The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It (2010)
Much better than I thought...
I went in with fairly low expectations but I was actually laughing at times. It did drag a bit in the middle. The humour is definitely on the spoof/monty-python sort of level - which is the intent.
Not sure this is 1st or 2nd date movie material but cheap easy humour. This film is definitely aimed at the teenage/guy crowd but there were some clever bits. Not only did the film include the names it was spoofing but several others as well.
Don't go in expecting a high-brow film, if you're in the mood for mindless and easy comedy give it a go. A very surprising 7/10 from me was expecting a 2-3 out of 10.
Desperation (2006)
Could have been halfway decent
Though it was a made-for-TV film the film was genuinely creepy for the first half (I've seen hundreds of horrors). As is often the case with most horror films it started to fall apart the further along it went.
The problem here wasn't necessarily the plot per se but the never-ending proselytizing that started. I have nothing against religion but this felt like it was written by some sort kooky right-wing Christian fantastic. The whole god thing got ridiculously stupid and imo took away from what could have been a decent film.
I give it a 4/10, the first 50 minutes was absolutely solid ~8-9/10, the second half worthy of a 1/10. Never seen such a rapid turnaround in focus midway through a film. It was like two directors made it.
If you're extremely Christian you'll love this film. Otherwise, I recommend another horror.
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Could have been much better
As with most films the book is far better than the film adaptation. There were some things going for this film namely the costumes and scenery which were excellent.
For me the film felt about 30-40minutes too long, if they had lopped off a chunk it would have felt far less staid. The acting wasn't top notch, I never felt pulled into the story. Also, I felt the character development wasn't strong enough. The antagonists just didn't come across very antagonistic. In fact throughout the film none of the characters really told their stories too well. It was easy to understand the movement of the film but it just wasn't anywhere as deep as the book.
All in all, give it a go if you want to see how it was adapted to the screen otherwise I would skip it. The period set/costumes were excellent, I just found everything else pretty mediocre my score a 4/10.
Barfuss (2005)
Germany's "Rainman"
I thought this film would be one of those tried and true romantic comedy genre sorts. And the major underlying theme in the film was indeed romance and comedy but it didn't feel rehashed or trite.
Certainly the story isn't very deep but 95% of the films out there aren't deep, we watch them to escape into a story. Barfuss weaves a sweet story that has laugh out loud bits mixed in with some really touching moments.
I would most compare this film with Rainman, definitely not as good as Rainman but the story is similar.
Anyway, if you're looking for a date film, or just in the mood for a good laugh give this German gem a go. Regards, Nikki
August Underground's Mordum (2003)
Most offensive film I've ever seen.
I gave a mark of 10/10 not because this film is an artistic masterpiece but because it was truly the most offensive film that has graced my eyes.
Truthfully, I didn't really know what to expect from the film someone just said watch it. It seemed very realistic with the jerky digicam movements a la Blair Witch style.
The shear audacity and incredible violence perpetuated on others by three young adults is really beyond words and is imo vile. The film does a great job of shocking the senses completely. Imo, if one watches this film and doesn't feel dirty afterwards I think something is wrong. SPOILERS - There are three scenes of particular violence and pornography - a couple severely beaten kept in coffin like boxes are brought out, the woman is raped, the man is made to cut off his penis (the entire thing is shown). The next scene is in some basement, a man has been stabbed multitudes of times and lays naked, dead, shackled on the floor. There are two women that are made to eat the vomit of one of the perpetrators then to fondle each other. Then one of the women has her belly slit open and a guy perp proceeds to have sex with the open belly wound. The third scene is worse and I will let any of you still interested in watching this sort of film have at it.
I cannot say I enjoyed the film, I cannot believe I watched it but I must say the film did shock beyond anything I have ever seen before. And so for this reason and this reason alone the film gets a 10/10.
