Civil War (2024)
10/10
Perspective of a US Expat living in Spain
15 May 2024
Before starting my review, I encourage everyone to read the review by the Former FBI agent. As stated in his review, this is a VERY IMPORTANT film. It is presented in a timely fashion (elections) and presents what COULD (but hopefully won't) happen in the US. Focusing the story on the reporters was brilliant as it makes the film an anti-war movie rather than directly commenting on current politics in the US.

Spain went through a civil war nearly 100 years ago, and the scars from that war still haven't healed. 40 years of rule under the dictatorship of Franco followed the end of the Spanish Civil War. During that time many loyal Republicans (the democratically elected government in Spain before the war) were jailed or executed, Republican money was worth nothing and homes and real estate were stolen from rightful owners by the mere accusation of helping the elected government. Recently, the VOX party has emerged in Spain (with the help of the right-wing in the US) and is trying to move the country back to those times. I would encourage Americans to read books on the Spanish Civil War if this movie moves them. More importantly, I hope the movie moves people in the US to vote intelligently in the upcoming election and get involved. The rest of the world doesn't want a civil war in the US! DON'T LET IT HAPPEN!

Sometimes a bit slow, but addictive. Loves the music and intro
19 August 2023
Maybe my favorite thing about the show is the music and the introduction with blurry home video that portray the family when the children were small. I would normally click over this part, but in this case the music is totally captivating. The show presents a dystopian family with many issues. The acting is excellent, the characters are mostly unlikeable, but the writing and the chess game that is high level finance is admirably presented. An added plus is the luxurious places in which the series is screened, giving the viewer a taste of what it is like to be one of the 0.0001%. It was interesting to try to guess how some of the negative things happening in the story might be used by one character to move him/her self into a better position in the family hierarchy. Maybe the only downside to the series is the lack of a serious violent incident as one might expect in a dysfunctional family.

Lincoln (2012)
10/10
Great Film, Daniel Day Lewis excellent, Oscar well-deserved
1 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Watched this movie on HBO in Spain, with my wife, who is Spanish. Her first surprise was the resistance of the democratic party to the 13th amendment, and I had to stop the film to explain the historical changes in the parties after the civil war. Then at the end of the film, I was asked, "Abraham Lincoln was assassinated?" The movie provides a great history of the most important historical event in American history since the founding of the nation. As a US citizen, I had no idea of the difficulty the Mr. Lincoln had in getting the 13th amendment passed. Daniel Day Lewis does a marvelous job in portraying Abe. The arguments for pro and contra passage of the amendment before/after the war or abandonment of the idea get a bit difficult to follow, but all in all the movie is a masterpiece, and leaves one with a greater appreciation of one of our greatest presidents.

Enjoyable movie with a slight flaw in the plot line
20 March 2019
Enjoyable movie, which does a good job of portraying Icelandic culture and gives a direct role to Icelandic folk music. An interesting plot turn that may be guessable to a reader of classic literature. My wife, who is very good at finding flaws in anything and everything, pointed out a flaw in the plot line, which I will leave as a puzzle to viewers.

Not a film for TRUMPets
20 June 2018
I'm afraid this is a film that is a political litmus test for the American population. If you are a red-blooded American who would give a 10 rating to "Independence Day" or "Top Gun" this is not your film. You should skip seeing it, and not bother to make a wishy washy argument with phrases such as "it doesn't come together", etc. of why you don't like it, when in reality ypu dislike the perhaps the underlying idea that America is slipping back into a suburbicom with the present political administration, and that does jive with political persuation.

For everyone else I suggest that you watch this well thought out Coen Brothers film that didn't dissappoint me one iota. There are a number of twists and a good dose of irony. Having grown up in the 1950s, I found the cinematography, costumes, hairdos, excellent. The acting was excellent, especially that of Julian Moore, the child actors and Karimah Westbrook's portrayal of a young black mother standing up to a racist mob. The movie is a dark thriller and I think it has the potential of becoming a cult classic.

Excellent movie that takes you there.
10 April 2018
The best police murder drama that I have seen in sometime. Excellent acting by both Fares Fares and the witness to the crime, Mari Malek. We are led into Mubarek's Egypt, a world where corruption is the norm and no one, even Noredin Mostafa, the police detective investigating the murder, is immune.

The film contrasts the lives of the rich and poor in Cairo, with the corruption reaching the highest levels and where respect for human rights is non-existent. The story is not so much about solving the mystery, but more about whether justice is possible in such a setting. In the background is the mounting tension of the political changes. The plot takes a new direction when the revolution and political upheaval impinge on the drama and suddenly the pace of the movie becomes frantic. I particularly enjoyed the ironic ending, which may be something of a political commentary.

It is unfortunate that the movie cannot be seen in Egypt at this time, but hopefully sometime in the future, Egyptians will be able to enjoy it!

Classic western movie pertinent to present times
1 December 2017
This is my favorite western. I have seen it a number of times and with the political landscape of the USA in 2017, I recommend it to everyone. Outstanding acting by all, and I especially enjoyed the part and acting of Anthony Quinn. In my opinion there is no movie that better exhibits the concept of a mob mentality and its possible consequences.

Reminiscent of the Fellini/Mastroianni era
30 May 2017
i saw the Spanish dubbed version of this film with my wife who is a Spanish Civil Servant. The Spanish Civil Service and government structure is similar to that of Italy, so the humor, much of which rests upon the way the system works, is easily understood in Spain. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and I heard my wife on at least a couple of occasions guessing the next bureaucratic maneuver that the recalcitant civil servant would use in his effort to maintain his position. The film effectively uses both Nordic and Latin stereotypes. It brought me back to the days of my youth, when movies such as "La Dolce Vita" or "Bread and Chocolate" made me laugh out loud, while providing me with an education on the difference between cultures.

Interesting mystery set in Galicia reflecting local fishing culture with a surprise ending.
16 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting mystery in which a series of clues point to two possible suspects. A previous, unsolved disappearance leads the principle investigator to the solution. Well acted, with attention to details in Galician culture, language, rain, and methods of fishing. Not a great movie, but very watchable and well acted.

Excellent - Deserves many Oscar nods
23 January 2014
There isn't much that I can add to the positive reviews that I've read here, except to say that in my opinion it is both Scorcese's and DiCapprio's best work. I saw the Spanish dubbed version of the film, and it was excellent, but I hope to see it in English at some point in the future. It would appear that some reviewers were turned off by the sex and drug scenes, obviously the movie is not to be enjoyed by all. As for my own personal bias, I believe the movie gives an entertaining depiction of how some portion of the 1% elect to spend their money, and, reading that the real life Mr. Bedfort only spent 22 months in prison, something of an indirect commentary of the failings of judicial systems to adequately punish fraud. Of course, the lesson applies to Spain and many other countries experiencing corruption as well as the US.

Overall, the performance was excellent and the three hours that I spent watching the movie was a great investment of my time.
