Obychnaya zhenshchina (2018)
What a pleasant surprise
I'm thoroughly enjoying this series and with two episodes to go, I'll hate to see it end. It's about as black as a black comedy can be but it very, very funny... laugh out loud funny!
The acting is superb, not one weak actor / actress in the cast & the storyline keeps you guessing how each scene will resolve.
Highly recommended IMHO.
Bron/Broen (2011)
Perfection
TV doesn't get any better than Bron in my opinion.
Great gritty stories, amazing actors (complete with flaws) and a wonderful sound track all come together in a tightly knit package.
The theme music for this series is stellar; earworm anyone?
I can't rate this series high enough and like a good book, don't want it to end.
Baby Driver (2017)
Don't over analyze!
First of all I'm not usually attracted to this kind of flick... I'm more a fan of dark 'who done it' crime dramas but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it... maybe it just caught me in the right mood?
This is one of those films that gets either fantastic or really lousy reviews & I always find myself drawn to those.
I find a lot of the reviewers who gave it low scores may have missed the point of the movie. Someone stated that it takes itself too seriously & as far as I'm concerned it's not doing that at all. It's more a spoof than anything else.
Some of the sound editing was very well done in the way that the sfx synced with the music. Sure that's been done before but it was very effective & besides, what hasn't been done before.
The best way to observe this is to turn off your brain's analytical mode, grab some popcorn & just enjoy it for what it is; a fun rollick about a group of people who aren't very well suited to each other out on a crime spree.
Men in Suits (2015)
Wow, was that ever bad!
I tried to watch this and was shocked by how bad it is. Everything about this flick is very low calibre: acting, sound, image quality, you name it.
The synopsis mentions it's about the trials and tribulations of a low budget director & I guess I was hoping for something along the lines of Ed Wood but with a smaller budget. I do know after watching the low budget movie 'Tangerine', which was shot on iPhones, that if you have talent then you can still make a valid & entertaining work of art despite budget and technical constraints.
'Men in Suits' reminds me of a film from a first year student at a film school... better yet, someone who has never studied film making at all; just borrowed a camera and knew enough to yell "Action".
In closing, may I just say that I tried to warn you.
Homo sapiens (2016)
Difficult to improve on this
I saw Homo Sapiens recently and have to say that I was spellbound from start to finish. I can't say anything bad about this; it was a great investment of my time spent taking it all in.
Apparently it took the better part of four years to complete & that's not surprising to me. The sound designer deserves major credit for his work... absolutely perfect in every way.
If anyone had told me the formulae for this work before I saw it, I would have said that the creators run the risk of losing their audience, but that was far from the case. It didn't lack anything at all. The power of just images and sound and the exclusion of narration and music was a bold step to take but it proved that it can be done if it's done well.
This is a very powerful movie / documentary and I think everyone should take the time to experience it. "Homo Sapiens" is one of the most thought provoking visual and audio statements that I have ever seen and I look forward to seeing it again and again. I honestly can't say that about many other movies. Now it's time to see what other movies this director has made.
