Necessary Evil (2008)
pretty incomprehensible
But then again it was Lance Henriksen - and I would forgive him anything. Big smile :-D
It's about time the IMDb stopped with the minimum line length for reviews: it only encourages crap. Okay, this was a very B movie that I watched only because I absolutely love Lance Henriksen. Or is it Lance Hendrikson? Has that gained me another few characters? This is a very B Movie but that voice makes any movie he appears in worth watching, in my opinion. :-)
Have I got to 10 lines of text yet? Sheesh: watch this if you love Lance. Otherwise, don't bother.
Autumn (2009)
Actually, Iiked it (may be some spoilers)
I like the slow burn at the beginning. I liked that there didn't appear to be the almost instantaneous conversion to zombiedom with a bite. I liked that the zombies just aimlessly wander at first rather than becoming immediate attackers while the changes are still happening to them.
There wasn't a great deal of gore, which I prefer to be the case. I though Dexter Fletcher was really good and would have liked to see him cast in the the BBC remake of the Survivors.
Not keen on the non-ending.... it could have a sequel. What they did... what the other survivors did (the ones they left behind).
But stupidities: (from a personal pov) I'd have found many and decent guns (all those farmhouses) and I'd have experimented with blowing the heads off the zombies. Then tried a machete or a scythe if that didn't work. Or rounding them up with noise into cattle wagons (which are quite robustly built) then setting fire to them.
This film centred on the fact that the survivors were reluctant to kill the "undead" and made no plans to do so. Noble intentions, but silly. But, yet, different.
It could have been a series, for me. And did I mention Dexter Fletcher?
I would certainly watch another.
Mum & Dad (2008)
I agree with Willow1872-1
I, too, thought this was an oblique reference to Fred West and his perverted actions and those of his wife. I was glad to see that the wronged people won out in the end (many don't, these days).
It's quite creepy and well done: not much screaming (saves having to turn the volume down every ten seconds) and not a lot of gore. It's more psychological than than. A fair bit of unpleasantness, however.
Voting was difficult, so I settled for the middle. I felt it wasn't a turkey, but it wasn't brilliant and, being the person I am (can't help it) I'd have liked to see the police arrival and all that, so it fell a little bit short.
Also, I must have missed the meaning and role of the "first daughter". The Boy is clearly reluctant but she is enthusiastic to the point of joining in. Was she their natural daughter, or a victim of "Stockholm-type" syndrome?
Paranormal Activity (2007)
Sorry, not scary at all.
After all the hype of "not watching this one your own", and "You won't be able to sleep after watching this"....
What rot. It wasn't even that interesting.
Quite sorry I wasted my time. But other people may find it enthralling - some reviewers have already said as much.
I watched it on my own, and I think I'll sleep quite well, thanks.
It's a shame, really: a scary movie without gore is something to strive for. Pity that few achieve it. I honestly felt that this movie didn't go anywhere; didn't entertain; didn't scare even a bit. Like The Blair Witch, it was a bit of a non-event.
True Blood (2008)
Lots of fun
To Mordantmonkey: I *am* a Buffy/Angel fan and I absolutely love this series. Can't wait for the next one. Buffy and Angel (and Supernatural) are modern-day settings for old monster stories. True Blood is a modern-day setting in a backwood town,so much backwood that it doesn't feel modern at all. I love the accents: particularly "Old South" Bill with his wonderful manners, and Rene and his utterly convincing cajun accent. I love it as much as I loved Carnivale. And as much as I loved Buffy and Angel.
And it's eerily close to the concept of "Twilight": the good vampire and the virginal girl. With added sex.
Anyone have any suggestions where I should look next for a good series?
A Scanner Darkly (2006)
Truly dire (sorry)
A bit late to the gate, I guess - but I've only just seen this. I love sci-fi and I love movies, but this was utter, unadulterated rubbish.
It was minimally entertaining; looking for and identifying the faces and voices behind the animation was the only thing that was worthwhile, but apart from that.... I can't believe that 1) anyone seriously watched this, and
2) that it has been released in any form.
Sorry to all the people who liked it, but 0 out of anything
Much better to read the book if this is all cinema has to offer in the way of transforming book into film.
Carnivàle (2003)
utterly amazing! (tiny spoiler, but it's been said before)
Since I hate adverts, I like to buy box sets; I can't remember how I found my way to a reference to Carnivale but, after reading comments, I took a chance and ordered both seasons. And now I've finished watching them I'm overwhelmed. This story will play on my heart and mind for some time, I think, and I'll be watching it again in a couple of months. Everything about it was superb: the casting, the acting, the photography, sets, scripts... everything. A couple of episodes were slow but taking the series as a whole, it was just compelling. Obviously, I've watched it some time after it was aired (it's now April 2008) but it doesn't surprise me that fans were heartbroken and outraged that it ended after only two seasons. Like many others, I would love to see a movie, miniseries or book to give the story a definite end, but....
....nevertheless, even though someone seeing it for the first time will be dreadfully disappointed when it ends, I would highly recommend it. And I'm so glad I saw it on DVD instead of having to wait a week between episodes that are riddled with advertisements :-)
Puritan (2005)
I didn't like it either
Most commentators seem to like this, but I didn't. It seemed to me to be 90% of nothing happening and 10% denouement. The photography was laboured and unnecessarily monochromatic (mostly red/black). I guessed the identity of the disfigured man fairly early on and I think that most people will manage that. I love supernatural films but this was a real disappointment. I thought that there was no suspense and no character development. Also, I did not 'get' the ending. In fact, I couldn't engage with any of the characters at all. I've had to pad this out because of the rules but my summary would be: Quite boring with no resolution (yep - I'm one of those who likes a real ending! :-)
