Tangled (2010)
Not your typical "waste of time" kids movie!!!
Took my 7 and 8 year old to see this movie the other night, I hadn't heard or seen much about it other than the movie previews played before all the other recent kids movies we've seen (which is about ALL of them!). I usually walk out of these movies with the feeling, whatever, the kids sort of liked it, it wasn't horrible, but could have been doing something else, etc.... Wasn't expecting too much from this one either but.... WOW!!!!!! This movie was one of the absolute best I've seen in quite some time. The animation and 3D was amazing!!! My kids loved the movie, and I loved the movie! An unbelievable 8.5 out of 10 (so I rounded up and gave it a 9!). The only recent (at least 3 years) kids movie I even consider this good was Toy Story 3, which had a better storyline but not as good animation/3D.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008)
Should be MANDATORY to actually see the movie before voting!
I agree with some of the previous reviewers - how can you rate a movie without even seeing it?!? Well, guess that gives us the right to rate THEM without even knowing them! I give those people a 1.5.
This is a KID'S movie and to rate it a 2 is ridiculous. It's not the best movie but it sure is much better than A LOT of recent kid's/animated films. My kids, 4 & 5, loved this movie and that's really my biggest requirement. There are many others where they were bored and wanted to leave in less than 30 minutes.
To the people voting it so low (especially ones who vote without viewing) - GET A LIFE!
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
DUDES, you must read.....
Guys, guys, guys. I'll be the first to admit I'm not an avid follower of the film industry and new very little about this movie before I saw it. In fact, I had no idea this was 100% a musical. I don't recall seeing any trailers and didn't read IMDb reviews before going. It was my wife's turn to pick a movie and this was the one. It was two of the most painful two hours of my life. The movie starts, the singing begins, and it never stops. I swear, at least 90% of the dialog is in song.
I'll also admit, I'm not a huge fan of Burton or Depp but I do like good guy movies. They've both done good movies, they've both done bad movies (this one included). I liked the "old school" Depp much better - Blow, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Donnie Brasco, etc. I liked Pirates but didn't like Depp's character. Seems like the same old repetitive character (POTC, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc). The people who have seen and written reviews on this movie are obviously the brain washed Depp/Burton cool aid drinking fanatics. They would give 10 stars to a Depp/Burton Old Navy commercial.
So, the movie - an annoying combination of Edward Scissorhands meets Moulin Rouge. Although, Moulin Rouge sucked much less - at least it was in color.
Anyway, do your duty and see it if it gets you some points towards a kitchen pass but be forewarned what your getting into!!! 3 of 10 stars
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Depends on your expectations...
Despite the extremely generous ratings scores, this movie is extremely average. Keep in mind the even JACKASS had a 8+ rating the first week on IMDb. The die-hards are the ones willing to stand in line to see this movie on opening weekend and will have a positively biased opinion when voting.
I saw this movie with one of those die-hard friends last night who scored VIP tickets for a showing in Denver (I wouldn't have waited hours in line to see this movie). I thoroughly enjoyed part I, very entertaining. I waited for Part II to come out to video and it took me 4 nights to finish it it was way too long and I had a hard time staying awake. Hollywood has a history of making Part III+ movies simply to make $$ but they are rarely intriguing endeavors (already we have seen mediocrity in Shrek III and Spiderman III). So I wasn't expecting much and that's exactly what I got with Pirates III. It was just 'OK'. The special effects were quite amazing, saving a limited storyline and lack of originality. I predict the IMDb score will settle just below 8 in the next several months.
