Westworld (2016)
Commendable, but frustrating.
This show tries to tackle themes such as A.I., simulation theory, memory and free will which is extremely ambitious and and commendable. I give mad props to the show runners for going there, but the story and emotional impact really suffers. We get exposition dumps for us to understand the plot and a lack of connective tissue leaving me to constantly having to suspend belief.
How does Caleb know to pull the pearl from Delores after the EMP? Why doesn't Delores let Maeve and Bernard in on her plan? How is Charlotte able to paralyze Delores? What kills a host? How did Caleb commandeer that police chopper so easily? Just to name a few...
I think, by not setting the rules of this universe, the story tellers give themselves an out... But I'm always asking "WHY or HOW is this happening?" I don't think this show suffers from bad writing per say, I just think Nolan and Joy want us to focus on too many large themes at once while not focusing on the details. This makes for a very confusing, often frustrating watch.
When the Street Lights Go On (2017)
Wait, what?
This show starts off incredibly. Hooked by the time period, the acting, and the twists. Then it just falls off. It may be a symptom of this being a show that wasn't picked up by Hulu. It feels truncated in the last few episodes. I really felt like I missed something and we're left with a very anticlimactic ending.
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
Death by A Thousand Cuts
Game of Thrones is a cultural phenomenon that ends an era in TV entertainment. Up until now the writing has been, for the most part, very solid and it would always be a challenge to end this series in a satisfying way. But we've now come to a point where it seems the show runners aren't even trying to be clever anymore.
How does a naval fleet ambush two dragons? Then, you bring your remaining dragon to a meeting with Cersi who has more ballista's. Why in the world would you bring your LAST dragon after you watched he other one get shot out of the sky with those things.
Why didn't Cersi just end the war and kill Tyrion, Dany and everyone else just standing there? That would totally be in character for her.
Jamie takes Briennes virginity only to shatter her heart and destroy his whole redemption arc. Maybe he's going to kill Cersi??
And don't get me started on Jon abandoning Ghost. At least give him to Sansa. AT LEAST PET HIM BEFORE YOU DESERT HIM.
What is the point of Bran? What is the point of Jon?? Both do nothing.
To sum up.. the writing on these last couple seasons have been a result of the show runners backed into a corner. They did it to themselves, but they're doing a terrible job writing themselves out of it. It's lazy and everyone can see it. So many wtf moments. Hopefully this won't be the legacy for an otherwise incredible show.
House of Cards: Chapter 65 (2017)
Hanging on by its Fingernails
HoC started off wonderfully. I will go as far as saying I stuck with it enjoying each episode all the way through season 4. However, this show is now a prime example of how a network can keep a show in play after it's prime. Season 5 could have been a wonderful final stand for the Underwood's, but instead the audience is left with ridiculousness and an eye rolling cliff hanger.
Jason Bourne (2016)
I had two questions... Neither were answered.
Why is Jason Bourne back and why should I still care? I still don't know. This movie not only didn't deliver on plot, the action didn't even work for me either. I kept asking myself why things were happening hoping the movie would explain them to me, but it never did.
I called almost every twist, which is something I'm usually pretty bad at. I love the first three Jason Bourne movies (we'll not discuss the fourth one here...), so naturally I was pretty hyped to see this.
The ending is bad, the acting was meh, the characters were lame..It was a huge disappointment to say the least. Not really even rental worthy. See it if you want to further your Jason Bourne fandom, but be warned.
