Jack Ryan (2018)
Sub Bourne
Without Wendell Pierce, James Cosmo and Michael Kelly, I don't think John Krasinski can carry this. His character is so one dimensional compared to Harrison Ford's version. A string of political assassinations and a nuke were teased but not delivered. Will keep Call of Duty types happy I presume.
The initial plot sounded interesting but the plot is stuffed full of holes - how does parking some planes on a runway get you close to driving across Europe in 7 days. I preferred the Harrison Ford version of the reluctant warrior. In the end it plays out like a sub Bourne/ Bond with fairly formulaic set pieces.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Awesome flying with double cheese in top but just Star Wars 4
Only watched for the planes and flying sequences which are excellent. So bored of the bar machismo and stereotypical character - Jon Hamm being particularly awful. You know how the whole movie will pan out. In fact the movie could just be a video game with loads of cut scenes plugged in. Some serious plane hardware on display which means I can give it 5 stars. However the whole mission just seemed to be a Star Wars rip off - trench, tiny target, fly casual. As with Avengers no feeling that anything bad is going to happen to anyone so you just have to sit back with plenty of beer and let it wash over you. Really don't get all the 10/10 reviews - this is not a classic movie.
The Man Who Fell to Earth (2022)
Started off well tanked pretty quick
The first two episodes were really good and Chiwetel Ejiofor is brilliant. However as soon as the action switches to London the whole thing just becomes more ludicrous. Stopped watching following the episode about human life - what a waste.
Yellowstone (2018)
Beautiful Montana lost in greed and warped honour
Thought I should be rooting for the Yellowstone ranch and protecting the beautiful countryside or a way of life but the pile of bodies is just too ridiculous. The writing is very good and Luke Grimes and Kevin Costner are brilliant. But I struggle to connect to any of the characters on any level. Not sure I'll bother with S4.
Update : tried S4 - had no empathy for a single character - just OTT hate and killing.
Got sick of : gritty C+W guitar starts - pans to corral - pretty girl sitting on fence - cowboy abruptly stops horse - rest of cast looking on trying to look amazed. Boring.
13 Hours That Saved Britain (2010)
Dull and lacking in detail
Uses a lot of Battle Of Britain movie footage interspersed with some boring anecdotes. Not much detail about the pilots, the planes, the decisions made etc.
The Orville (2017)
Seasons 1 & 2 very funny. Season 3 uurrgghh
It was great to have a send up of all things Star Trek but also including some great plots on moral conundrums. The characters were well thought out and the humour on point. For seasons 1 & 2.
What the hell is going on in season 3 is anyone's guess. S3 Ep 1 was excruciating.
Out goes humour making this now just a sub Star Trek cash in.
Watch seasons 1 + 2 but stop there - you'll have had the very best of it.
