The Great Elephant Escape (1995)
George & Julian, r.i.p.
I just read that marvelous George Miller our director passed in Melbourne. Julian Sands tragically disappeared recently on Friday Jan. 13th on Mt. Baldy in CA. And Leo Burmester had a horrible death 6.28.07 from most probably the powassan virus. BUT -- once upon a time, back in late 1994, we, inc. Joey Gordon-Leavitt all had a marvelous time in magical Kenya working for Hallmark and Robert Halmi. Julian couldn't wait for the film to wind up so he could start his Kenya ascent (quickly followed by me and my family), Joey took it all very seriously with his young furrowed brow, and George was splendid, pulling us all together in warm, delightful, confident conviviality. The script was not going to shape the stories of African adventure, but we all jiggled and juggled and made round holes fit square pegs, and had a blessed ball in the process. God bless Leo, Julian, and George -- and Halmi Sr. Too, rest his soul, for giving us this rare gift.
The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)
A Masterpiece.
Had me "grippin' ma chair," what can I say. Stark, slicing, noir, and evil. Kudos to the entire chessboard, producers director, designers, players -- and of course the Bard who 413 years ago penned these monumental words -- but the vortex is Denzel Washington's "Titanic" performance, much like the great tipping dreadnought, wiping out the best as he relentlessly pitches to the depths.
Did I miss his "Tomorrow, and tomorrow..." soliloquy, or is it not here? ODD, to leave this out....
