Wonderful blend of social history and science
6 March 2021
This is one of the best Nova episodes ever! Great examination of a Black scientist in the early 20th Century. Blended with an account of Dr. Julian's struggles to pursue his career in Chemistry are wonderfully clear explanations of the chemistry principles involved in his research. The chemistry faculty and the descendants of Dr. Julian provide very helpful context for the important events in his life. Do watch this if you get a chance!

Great farce

Okay, it's a bit broad, but this movie is insanely funny. Maybe not great art, but a wonderful 110 minutes of fun.

Beautiful film about a father and son
10 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First, the film is beautiful. A memorable view of life in a rural Andes village, complemented by a wonderful score from Harry Escott. I have to take issue with the previous reviewer who lamented that there was no counter perspective to the homophobia portrayed in the movie. The artifact that the son, Segundo, creates in tribute to his father at the end of the film is one of the most powerful scenes I've experienced in a movie -- it has haunted me for days. It's clear that the son's love for his father is not compromised by his father's sexuality.

A charming comedy.
5 July 2011
This charming story describes the encounter between a young advertising executive (Sebastián Dahm) and a mysterious, and ghostly, blond woman (Carolina Fadic) on Avenida Kennedy in Santiago, Chile. She is the "rubia" (blond) of Kennedy. The film takes a Chilean urban legend from the 1970's as its starting point. In the legend, a beautiful woman in a white dress flags down drivers on Avenida Kennedy at night and asks for a ride. She gets in the back seat of the car, and when the driver begins to accelerate, the woman asks the driver to not drive so fast, then disappears from the back seat. The film adds a tale of early mythical figures in the forests of Chile as background, then describes the intersection of these mythical figures with modern times. The production values of the film are good but not excellent. Nevertheless, this is a wonderfully enjoyable film.
