Secrets and Lies (2015)
This might be a premature review, but I had to stop watching half way through the second episode.
The writing of this series is horrible. I almost stopped after watching the first episode, but I kept hoping it'd get better. Sadly it didn't. If you have to patience to sit through the entire boring and annoying story line, go for it.
I'm not even sure where the story was leading, and I might never find out. I know good stories don't reveal themselves early, and you're in for a roller coaster ride full of surprises. However, the story itself needs to be interesting, realistic, and enough questionable cues should be revealed to keep you intrigued. For this story, none of that happened. If the writers intended for Ben Crawford to be the killer, then they're doing a darn good job of not showing any cues of his being guilty. He's portrayed to be an absolutely innocent man who is harassed constantly by this unprofessional cop who has nothing better to do than pinning the murder on him. She has no credible evidence, shows no intelligence in her investigative methodology, and personally I find her demeanor annoying.
In summary, the story is boring with no interesting elements, the dialogues are mediocre, the pace is slow, and the characters are awfully uninteresting.
Bates Motel (2013)
This show really messes with my head!
It takes a few days for me to shake off the creepy image of Norman and all of the psychological impact the story line has on my brain. That means it's a great story that lingers around in your head.
I don't think the story is 100% perfect, but it's pretty close. The part I like the least is how Norman's brother, Dylan, climbs up the ranks in his drug business. I like his character overall as a person, but he's shown very little intelligence and leadership in his job. A few dumb luck incidents basically pushed him up the ladder. My next least favorite character development is how annoyingly nosy Emma can get. Lastly, the Bradley girl was also uninteresting. I'm glad they killed her off. I hope they won't bring her back!
Other than those, the rest of the characters are awesome. They are creepy but yet believable in so many ways. The pace of the series is rather slow, but somehow the hairs on your back keep standing up as you go through the episodes, and you keep longing for more to see how things will turn out.
As much as I can't wait to see the next episodes that will come out on Netflix, I am a bit dreaded as well since I have trouble sleeping after watching this show :).
The Last Supper (1995)
Excellent storyline
This movie brings out a moral story that probably all of us have known subconsciously. And it does it beautifully. I can sum it up by using Norman's quote (one of the characters) toward the end of the movie: There are always extremists on both sides of the spectrum. And sadly, we can't achieve anything with those extremists. Those are the ones that make the most noise, but the decision makers are the moderates. Well I'm not sure if Norman can be considered a moderate (his speech makes him one, but his action at the end of the movie - poisoning all 5 of them - can be categorized as an extreme measure as well). But he ended up being the decision maker for this story. It's also karma in a way (what goes around comes around). One of the commentators for this movie says that "The film even concludes that's it's morally righteous to kill a right wing pundit if it prevent him/her from someday rising to the office of President." That is COMPLETELY the wrong intention of the movie. I don't think the movie even remotely endorses that idea. Having watched the movie twice, there's not one incident in the movie that suggests that. The movie brings out the irony of how extremists think. The group of 5 students think the victims they kill are extremists, while THEY are the extremists themselves without realizing it. And Norman, at the end, even though claiming he's a moderate, uses extreme measure as well by killing all 5 of them. He should have left that decision to be made by the police. I also love the humor of this movie. There are scenes that I feel ashamed for laughing because there are dead people in the scenes. The acting of the cast is great too. So if you are one that enjoys deep, intense storyline and actually WATCH the movie and understand what its intention is, then you will like this movie. This is one of the movies that I'm not hesitate to bring over to a friend's house, watch it, and discuss it.
Blind Justice (2005)
One of Ron Eldard's best performances...
Much has been said about the show itself, so I would not delve into the details of the show. I just want to direct my attention toward the performance of the cast, especially that of Ron Eldard's, who played detective Jim Dunbar. I am overwhelmingly impressed with his performance in this new series, an opinion I think few would disagree with.
In "Blind Justice," Eldard's role, Jim Dunbar, is a multidimensional and interesting character to watch. Dunbar was a successful detective, a lady man, and a husband to a gorgeous wife. Now adding to those traits are his determination, sense of authority, cool cockiness, and yes, sometimes insecurity. Soon enough he is drawing your full attention and making you worry about him, anxious to know what is going to happen next.... Eldard expresses all of those characteristics so beautifully...
As far as the story goes, I have to admit there are some unrealistic details (Dunbar carrying a gun), BUT I am willing to ignore those and concentrate on the more compelling aspects of the story that make it so wonderful!!! Can anyone name a movie/show that does NOT contain any unrealistic details? I don't think so. Even "reality" shows have improbable moments. "Blind Justice" is supposed to be a combination of drama, suspense, and action. All of those factors are what make it stand out from other traditional pure drama, pure action, pure cop shows! Give "Blind Justice" a chance! Tune in for one or two episodes, and see for yourself what an outstanding performance these actors/actresses are presenting!!!
