Dead" series like me for many years it has been far too long and somewhat disappointing *cough-remake sucked* that we haven't had the real Ash around.
That wait is finally over as we now have him back and all the over the top fun that comes with him. After watching the first episode of this epic romp of the imagination of the creators, it seems our man Ash is still living his life carefree, hiding out, and getting some action on the side. This is all well and fine except a night of partying may have brought this to an end. All of the sudden the Deadites reappear in visions to Ash and start breaking back into our reality. Now Ash has to either run away again or face up to his responsibilities and become the hero once more.
The way this first episode played out I suspect that Ash will not have to face the evil alone anymore, it seems that he will now have a team to back his plays. This is just speculation but if this is what is going to happen then I am officially raising my hand to become part of the Ash Army! If you have not seen this show yet you are missing out and will most likely regret it. There is not anything on TV like it unless they play an Evil Dead movie. I suspect that this show will have many seasons and hope that 10 episodes is not the norm.
Supernatural: Baby (2015)
Baby...
I do not usually write reviews for episodes but there was something about this one that just made me want to. If you haven't seen this episode yet turn back now and floor it, if you have you saw the same wonderful tribute I did.
The start of the show was a great view of how "Baby" came to be and gave acknowledgement to one of this series unsung heroes. This beautiful machine has carried and been carried just like the Winchester brother have done for each other since the beginning. It is just as much part of the family as their dad and in someways it has been the refuge in the storm for the boys and their father before them. It is an arsenal, a conveyance, and a comfort to just know she still runs even when beat to hell.
This episode was a fitting tribute and good story for the show, I hope the show goes another 10 years. Cheers boys keep playing those Bob Seger tunes and putting evil in its place.
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Well worth the watch.
This was a refreshing take on the modern western. I say modern western but to me it was a return and an evolution of those I used to watch with my grandfather when I was younger. It had to me aspects of "There Will Be Blood" and one of my all time favorite movies that also starred Mr. Kurt Russell "Tombstone".
The graphic nature of this film was realistic, and the attitudes of the characters were indicative of this time and place. It is definitely not a film for those weak of heart or who are easily offended by true accounts of how things were in our collective history. That aside the story had some points when it dragged but never to a place where you lose interest. The performances of the actors were of high quality and believable.
It is my opinion that if you have a craving for a good western along the lines of "Tombstone" or "3:10 to Yuma" and like realistic portrayals of rugged characters you should watch this diamond in the ruff.
Howl (2015)
Fun and a bit refreshing
I really like the somewhat fresh take on the lycanthrope genre that the story unfolds for us. I would not say that I spoiling really, but the way the movie presents the monsters and how they kill ( I mean come on "Werewolves" they are bound to bite and rip some people.) is a bit different from the normal. It makes me think of it as a 28 days later but for the howling set.
The action is a bit more gory than the average fare, and realistic ( well as realistic as it could be ). The characters are just everyday people thrust into a situation that most people wouldn't survive. You have the whole range from the reluctant hero that ends up trying to save the day to the self obsessed villain who wants nothing more than to save his own hide.
I'd really like to see a sequel to this movie although it stands on its own very well. As I mentioned before I think it could actually come into its own like 28 days / weeks later have. This movie could really start to garner a cult following.
Galaxy Quest (1999)
(Some Spoilers) Excellent Movie
I went to the theater to see this movie when it was first released mostly because I was a fan of almost the entire cast and their works. When I went the theater was packed and everyone had a wonderful laugh, that is why I could not understand when I heard the movie flopped. As a fan of Sci Fi, Comedy, Drama, and Action movies and TV this was a thrill ride and I hoped that it would receive a sequel but it has not thus far.
The scene where the little aliens started appearing and Sigourney's (Alien franchise) character started to comment on how cute they were, then Sam's started freaking out about how they were going to turn ugly and eat them was hilarious. I loved how Alan awakened his inner rage when his friend was killed and he led the crew on a rampage, that was a moving point in the film for me.
If you have not seen this movie you should definitely take a look it is comedy/sci fi gold. It is not really a spoof as much as it is an homage to the likes of Star Trek.
