Wild Wild Country (2018)
Spoilers: Excellent unbiased documentary - fascinating use of legislation in both camps
Like many others reviewing this documentary, I found it excellent for the insight and unbiased presentation. So I won't repeat that type of comment. Instead I will add that I found this fascinating from two other points of view too:
a) how the incoming Rajneesh group used legal means (buying houses, land, using elections and democratic representation) to gain access to democratic rights (decision, police force, influence etc)
b) in response and out of fear, how far a small western community will go to "combat" such a perceived invasion, i.e. suspending normal election proceedures, voter registration, using obscure immigration laws and illegal means to "get them out" and harass the "new" community etc.
c) how bizar that the rich Rajneesh community (so warm in so many ways) chose to enter Antilope and the ranch area as hostile outsiders with so little consideration of the local residents, rather than try to befriend, enrich and thus create allies in the local community. It would have taken - and cost - relatively little (Just 5-10 rolls royces and 1 airplane!) and they could have radically changed the outcome. Had they seemed less as an invading force of alienation, and instead invested significantly in the locals and their community. who knows.... a scary and fascinating thought. This tactical failure of the Rajneeshes in my mind, was their undoing in Antilope and surroundings.
A fascinating, mind boggling documentary with great insight into "both"/many points of view. You sense the tremendous force of emotions unleashed, and in existence to this day. An excellent documentary, well worth watching.
The Family I Had (2017)
A brilliant and thought provoking documentary
This is a haunting and thought-provoking documentary that provides insight into an impossible situation a family is placed in after a tragic murder of one underage sibling by another. The documentary, in my opinion, is all the more interesting because it does not fall into the trap of trying to provide concocted closure where there can be none. I highly recommend it. Thank you to the family for sharing such awful and difficult thoughts.
Fargo: Palindrome (2015)
A great, subtle ending to a surprising series
Spoiler alert
I really enjoyed the ending which like the rest of the series had so many surprising aspects to it. Had it continued with confrontations and action it would have been banal. Instead it switches pace to a much more reflecting angle, wrapping it all up really well. I thoroughly enjoyed it all. Refreshing in its combination of extremely traditional and extremely untraditional characters. Everyone is losing their lives but some are dying happy and material conquest is not always a great path. Plain daily life is elevated to a source of profound joy.
In the midst of extremely unusual events very ordinary lives are being led. It is also great that the characters are being played by people who we all can relate to. They look like real people not plastic figures out of a beauty pageant. Their interest and beauty emanates out of their thoughts, morality and relationship to others.
