Prime (2005)
stay away. bad writing and direction.
save your money. the fact that Ben Younger is allowed to write and direct films is unbelievable.
the dialog is so predictable and poorly written. the directing is so bad that the pacing of each scene is unbearable. this is film school 101 level with a budget. to cast someone as bad of an actor as Bryan Greenberg opposite Uma Thurman, not alone in the same film as Meryl Streep is unbelievable. Uma would try to act ( in spite of the direction ) while Mr. Greenberg had no charisma, and could produce no chemistry, not alone try to express any kind of feeling or emotion. that a studio actually bankrolled this shows why their numbers are down at the box office. stay away.
The Ballad of Jack and Rose (2005)
extremely disappointing, naively bad
this movie was naively bad.
it qualifies as poorly written and directed. the symbolism was extremely heavy handed and all plot movement was too heavily predicted. writing and directing was freshman "indie film" level. this film suffered from the "i am married to daniel day lewis and daughter of arthur miller" so therefore i get to make this film and get it distributed.
speaking of daniel day, i doubt if he would have considered this role if he wasn't married to rebecca miller ( the director ). catherine keener, who is usually interesting in contemporary films, was poorly cast. daniel day lewis, who is usually spectacular when he has a script and role worthy of his talents, suffered trying to carry the whole film.
the premise, however is interesting. it could have been a good film, in the hands of someone more talented.
