Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Very entertaining but a little confusing.
Like most of Robert Rodriguez films the explosive and over the top blood makes his movies extremely fun. This is no exception, the phenomenal directing and story telling is complemented by amazing acting. The comic book style movie is absolutely amazing. Unfortunately the sequel doesn't offer any story connection to the first film, either you have to read the comics or look online for the story connection. The film all by its self is great but if your looking for a complete story line look some where else. Visually compelling and a quotable script makes for an extremely enjoyable movie. My advice is not to think about the first film, just enjoy the movie.
The Lords of Salem (2012)
Complete Crap
Rob Zombie has done it again with his regurgitation of films he watched when he was younger. The movie all together is terrible, Rob Zombie had an idea but it's apparent in the film he didn't know how to execute it properly, it ended up being a forced boring mash up of old horror films(mainly Kubrick). As a director and writer Zombie has the potential to do some really inventive and stunning things but some where it gets lost. The music is horribly timed and is completely misplaced in a film like this. Sheri Moon Zombie has no business being in the lead of this film, first off her acting is cringe worthy at best. Second the movie plays as if she should be younger not pushing fifty (which is apparent). Believe me you definitely pass this one in exchange for people who know how to execute a full length film. Rob Zombie seems to know only music and their video's and that's something he should stick to.
Trick 'r Treat (2007)
An Amazing Halloween Movie
Michael Dougherty creates a truly fantastic Halloween anthology film featuring four connected stories. An average high school principal with a dark secrete, a shy virgin who just met the "one", a group of teens who target a lonely outcast, and a woman who wont follow Halloween tradition. Dougherty writes and directs his first full length film that holds your nerves with witty plots and an amazing screen play that captures the essence of every character. The film takes place at night but the lighting and shots make it seem like the stuff you'll see on your typical Halloween night. The movie is out of order but the end will complete the whole movie so your left with an experience of a great horror movie.
Scream (1996)
A Salute to the Slasher Film
Wes Craven the directer of A Nightmare on Elm Street and My Soul to Take brings us the ultimate horror movie to pay homage to the one of the best genres of horror. Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is still trying to recover from her mothers death after a year on the exact day two teens are brutally murdered. Sydney thinks the murders are related but with more teens being killed will she find out the truth or will she be the next victim. Yet another amazing film from one of the masters of horror, Wes Craven brings us a unique slasher film filled with psychological horror and exciting terror. If you love the slasher genre or want just want a really great horror film you don't want to miss this one.
Halloween (1978)
The One that Started it All
Six year old Michael Myers is sent to a mental institute after committing an unspeakable act. 15 years later he returns to his home. The very first slasher clichés came from this epic horror film. Director John Carpenter is a household name for horror and an inspiration for many directors. With nearly every slasher movie looking up to this one, its easy to see why its a staple in slasher film genre. The brilliant directing and relatable characters make the scares in this film all the more better. After seven sequels and two remakes this one is definitely the best by far for its inventive shots, cuts and edits, highly recommended for any occasion.
Saw (2004)
One you shouldn't miss
James Wan the director of Insidious and The Conjuring brings us this psychologically nerve wrecking film. Two men wake up to find they have been chosen to play an insane game of the serial killer Jigsaw. Amazing performances by an all around fantastic cast, this one will leave you with your jaw on the floor. After eight sequels this one is still the best, the most inventive and the only one worth watching again and again. The mix of visionary director James Wan and brilliant script writing of Leigh Whannell make this an instant classic that will forever live in your deepest fears. Those of you who haven't experienced this instant classic are in for one hell of a ride.
Machete Kills (2013)
Could Be Better.
The great director Robert Rodriguez brings us the sequel to Machete. The President (Charlie Sheen) recruits Machete (Danny Trejo) into taking out an arms dealer (Mel Gibson) who wants to destroy the world. Now with great films under his belt like the Mexico Trilogy, Sin City and From Dusk till Dawn you would think this one would join that list. Sadly this film barely makes the watchable list. With an awkward first time performance by Lady Gaga and questionable amounts of CGI the legendary director seemed to get lazy in this sequel. The rest of the cast delivers fantastic performances for memorable characters, but with over the top violence, blood and barley dressed females this one is definitely for the guys.
The Family (2013)
Not Bad
From Luc Besson the director of The Fifth Element comes yet another film of Robert DeNiro playing a mafioso/gangster. This one however is a little different. Robert Stansfield (Tommy Lee Jones) places "The Family" Father Fred/Giovanni (Robert DeNiro)wife Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer) their daughter Belle (Dianna Agron) and son Warren (John D'Leo) into the witness protection program. After relocating to Normandy the family has some trouble leaving the mafia life style behind. This film is fun for the whole family, given your family are the appropriate age to watch an R rated film. The family is definitely relatable in some aspects but together the family might be someone living next door. The cast holds up strong to multiple award winning juggernauts Robert DeNiro and Tommy Lee Jones. Not an award winning film but it's still pretty fun and exciting to watch.
