Agatha Christie meets zombies!

Saw this at Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival - it's best described as an Agatha Christie type mystery with zombies! Really well acted, shot nicely and edited well to keep you guessing throughout. Good for horror fans and those who enjoy mystery/thrillers, highly recommended.

Widow's Point (2019)
Eerie Lovecraftian ghost story on unique location
14 September 2020
Lovecraftian ghost story with fine performances from Sheffer and young Kaelin Lamberson.

If you're a fan of ghost stories, you should enjoy this atmospheric thriller set in a haunted lighthouse.

Cleverly structured to include a story set in the present, interwoven with the historical hauntings of the location, it never delves too deeply into exposition, and focuses on Sheffer's descent into madness whilst researching his characters new horror novel.

Kaelin Lamberson gives a standout performance, and I didn't see the Lovecraftian ending coming until it was right on top of me! Recommended.

The Numbers (2018)
Super anthology of supernatural!
19 April 2020
Saw this at Horror On Sea FF and really enjoyed it - one of the best films I saw there. The short stories are all really nicely shot - I had one particular favourite in terms of writing, performances and general aesthetic - but they're all interesting enough to warrant a watch. Looks a lot more expensive than I'm guessing it was, and worth checking out!

Exit (I) (2020)
Good allegory for Brexit!
19 April 2020
Saw this at a fest and enjoyed it! It's a very well written, tongue-in-cheek allegory for the whole Brexit mess in the UK, and works well on that front. Low budget, but nicely shot and edited, interesting colour palette from the gaffer. Probably one for the slightly more intelligent audience due to the meaning behind it, but also plenty in there to keep most modern horror audiences happy as well. Well worth seeking out!

Bad Match (2017)
Nice morality tale for modern audience
19 April 2020
Caught this movie late one night on the Horror Channel, and it's an enjoyable way to spend your time. Not particularly scary in terms of jumps/gore, etc., but unsettling because of the well written script and great performance from the female lead. Nicely shot and edited, decent performances and worth spending 90 minutes on.

Nefarious (II) (2019)
Low budget home invasion thriller
19 April 2020
This British low budget home invasion thriller is one to stick with - the setup takes some time, but the payoff is worth the wait. Actor performances are pretty good across the board - script is well written and believable, but perhaps has one too many twists towards the end. Nicely shot and edited - the earlier scenes feel like something from a British social realism entry, and these, contrasted with the theatrically staged police interview scenes and hyper-real finale, it's an interesting way of telling the story. It's not like anything I've really seen before, so difficult to compare it with anything - but it requires concentration and a level of intelligence to piece together all the parts (by the audience). Not recommended for the casual horror fan, but it's well made and intriguing enough to warrant a watch if you like independent horror made by new voices.

Fantastic short with unique look & feel
13 September 2019
I was lucky enough to catch this intriguing short at a fest recently, and it really grabbed my attention. The look and feel has an air of the retro/Stranger Things vibe, but manages to feel fresh and bold at the same time. Morgan McLeod's performance is first rate, and the effects are done seamlessly. Imagery is strong in the film, and I highly recommend checking it out if you have the chance!

Rag Tale (2005)
Visually stunning satire...
23 August 2005
Set during the momentous U.S. election week of 2004, this satirical story follows the editor of The Rag (Graves) – a London newspaper - as he embarks upon an affair with the Chairman's wife (Leigh) and follows him as he tries to save his job over the course of the week.

With subtle side-swipes at the establishment, this film delves into the seedy underworld of tabloid journalism. Improvised performances from an established ensemble cast helps RAG TALE create a realistic world inhabited by ruthless, back-stabbing hacks, intent on their own advancement.

The frantic pace of a news room is conveyed by the editing style, which features many more cuts than usual, and with hardly a still moment, the camera flits effortlessly between HD and mini-DV, creating the type of realism you would associate with a fly-on-the-wall documentary. The stunning visuals of the film are complimented by an energetic score and exploratory sound-design. This is heightened by the improvised dialogue and sense of inter-character relationships that build from the start to their shocking conclusion.

More cutting and experimental than television shows which attempt to cover similar ground, RAG TALE convinces us that what we read in the newspapers is very often manufactured by an elite group of people who care more about themselves than correctly reporting the news.

A film for the younger audience, this is one that will leave you thinking.
