On Halloween (2020)
A very generous 3.
Everything about this movie just feels bottom of the barrel. The story is awful, the acting is even worse, and the dialogue feels dubbed in. No matter where the actors are, all the dialogue comes in at the same volume, feeling unnatural. The villain is laughable but at least he took an acting class or 2.
"The name's Boo, how do you do?"
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Don't understand the hype...
The main problem with this movie is that it just feels too out of place. Who is this really for?
It takes place in a Gotham that feels absolutely nothing like Gotham. Did Suicide Squad not take place?
Margot Robbie is great as HQ but this movie gave her an absolutely terrible story arc that was something you have seen in better movies, many times.
And the Birds of Prey, the gang who gets together 15 minutes before the credits roll, some cringe dialogue is involved in their escapades.
Overall the movie is disappointing and follows DCs trend of underwhelming super hero movies. Shazam is still easily their best outing.
Underwater (2020)
Fast Pacing Helps a Mediocre Movie
This movie fits the word mediocre perfectly. It doesn't do anything that great nor does it do anything that bad. Decent acting from most of the cast. Weird comedic timing from TJ Miller where most of his lines come off unnatural or just don't land. I liked the pacing of the movie, even the fact that there was close to no exposition. You pretty much know just as much as these characters and they are all likable enough that you don't want anyone axed. Fun watch, over quick.
The Grudge (2019)
The grudge on fast forward.
I went into this movie with pretty low expectations, coming off of seeing the awful Black Christmas remake. The perks, good acting, good atmosphere., good gore. The negatives, everything else.
The Grudge 2020 felt like someone pressed fast forward through the script. Present time, past, rinse and repeat. Not much substance to really have you invested in any of the characters or plot. None of the characters had enough screen time or development to really have you care all that much.
Decent night at the movies for what is a flick I won't be watching again. A generous 6/10 because I liked the cast.
Hell Fest (2018)
Top dog out of all the "horror fest" movies this season.
So far I have watched American Fright Fest, Blood Fest, and Hell Fest. This film stands out in positive ways while the others don't.
The plot of the film was simple, and straightforward. Typical slasher stuff with the supporting cast filling cliche roles to a tee. This also happened to be a flaw because of the lack of background story and explanations on some characterizations.
The death scenes were fun and not too overdone which was refreshing. No cheap CGI or offscreen imagination kills.
Another complaint is that it took a while to get started and the ending felt rushed a bit. While feeling a bit hollow, this film is worth a watch due to its fun aesthetic and atmosphere and decent acting. 'Tis the season!
