MacGruber (2021)
Gratuitous and crude
I'm giving up on this series after 3 episodes. I don't get why it's so gratuitous and crude, is it necessary? I'm sure there are some viewers who will enjoy this but in my opinion it goes too far. Will Forte can be funny but just like on "Last Man on Earth" he pushes the boundaries of what's acceptable.
Cloverfield (2008)
Rob, Rob, Rob!! We gotta stop using the hand-held!!
This movie made over six times what it cost to produce but as far as I'm concerned, fell short of expectations. I know, I know, it's rated over 7/10 on this site but I am giving it low marks for two reasons: First and foremost is the use of the hand-held camera. I can't believe that filmmakers still think that it's original or artistic to film movies in this way. It may have been a novel idea when The Blair Witch Project was released but it's overstayed it's welcome. It's nauseating and detracts from the story!! I found myself concentrating more on the annoying camera work than on the movie itself. The 2nd reason for the low marks is due to the acting....it was poor! I'm sorry, I'm sure the actors tried but they didn't succeed. This movie needed a couple of more established, seasoned actors to motivate the lesser known cast members.
I like movies about creatures or monsters but one of the things I noticed is that we don't get too many close-up shots. I want to be able to take a good look at the detail (or lack thereof) but am so often disappointed because the shots are too dark or too fast moving. I guess I am little too fascinated by special F/X.
The box office numbers for this movie were purely due to the hype surrounding it's impending release as well as a decent marketing campaign. I truly believe it could have made twice what it did if it was shot the old fashioned way. Too bad they didn't shoot both ways and let the audience pick which style they preferred. It would have made for a great DVD or Blu-Ray release with 2 versions of the movie in one package. I'm sure there will be more movies shot in this style and the good thing is that we have a choice to watch them or NOT! Oh and if anyone knows what kind of battery Hud was using, I'd really like to know because I've never seen one last that long. Regards.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
It needs an ending!
I am not a big fan of the Cohen brothers, in fact I'm sure they have as many fans as they do non fans. I see that many reviewers rate this movie at either end of the scale. I had heard from family and friends that they didn't get it or that it was a very strange movie. I decided to give it a chance and see for myself. Honestly, I don't know how it won as many Oscars as it did. I guess if it had ended with some closure or if we had some explanation as to whom Anton Chigurh was and what his role in this was other than a psychotic killer. What about the man behind the desk, who is he? For a while I actually thought that Llewelyn Moss was going to come out of this alive but that ended quickly and uneventfully. If I gave this movie a 5/10 it's only because of the acting which was good. I think I will avoid future Cohen Brothers' movies as I don't seem to get them. People buy designer clothing because of the name but that doesn't mean it suits everyone.
Prep & Landing (2009)
A Christmas special worthy of the Holiday!
I went into this thinking I would end up watching another boring animated Christmas special but I was surprised. I actually enjoyed it and while I can see why one reviewer thought it was militarized, it's still better than a lot of the animated specials I've seen in the past few years. Yes, we should leave the military out of it and stop prepping the kids for war! There were no angry wolves trying to eat the characters and the humour was not aimed at the adults as is so often the case in animated features these days. I guess having John Lasseter as executive producer helps. I grew up on Frosty, Rudolph, The Grinch and now that I think of it, they also had some darker elements to them but they are and continue to be classics. I don't know if this one will be a classic but the animation is top notch and kids are not fooled by cheap imitations these days.
Stargate: Atlantis (2004)
Say it isn't so!!
I've been reading online that the show has been cancelled! I've been watching Stargate Atlantis from the beginning and while I was bit hesitant to watch a spin off of the original, I found myself enjoying it. Over time it got so that I wouldn't miss an episode and really looked forward to new ones, waiting for each season premiere in anticipation. This is a very good series and the characters were very likable. There were some disappointments along the way when it came to cast changes as in the Dr.Beckett character but in the end it all worked out. As much as I liked Dr. Weir, I would have kept Samantha Carter in charge. Richard Woolsey was a bit of a confusing character right from the beginning (SG1)but he worked out fine too. I wish that the show were to be picked up for more seasons but I'm not holding my breath. I see that there is a TV or straight to DVD movie on the way, I guess that will have to do.
1408 (2007)
Thoroughly enjoyed it!!
I've never read a Stephen King novel (I don't read many novels anyway!)but I've enjoyed many of the movies based on them. I can't say whether or not the book was better but I can say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. There were many Stephen King based movies that have disappointed me so I'm glad to say this isn't one of them. It may have been a bit slow at times and I wouldn't call it terrifying but if you like Stephen King stories, you should see this movie. There are a couple of nice twists too! John Cusack is one of may favorite actors of his generation, he shows a wide range of emotions and does it very well! My vote would actually be 8.5/10 but since I couldn't pick 8.5, I picked 9. I hope that more Stephen King novels are made into movies and done as well as this one. The special effects were very good too! One thing I'd like to say to the people that give this movie 1 or 2 out of 10, you're in the minority. If you love Stephen King's novels, the movies will probably never live up to your expectations so rating the movie so poorly doesn't serve anyone. Take a couple of days to cool off before you vote!
The Monster Squad (1987)
Good mixture of comedy and Classic Horror characters - Dracula, Frankenstein and others.
I was 26 when I first watched this movie while babysitting my nephew. We both had a lot of fun and every now and then we reminisce about it. It's just the kind of movie I really enjoy as it blends horror and comedy. You have your good guys and bad guys with some of them saving the day and it should appeal to the younger kids because of how brave the characters are. What kid wouldn't want to save the world! It's not scary,(it may be for the younger children) but if you enjoy movies like Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein and Love at First Bite among others, than you'll have a good time. I really hope it finds it's way to DVD so I can buy a few copies to give as gifts to some of the younger kids for them to enjoy as my nephew and I did. I want a copy for myself and if you're young at heart, you'll want one too!
