Fallout (2024– )
10/10
Best series in years
14 April 2024
I really enjoyed fallout. The acting is great, the story unfolds gradually right up until the last episode. Lucy is a great character she retains her goodness even though she gradually does worse and worse things.

Maximus is a great Baddy/goody.

His character is not that likeable, but he kind of becomes a better person through the season. The ghoul is a great baddie and his cowboy vibe is a great addition to the show.

I wasn't able to predict much of the story. There were surprise twists but it was still believable (in a post apocalyptic scenario).

With three storylines unfolding at the same time it keeps you engaged.

I really hope there are lots more seasons.

The Famous Five (2023– )

Good fun
5 April 2024
I really enjoyed this series. Unlike most of the other reviewers, I didn't grow up with a previous '60s version and, although I did read Enid Blyton books as a kid, I never read the Famous Five so I had no expectation.. I thought it really nailed the feeling of 1960s kid's shows in general and adventure books like the "Boys Own" series.

The stories are uncomplicated, the villains and the goodies are exactly that. If you want something thought provoking and insightful, then watch something else. If you want to watch a good fun show that evokes stories from yesteryear then you'll enjoy this show.

Not making sense
1 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the walking dead until Rick and the other major characters were killed off and I thought this show would start from when we thought Rick was killed. Instead it's like an unrelated show.

Rick cutting off his own hand is an insane thing to do. He's safe and being treated well yet he's so fixated on escaping that he's happy to die. The only way it contributes to the plot is to show that he has gone beyond desperate and into insane.

And we all know that he didn't meet Michonne until after the zombie apocalypse started so I don't know what to make of the park bench scenes.

And some of the scenes have little nonsensical things like when the South African woman is giving him a pep-talk in his bedroom and then smashes a glass on the wall. Why on earth would she do that??

I'll watch another episode but it's not looking hopeful.

Must have been written by someone born after the '80s
27 January 2024
I'm 30 minutes into episode 1 and it is so incredibly unrealistic that I think someone younger than 40, who did no research, wrote it.

So many other reviewers are saying things like "it took me back to the 80s" .... no it didn't. Australian kids didn't have names like Gus, Eli, and Titus in the 80s, they had names like Stephen, Peter and Robert. The cane wasn't given with a walking stick on a bare arse, you've got to go back to the 1930s for that. It was just a piece of lawyer cane on the hand and the maximum they gave was six strokes. The school bully is an Asian??? There were almost no Asians outside of Sydney, and even in Sydney they were limited to Chinatown. I'm 60 years old, I grew up in Queensland, and didn't see a real life Asian person until I went to Chinatown in Sydney in 1979. I lived in Sydney in the late 80s and like I said there were almost no Asians outside of Chinatown.

Public schools did not have counselors, even today very few public schools have a counsellor.

Even the way they pronounce their words are wrong - no one pronounced Vietnam like Vietnarm back then, it was Vietnam as in rhymes with bam. Not even the hairstyles are 80s.

A kid who doesn't speak is going to a public school??? In the 80s he would have been sent to a special school.

The cars are the only thing 80s about this show. As for the story, well I'm not really seeing one yet. I'll give it to the end of this episode but it's not looking hopeful.

A comedy ??? More like a soapie.
9 November 2023
I dived in and started with episode three so I could get an idea of whether I'd like it and, if I did, then I'd go back to episode one.

I didn't see any attempts at humour, it's like watching Neighbours or Home and Away.

It's a fictional town, meaning towns in Australia are not even slightly like this. I grew up in a remote Far North Queensland town of 900 in the 1960s and 1970s. The thing is, there are several large population centres in North Queensland like Cairns, which, even in the 1970s had 50,000 people, there's also Innisfail, Townsville, Mackay, Mareeba etc. So no town is more than a few hours drive from sophisticated facilities and putting a body in the bar fridge wouldn't happen AND it is illegal. And the hardware store in a ramshackle shed ?? - there'll be a Bunnings (a huge hardware chain) less than an hour away. It's just too far out of reality. It is an attempt to make a show for foreign viewers portraying Australia as severely backwards - third world level backwards, and full of idiots.

Embarrassed that crap like this came from Australia
16 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm truly embarrassed that crap like this came from my country. If others like it, good for them but don't make comments like "great Aussie humour". There's nothing Australian about the style, nothing was funny and I couldn't even pick which parts are supposed to be funny. When Sean Penn is cooking on the morning show with Karl Stefanovic and they started dancing.... WTF ??? Was that supposed to be funny because it made no sense ???

I only made it as far as the 'forced to do gay stuff ' section in episode 1 when they're all nude and tied up. Next thing they're all between each other's legs and stuff. Why ??? Is that supposed to be funny ??? If so, why would it be funny ?

It is truly bad.

Odd
25 August 2023
This is an odd series designed to show that aboriginals were worthy of admiration by modern first world standards, because apparently that is the only worthy measurement. Aboriginals, compared to Europe or Asia or the Middle east, were not sophisticated at all, they were the last stoneage culture. And this thing about the oldest living culture .... how could that be true?? All Anthropologists agree that, due to the overwhelming amount of archeology, that the human species originated in Africa, andf there are still African tribes living their hunter gatherer lifestyle today. There's archeological evidence of humans in Europe dated to 900,000 years ago. Are european cultures still continuing?? I'm pretty sure they are. Every culture on the planet went through the hunter/gatherer phase, Stonehenge was built while britons were hunter/gatherers ! Most parts of the world, like China and Europe kept on developing technology while Aboriginals stopped at the point where they were able to survive.

Barry (2018–2023)

Really enjoyed seasons 1 and 2
23 July 2023
Barry is a great show, the characters are really good and all contribute to the show even though their characters are strong with their own story. Noho Hank is a really good character and the acting is great throughout. I would have given it 10 stars if it wasn't for season 4.

Seasons one and two drew me in because of the humour - a hit man enrolls in an acting class. The very premise itself is ludicrous but due to the great acting and script it works. Season 4 however, has none of the humour and Barry's likeability is gone. The period when he's in hiding with Sally is drawn out for too long and becomes boring.

I even started fast forwarding through little sections.

Losing the humour means the essence of what made seasons 1 and 2 so good, is gone. And the ending is sad. Season 4 is a drama but not a very good one.

Death Proof (2007)

Yawn
9 April 2023
It could have been really good. I really enjoyed the start with the pseudo '70s movie ads and then when it actually starts with the '70s style music, cars, and vibe, I was looking forward to watching the rest. Also, the humour like modern cars in the background and mobile phones, quickly becomes apparent. However, thats pretty much it. It's a 2007 film that I never heard of. I saw it on Netflix and thought it looked like fun. It's like Tarantino had the idea of a parody of low budget, unheard of, unwatched, crap, '70s film, but instead of a parody, he just made a low budget, unheard of, unwatched, crap, '70s STYLE film. I watched 40 minutes of boring chit-chat and then gave up. This is why I never heard of this 2007 film. It had so much potential, all it needed was a story, a plot and dialogue that had a purpose other than filling time.

Watchable
15 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I think the characters in this film are a bit confused. Like when Don wardaddy bullies the new young soldier and forces him to commit murder and then 5 minutes later kneels down with a pained look on his face. Which one is he ?... a vicious bully and murderer or caring father figure. You don't get soldiers ready to fight in combat by forcing them to commit war crimes. I spent 2 years of my life in total in Afghanistan. I saw a lot and this is unrealistic beyond all the stupid scenes like anti-tank artillery inflicting a direct hit from 50 mtrs on a Sherman tank which doesn't even damage the tank slightly. It's all been said by others how cliched this is, the teasing of the new guy - going through his belongings when he first arrives, making him clean the remains of the soldier he's replacing off the seat he will be sitting in. Yep we've got the message, Americans are war criminal ass holes, or wait! Was there also a message about the brutality of war ?

Why set it in the '80s ?
24 December 2022
This is definitely watchable it's as good as any other crime drama but why set it in '82 and then make almost no effort to set it in '82? We see the female police detective in ep 1 wearing a suit with trowsers. You definitely didn't see women wearing those in '82. I have not seen even one guy with long hair. Anyone over 30 at that time was still in '70s fashion with side burns and moustache and ties. The ONLY concession they seem to have made to the era is landline phones, cars and pagers.

If you read the description before you watch it, you expect '80s setting so it's disappointing. Other reviewers have asked "why was it cancelled so fast?" I think this setting failure is the main reason.

Bad !
23 November 2022
This show is terrible. It's like it was written by a 10 year old boy. I think some of the 'humour' is based on a USA/Canada thing which, if you're not from North America (like me) you're just not going to get. Every character Mike Myers plays has all the Austin Power quirks, he obviously thought that because the Austin Powers smile was funny once, it'll be funny a million times. Him playing so many different characters isn't inherently funny and serves no purpose. The 'jokes' are obvious yet the characters sometimes emphasize them .... just in case a moron didn't get it.

If it wasn't for all the swearing I might suggest it be R rated - restricted to under 10 year olds.

The Outlaws (2021– )

mostly a great show, very enjoyable
15 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I quite enjoyed The Outlaws but one aspect I found a little questionable. Thrown together are 6 well meaning and good hearted people who've committed misdemeanors and one guy who robs a crime gang at gunpoint and then holds a gun to the face of and threatens to murder one of the 6. Its like they accidentally edited together two different tv shows. And then 5 of the good hearted people (I assume, as I'm only up to episode 5) risk everything to help the serious criminal. That much was not credible but from there it got a lot better. I'd say it was a feelgood show mostly although there are funny moments. I really enjoyed it.

Last Light (2022)

watchable but implausible
11 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed watching this series but, like so many other movies and series that are being made now it is full of stupid plot devices.

You know the old scene device where the goodies kill all the henchmen but when the ringleader is cornered, they forgive him only to be betrayed ? This show is full of those. Like when the daughter is visiting Owen in hospital and sees the killer walking to the hospital entrance, she finds Owen and then they run ... you guessed it, to the entrance(for them, the exit) gee, I wonder what will happen ?? Maybe they'll come face to face with the killer. Yes of course they do.

Or when Andy is studying the data in ep3 and says "I think its a bacteria" then we find out that he invented the bacteria years before - but it didn't occur to him from the preliminary data that it matched the effect of the bacteria HE invented ??

The most obvious problem though is an oilfield in the middle east detects a problem with the oil and literally the next day, all over the world cars are bursting into flames and electricity generating plants are stopping (even though they are ALL fueled by hydroelectricity, coal or nuclear) - so the contaminated oil was refined, shipped all over the world to international ports, sent to petrol stations and into the cars in one day ????

Even good shows have implausible elements, this one is still enjoyable, you just need to overlook a bit more than others.

Watchable, but the same old tropes
9 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The same old tropes are employed - NASA currently employs stacks of qualified, trained astronauts but instead they use a disgraced ex-astronaut who hasn't been near NASA in 10 years. They're great at improvising in a crisis ie there are no serviceable rockets available so they get an old space shuttle from the museum AND transport it to the base AND get it ready to fly in one day. Even though though the earth is about to be destroyed and they are about to launch a space shuttle, they send the staff home and launch with 2 control room staff. Oh, and even though it's a currently operating rocket launch base, the only space suits they can find are 50+year old Apollo suits. Apart from that it's totally believable !

Overacting rubbish
13 July 2022
I didn't like this at all. The acting is terrible. So much physical overacting. The main character is like Jerry Lewis at his silliest in a serious movie. I have watched other Korean made movies and the acting was good. I don't know why this got any good reviews.

"The Joker" is a misleading title
9 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I'll start with the bad. The connection with "The Joker" that we all know from Batman is very weak. If it didn't have Thomas Wayne appear a couple of times, there would be no indication.

He DOESN'T become a criminal mastermind. It's just about a mentally ill man who murders some people and ends up in the mental wing of a prison. He doesn't show any capability of being a crime boss or mastermind, just a slightly dumb, insane killer.

It's very slow, at 1hr 20m, I started thinking "is anything else going to happen? All that happens from there is he kills two more people and gets caught.

It's only good point is that Joaquin Phoenix does a really good job portraying a mentally ill, pathetic killer.

If I wasn't expecting something from the Batman universe I might have enjoyed it more. They should have left the waynes out of it and called it Killer Clown !!

Poorly researched, full of American Vietnam war cliches
7 May 2022
I am an Australian former soldier, I served in Afghanistan and Iraq and I'm a history buff and know a bit about the Battle of Long Tan. Just in the first 10 minutes there is so much bullshit. Even the written preamble at the beginning was wrong. It was not a civil war , nth and sth Vietnam were each sovereign countries. 6 RAR had been there for 2-3 months and HAD seen combat. Australian soldiers smoking and drinking beer DURING a battle??? A Lieutenant refusing to get up during an attack because he's playing poker ?? Officers should be addressed as "Sir", not by their rank (but every war movie gets that wrong). A Lieutenant Colonel having to tell a platoon commander who's in charge ??? The Australian army had the highest kill ratio in Vietnam precisely because this rubbish DIDN'T happen. The movie writer watched too many American made Vietnam war movies.

Bad
22 March 2022
Not sure what type of movie this is .... other than bad. If it's a comedy then it's not funny, not even once. If it's a drama then it's not serious enough. My guess is that they tried to make a comedy but even a bad comedy will get at least a few chuckles, this is just flat and lifeless.

The plot was weak as hell, he's walking across the US to deliver a bible, you know the one - love your neighbour, turn the other cheek - and he'll kill anyone who tries to stop him godammit !! It was watchable and post apocalyptic scenarios are often good but this one missed the mark.

Anti American, selective and fabrication
10 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As my title suggests this is just an anti American film selectively presenting information and fabrication. For example, he shows on a map that the USA has 4 military bases in Australia. This is false, I am ex-military and the USA has no bases here. We host 2500 US Marines on an Australian base in Darwin. This has only been since 2012 when we accepted 200 US troops on a base built in 1989. So if he has lied about this, how accurate is his map of US bases in the rest of the world ? The Naval base in Jeju Island South Korea is also not a US base, it is a south Korean base. He talks about the US "invasion" of Okinawa in WW2, but seems to have forgotten that it was a Japanese military base, during a war started by Japan and that Japan killed 15 million civilians between 1915 and 1941 in China and other Asian countries - and more during the war. There are many more fabrications and gloss overs of China's atrocities within China and bullying behaviour to Australia, the Philippines etc.

I didn't like this show. I found the main character, who is supposed to be a special forces war veteran not credible. I may be biased as I am ex-military, but I thought he was a weak character and I just could not get engaged in this show.
